Postby Wise Dragon » Tue May 17, 2005 7:36 am

OK Ive got a problem with my PS2. Sometimes it wont read some of my games and sometimes it will. Its the same with CD's and DVD's also. Im not using any imports or burned games it just wont read the disk. Got any suggestions? Im on the verge of just having to take it to a repair shop.

That happens to me quite a bit. It gets really annoying, I know, but I found a few things that help.

First start up the PS2 and go into the browser.
Next clean the disc you want to play, just a few soft brushes with a tissue or something.
Put in the disc and wait for either the image of a cd to appear or the dreaded "Disc Read Error"
If you get an error, unplug the memory cards and controllers (I know how weird that sounds but I really believe it helps) Eject the cd then put it back in. This is faster than restarting and it keeps you in the browser.
If you still get an error you can try again, unless you're lazy, in which case just give up.
I will not waver, doubt or falter for all truth in this world has been written into the book here at my side.

get some canned air. blow the insides of the ps2(especially near the disc reader). if you still get read errors try having your ps2 stand on its side.

Are you getting the error: "Disk read error"?
My brother had that, he got it to work after finding an online answer, I'll ask him about
it, and get back to you.

BTW, it involved opening the PS2 up and fiddling with it, so if you aren't comfortable doing that, it won't work.

to fix the problem that you are having you should use a CD leans cleaner. It is a CD that gose in and the little brushes that are on it will clean the leans for you. I have this problem from time to time.

Hopefully the above fixes will help and you don't have a laser misalignment. That may be what zip is talking about.

If so, it's a bit of a pain.

I have tried using the cleaning kits and they helped and Ive found it tends to do a lot better when It is put on its side though. That has cleared up some of the problem so its not as bad but It still drives me crazy. It probably is the eyepiece going out of sync. I seem to remember X Play mentioning something on that a few years ago but Im not sure.

No, that's not the greatest idea. I've read toturials that actually said that kind of stuff can actually cause the lens to crack b/c it's really cold.

I actually may have the same problem, sometimes my PS2 will give me a a message to insert the game disc when I'm playing PSone games. I've cleaned it, and now it only happens 1/2 the time... it can be quite annoying.

an air duster only shoots out the cold propellant if you aim it upside down.

What version numbers are on your PS2s by the way, they may simply be getting old and part of the laser assembly is shorting out.

well

i started having the dreaded DISK READ ERRORS today! bum bum bum

this is the true story... of a young boy.... who fixed his ps2

man it took forever! good thing i found an online tutorial
http://arstechnica.com/articles/paedia/hardware/ps2.ars/1

i had a LOT of trouble though, and its all pretty funny cause im such a idiot lol

1. my first problem was getting the bottom off... like the url i posted, my ps2 was a different model, anyway... after removing the screws from the bottom, i attempted to remove it... but it was firmly stuck... so i tried to pry it, no avail, did a LOT of things... then i gave up and took the thing off with full strength... it snapped, but nothing too bad (like the screw area snapped) and it turns out... i forgot to unscrew a screw... so bleh

2. after dabbing rubbing alcohol on the lense, i decided to blow on it to dry.... turns out i ended up fogging the lens.... so instantly, i started inhaling AT the lens... and i unfogged it lol

turns out... it wasn't a dirty lens problem, but a lense angle misalignment, so i correctly aligned it... and voila! it works now!

whole operation took about 3 hours

*bow* yes i am elite

I saw that someone on the 1st page mentioned turning the ps2 back into sony, and I thought I'd chime in and note that they don't do that for any systems you bought more than 3 1/2 years ago (or sometime around 3 years I believe...)
My ps2 did that too and after taking it apart and wiping it down and reattaching wires so many times, we just gave up and got a new ps2 slim. Personally I like the older one, even though its amazingly small. If I ever wanted to get a harddrive for my ps2 (unlikely) it wouldn't support it.

listen up everybody... chances that you are getting disk read errors is likely because of the laser misalignment like oldphil said

that is a GREAT tutorial, and it helped me out a LOT

You can't even serf the internet with your PS2... At least the Dreamcast could...
Besides, the Hard Drive can do only 3 things.
-Save games
-install certain games so they run faster (resident evil outbreak)
-... ... and that's it.

Final Fantasy 11 is coming to xbox360, it's already out on PC, there's no reason to buy it for console.

The ps2 sucks, becuase sony is incompetant at building consoles, I OWNed 3 ps2s, ALL 3 OF THEM have defects and problems after 1year.

You can also download some larger files like SOCOM 2 maps. And why would you want to serf the internet on a console? Surfing the internet on Sega Net was a good way to go blind on a TV smaller than a 20 inch. If you want to type stuff in Word, surf the web, and use complicated programs obviously a desktop is suitable.

You bought 3 PS2's...? You could of just called Sony and they would of fixed it for free. It worked three years ago with mine and I got mine on launch day so it was well out of warranty. It stopped reading the blue CD based discs and regular CD's sometime ago but I don't care. The only blue disc games I own are Virtua Fighter 4 and Timesplitters.

And you cannot repair the first generation ones, IE mine, with this guide. Already tried it the gear always reset no matter what you do. So if you own one of the 3001, or something, serial numbered versions don't bother you're stuck with it.

I Had 1 PS2, which broke, and was fixed, but broke again, and was fixed again, then broke again and I said screw it, I sold it to Gamestop for $65.

I bought a NEW one. For me and my little brother, but it started getting problems like controller input for Player 2 wouldn't read, the open close slot had bad firmware issues, and it keeps getting stuck and having to catch up whenever playing CDs, DVDs, Games etc...

I moved out and Left that PS2 with my little bro, I got one for me, (because i'm living in Florida now) and later I switched mine with his, So he can have the newer one that works better and I can take the messed up one (brotherly love, yes)

NOW his is messing up. As well as mine.. Messing up even more.

I have OWNED a total of 3 PS2s, all 3 of which are garbage. Sony sucks. no no, here, let me say it again, Sony -> -> -> sucks.

They are turning into a giant Corporation like Microsoft, and when corps get bigger and richer, they begin not carring about Quality: Examples: Walmart, Microsoft, EA games.

...if it was in warranty... wouldnt they.... replace it?

to the original question:
are the discs blue or purple on the bottom?
This will occur on cheap or older disks. All ya gotta do it weight em' with two pieces of tape folded over each other to weight the disc, DVDs are heavier than blue bottomed one.
