laptop good? and ram question

Good laptop or no? Thinking of buying it.

Also my ram question is this... I have two 512s right now (dual channel) I was thinking of picking up two 1gb dual channel but I am not sure if the two would jive with each other. Any idea if they would?

Depends on what you want to use the laptop for. General use-wise, it looks okay.

As for the ram, you're looking at replacing 512MB sticks with 1GB sticks? Just make sure your motherboard supports the size and speed you're looking at and it should be fine.

No I have 4 slots 2 open I was going to put 2 1gb dual channel sticks in the two open spots (well switch them so the 512's are on the furthest side) I just woundered if the two different dual channels would jive with each other.

Unless you can find the exact model for adding new RAM you need all new sticks, if you just drop some new ones in they likely wouldnt be fully utilized (not using the full amount per stick), and general compatability problems, possibly a lot of memory dumps (which force restart the system).

For the laptop it seems fine as is but if you're spending that much anyway you should pick up an OEM version of XP Pro for another $140.

Actually, you ought to be able to add it, provided you keep the pairing. I believe the paired slots ought to be either grouped physically or color coded or something like that.

You just have to make sure that within a pair, each partner is identical.

Outside of the pairing, however, I do strongly recommend keeping uniform speed and timings, otherwise you might run into occasional weirdness.

That sounds like it should work fine. Be sure your MB supports up to 1GB sticks, though. Also, be sure you keep the two sets together (1gb, 1gb, 512mb, 512mb) rather than apart (1gb, 512mb, 1gb, 512mb - for example). Depending on the kind of RAM, it can keep the system from working right.
