The "Tales Of" Series

Postby Tommy » Tue Aug 15, 2006 6:36 pm

From what I believe this series is made by tri-Ace (the guys behind Valyrkie Profile, Radiata Stories, and Star Ocean) and published by Namco.

I've been nagging Monkey J. Luffy to pick up "Tales of Symphonia" because I wanted to try it (he has GC, I don't). He finally got it, and I started a file and I have to say this game is one sick ride. I love the battle system and the characters and the plot is great (yet somewhat offensive).

Also, as a bonus, Monkey J. Luffy allowed me to borrow "Tales of Phantasia" for the GBA. ToP is a good game, but I feel like I'm playing Star Ocean 2 all over again. The main characters even look the same. Well, I like the time travel stuff, reminds me of Chrono trigger. ;)

I was considering purchasing "Tales of Legendia" for the PS2 once I save enough money (it's still 50$ over here). I heard the battle system of Legendia has worse graphics that ToS and the battle system is set up like the old Tales games meet the new. I got enough games going on now, but I may get to it.

How are the other Tales games I left out (assumes there are a ton)?

I only played ToS and it was great but the Cursing was a little overboard but the Battle system was great

(Aside from the cursing, I enjoyed ToS completely. I didn't find the plot all that offensive, but maybe that's because I played it the year after I studied mythology in school. ~_^)

(I also played a bit of Tales of Phantasia (for the GBA) when Mega was borrowing it from his friend - another fun game (though the characters in the battle system weren't as responsive as I would have liked - made the game very hard at the beginning), and slightly less "offensive" than ToS, I suppose. Still had the summon spirits as in ToS (though, to my dissapointment, with less personality), but other than that it was okay.)

I like how you parenthesise things in parenthesis. After that message, you are now refered to ask Bracket Girl. =D

Seriously, the language in ToS was nothing over the bar compared to most RPGs. I can assure most of the Final Fantasy games have worse language.

I'm not offended at all by the plot but I assume most Christians would be. I think its just a video game, but fun one.

(Ne, well, I suppose the language could be considered over the top for certain age groups - or certain families. Such as mine. But anyways, thanks for the notice on the FF games - I know now not to play them in the next few years. O_o)

(And I still don't think the plot was all *that* offensive, it's nothing worse than our Christian curriculum mythology "course" for twelve-year-olds.)

(edit: Actually, I'm the (parentheses) girl, rather than the Brackets girl.)

Tales of Eternia was fun as most Tales games are. But the cliche plot and bland villains really brought it down.

I'm looking forward to playing Tales of the Abyss...

I can assure most of the Final Fantasy games have worse language.

Actually, I don't remember that much language in FF games in recent years. At least, in FF X and X-2.

BUT THAT IS SPAM!!!

Master Dias, i am aware recent FF games are toned down in language but let us compare FF8 and ToS.

FF8 is far worse, yet I find FF8 to be a highly superior game.

Worried about cursing? The translated ROM of the original Tales of Phantasia had them use the F-bomb (in the correct context, interestingly enough o_O ).

Yeah.
But that was the translators messing around...and taking great liberties with the original script...
It feels out of place in the game.

That's actually kinda funny. While playing through the game myself, I just pictured F bombs and am ready to laugh my head off.

Anyways, no one has informed me of their favorite "Tales" game.

Oh yeah, one thing. This isn't exactly accurate.

Basically, several of the founders of tri-Ace were orginally the key staff members of the Telenet development studio Wolf Team where they developed Tales of Phantasia in the early 90s. However, a severe internal dispute in Wolf Team caused these key members(and a number of employees) to leave and form tri-Ace where they would soon after develop Star Ocean.
This is why the "Tales of" and Star Ocean series have a number of similarities...

Meanwhile, many of the people who remained at Telenet/Wolf Team would continue developing Tales games throughout the 90s until Namco Tales Studio was created recently.

I knew about Wolf Team. I was convinced tri-Ace was a division of Wolf Team and became the only members of it and became independant.

Overall Star Ocean is superior, but I prefer ToS over So2.
