The world Ends with You

Postby ilikegir33 » Thu Apr 17, 2008 4:47 pm

This sounds awesome right? Anything with SquEnix and Jupiter together is. TWEWY is about a boy named Neku Sakaraba who wakes up in what seems to be Shibuya. He figures out he can read minds when suddenly, there is a mysterious text message on his cell phone that says: "Reach 104, you have sixty minutes. Fail, and you will die. -Reapers". This is a certain game called "The Reapers' Game" that Neku has to play. It lasts a week, and if Neku leaves Shibuya or quits the game, all the players will be stricken from existence. There are more people playing this game, so Neku has to search out for them during a week in Shibuya.

This game is awesome, and I will definitely get it. SquEnix is finally back to an original concept, not another FF, Kingdom Hearts, or Dragon Warrior.

Oh yeah, it's for the DS.

Sounds like a Death Note knockoff, not an 'original concept.'

<.< Dude, that concept has almost nothing in common with Death Note. That's like saying that Gears of War is a Medal of Honor knock-off because they're both about war.

Anyway, I think this game looks awesome. I love the style and whole downtown Japan vibe of the game. Kinda reminds me of Jet Grind Radio, actually. I'll probably pick it up come the 22nd.

It reminds me of Death Note in the areas of....

TWEWY is about a boy named Neku Sakaraba who wakes up in what seems to be Shibuya.

I'll give you that one, the main character isn't a Light Yagami clone for the yaoi fangirls to eat up. No, in this case, it's a Sora clone.

He figures out he can read minds

If you look to your left, we have your plotline equivalent of the Death Note notebook.

"Reach 104, you have sixty minutes. Fail, and you will die. -Reapers".

There's DN's '13 day rule' from the notebook.

This is a certain game called "The Reapers' Game" that Neku has to play.

Here's the whole 'L and police vs. Kira' thing.

It lasts a week, and if Neku leaves Shibuya or quits the game, all the players will be stricken from existence.

More asinine rules similar to those in the 'notebook.'

Reapers

LOLSHINIGAMI

Oh, also note the cast full of emo/punk rock-style characters. Totally not appealing to the Death Note crowd.

So I'll take back what I said. It's not like Death Note. It's like Death Note written by the Kingdom Hearts guy. I'm surprised there's no Mickey Mouse in this one >__>

Cowboy Bebop is about some dude named Spike Spiegel.

Death Note is about some kid named Light Yagami.

Spike figures he can bag criminals for fast cash.

Light figures he can kill criminals for godhood.

Spike needs to bring them in alive though, or no deal.

Light need to know their names though, or no deal.

Spike has to face the Syndicate and Vicious.

Light has to face the Japanese police department and L.

Lots of assassins, lots of shinigami.

In conclusion, Death Note is a rip off of Cowboy Bebop.

You're willing to go to all ends, including lying or saying that everything that's related to death is a knockoff of Death Note, aren't you?

May as well break down my arguement. Oh, and I HAVE seen Death Note.

1. Good job, you just killed part of your arguement. Oh, and spikey orange hair is all he has in common with Sora to my knowledge.

2. No we don't.

We totally don't.

How does reading minds equal writing down names and killing people?

3. And that's a completely different situation. On top of that, it's nothing like L and the cops vs. Kira.

4. So rules in a twisted game are uncommon and automatically rip off Death Note?

Pretty much everything has rules. And most of the rules writen in the Death Note were guidelines, if I recall correctly

5. If you honestly think that reapers and Shinigamis started off with Death Note.... Then wow.

6. Yeah. They're teenagers. Lotsa teens are like that.

Fish and Chips: That Cowboy Bebop/Death Note comparison has to be the most awesome thing I've seen all day XD

Anyways, I can't wait until The World Ends With You comes out. It looks like so much fun. I'll probably get it after I drag myself away from Baroque and get a few games I've been meaning to.

I don't believe I've lied about a thing. And beyond that, you act like I make sport of making fun of Death Note.

1. Good job, you just killed part of your arguement. Oh, and spikey orange hair is all he has in common with Sora to my knowledge.

Except for the part where he looks exactly like Sora.

2. No we don't.

It's a plot vehicle similar to the notebook.

3. And that's a completely different situation. On top of that, it's nothing like L and the cops vs. Kira.

So what part of it is different? A battle of minds and wills is totally not the same as L/Police vs. Kira.

Not completely, but can you really say for sure that the recent success of DN hasn't influenced this in the least bit?

Pretty much everything has rules. And most of the rules writen in the Death Note were guidelines, if I recall correctly

Lol, and you said you watched Death Note.

5. If you honestly think that reapers and Shinigamis started off with Death Note.... Then wow.

I don't recall saying that. Once again, however, you don't think that the recent success of Death Note hasn't influenced that in the least bit?

6. Yeah. They're teenagers. Lotsa teens are like that.

So that makes it original?

Because Sora was the first adolescent hero character with messy, spiky brown hair. Also, it's the same character designer IIRC, so . . . of course there are going to be similarities. They're both examples of a staple character.

It's a plot vehicle similar to the notebook.

I'm with Fish here. Plots always have plot vehicles. Reading minds is radically different than being able to kill with a notebook.

So what part of it is different? A battle of minds and wills is totally not the same as L/Police vs. Kira.

Aren't most battles largely of minds and wills? Sure, you've got physical combat, but you've got to out-think and out-guts (for lack of a better term) your opponent to win . . .

Not completely, but can you really say for sure that the recent success of DN hasn't influenced this in the least bit?

What are you arguing? Ripoff or somewhat influenced by Death Note? Make a choice.

So that makes it original?

I don't know, aren't they appealing to a similar teenage audience? A lot of rock music has similar themes. Who's the ripoff there?

Sheesh, there are many differences between this game and Death Note. The plots are completely different. In one corner, you have a semi-realistic psychological chess match/crime drama with a supernatural twist. In the other corner, you have a cartoony action story taking place in the midst of some mysterious game. I'm not following your "ripoff' accusation here.
And so what if it's influenced by Death Note in some way? Death Note was an excellent series. Anyone with functional observation skills can see the differences between this game and Death Note. As for me, I'm going to think seriously about buying this game. It's got the Kingdom Hearts team, which makes me happy, plus it has sort of an offbeat, dark aesthetic that pushes all of the right buttons for me. Plus, it has buying stylish clothing as a game mechanic. That sounds like all sorts of fun, especially if your character's appearance changes.

.....you do realize that shinigami is a concept that isn't confined to manga and anime, don't you? I hope you do. It's like accusing Harry Potter for being a rip-off of Lord of the Rings because they both have wizards.

But rip-off or not....I really want to play it. 8)

THis sounds interesting if I had a DS. I do like the charachter design for this, sort of Jet Grind Radio meets Kingdom hearts.

And wouldn't death games sort of completely bypass Gantz and death note and derive more directly from ohh... maybe Battle Royale?

And Lord knows, virtually every traditional JRPG in recent history has extremely similar plotlines and characters, but does that mean that they're all just ripoffs of each other? ...... well, maybe, but that's not the point. XP
...I agree with everyone's points about why TWEwY is not a knockoff. I won't attempt to drag out the argument any further.

I do hope this game is successful, though, because it's so nice to see Square dig into a new franchise, and if this game hits it off, maybe they'll try something new on the Wii, too. At this point (huh, kinda like the gamecube) the Wii is sorely in need of some good RPG love.

Truth is, TWEwY was so successful in Japan it even spawned off a manga in, of course, Shonen Gangan. Anything that Famitsu gives a 35/40 is good in my book. And I'll definitely be first in line to get this game.

Yeesh. So much dissent going on in here. It's downright unfriendly. Perhaps the following statement has absolutely nothing to do with this thread, but let me try it:

Will this game be any good?
That's what I wanna know.

I dunno, maybe my post doesn't belong here for lack of a certain critical edge.

I'm not particularly familiar with either game, but they received generally favorable average ratios on GameRankings.
That said, I wouldn't completely trust Famitsu's ratings, as they can be skewed.

The World Ends with You appears to be getting really good initial reviews.

Boktai is the game where you had to go out in sunlight to play it, which meant you couldn't see the Game Boy screen, and if it was raining or nighttime you couldn't play it very well.

I would've said Vagrant Story (which got a perfect 40 from Famitsu) but apparently I'm the only person in the entire world that thinks that game sucks hard.

EDIT: Not saying that this game is bad. Just that I take issue with the "If Famitsu gives it over a 35 it has to be good!" Especially since Famitsu seems to be made of Square-Enix super fanboys.

Interesting. Judging by the IGN review, the game seems really out there, and really appeals to me visually, but geez, it comes across as a bit daunting too. I've always liked games that give you a lot of choice and freedom, but with that comes the fear of botching up bigtime.
