I need a manga suggestion for a LONG car trip

Postby Mangafanatic » Mon Jul 12, 2004 12:32 pm

Has anybody read any good manga lately? I really need some for a 16 hour car trip. (BLEH!) This is a family trip so I need something that's young eyes (or my eyes for that matter) would not be scandalized by. I've read Furuba(1-3), DNAngel(1-2), and Azumanga Daioh to name just a few. I like the Shoujo-- romantic comedy genre, so I'd love to hear all suggestions. Thanks.
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.

Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.

But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. For more information concerning how you can help and how you can get an incredible video about this horrific reality, visit the Invisible Children home page.

Lets see.. Some suggestions, well you might have already read most of these, I'll put the ratings next to them for ya. >_.

Saint Tail (so sweet ;-; ) All Ages

Tokyo Mew Mew (ok) Youth 7+

Angelic Layer (yah.. v_V; ) Youth 7+

Mink (by Megumi Tachikawa who wrote Saint Tail) Youth 7+

Tsubasa (I liked this one. o.o; ) Teen 13+

The Candidate for Goddess (havent read this personally, but heard it was good) Teen

Cardcaptor Sakura All Ages

Corrector Yui All Ages

Magic Knight Rayearth Youth 10 +

Miracle Girls All Ages

I haven't read all of those. I've heard they're pretty good though. There are some other good books, like Juvenlie Orion but its 16+ >_. I didn't know that till I looked. v_V;;

Galaxy Angels is good too, I forgot the rating though. >_. Another good series is Juline. It has fighting. But I'm sure its rated Youth. It's kinda old though, so it might be tough to get. Well.. I hope I helped some. v_V; Bye for now.

Those are great suggestions. I really like them all. Unfortuneately I've already read and own them too. But thanks for the time you invested in your reply, Yeito.

Eesh...Aria is a pretty good one, albeit it a little slow. But the art is very pretty. I would suggest Faerie's Landing, but it's starting to hint at some shonen ai, so I'm not sure I'd want to recommend that to anyone. The only other manga I myself have are the cowboy bebop and gundam wing series mangas--and those aren't really in your genre. Still, if you'd want to know what they're about or what they may contain, PM me. Too bad FMS isn't licensed yet, eh?

Ditto's on the "I wish Full Moon was licensed" sentiment. I almost bought a japanese first volume and a translation sheet but ti was over priced and it wouldn't get here in time. So, zero on that score.

i read this really great manga today. it was short, but it was very very good. it's called shirahime-syo. if ya like the shoujo thing, i'd recommend kare kano. i've seen the anime, but i haven't read the manga, so make sure to check the rating before you buy. ummm, i really liked trigun maxium. i've read the first 2 volumes of wish, and those are pretty good, but very messed up in its theology. one piece is good, bleach is suppose to be good, just bought it today, haven't had a chance to read it yet. ummm... magic knight rayearth was recommended to me by my cousin, i haven't read it yet tho... anyways, hope that helped!

I would recommend Kare Kano (Kareshi Kanojo no Jiou). I have read volumes 1 & 2 so far and I want to read volume 3. It's a cool series-it's about a girl who puts up a perfect front and gets jealous when a new guy seems to be as perfect as she seems, only his isn't a front. He finds out that sh's only pretending and blackmails her for awhile. It's a really funny series. Sometimes it said the 'd' word I think but I don't remember it being often or any other cuss words....check it out! I don't think that you'll regret it :)

Btw i know of eight volumes that are out right now of Kare Kano. I also hear that the Seikai Trilogy is pretty good-what I really want to see is the anime of that. Also, Girl Got Game is ok I guess, but sometimes there are perverted moments like one time in the second volume...I just kinda skipped over that part-I'd explain the reason for it can't but that would just confuse you I think. You can go to http://www.tokyopop.com and check out Kare Kano and Girl Got Game there to get more info on them.

Well, I personally really like a shojo called Mars. It's Teen, probably for language and some discussion of .... stuff, but not in the perverted sense. The art is beautiful and I go throught it like wildfire. I recommend it.

Careful about Kare Kano though--I know at least in the anime the two main characters sleep together. You might want to investigate.

Really? ....I've only read up to volume two so I didn't know that....eh, then I might want to stop reading it...that's sad. In like the 14 volume of Mars (or 13 or 15-I forgot) the main girl moves in w/ the main guy and they sleep together( I read the translations for volume 6 and up)-that made me sad/mad.....you do decide to marry but still....not good :(

Even about such a thing, please use spoiler tags, I beg of you....now my manga experience is ruined.

I didn't consider it that much of a spoiler, since it's not considered one in many review circles either when this show is talked about. But I do apologize then, AngelSakura.
ah yeah, the anime did a pretty good job not being descriptive in the sex scene, kinda like the wolfwood/millie scene in trigun. i heard the manga wasn't so discreet, so definatly look into that before you buy:)
this is kinda lame, but if you have a decent printer, you can DL unlicensed manga and print it out... put it in a binder or something.

Unliscened manga recommendation: Neon Genesis Evangelion: Girlfriend of Steel. (aka Iron Maiden.) Completely clean (so far, up to 2nd vol., 4th chap.), unlike the original NGE. decent story, good characters, pretty art (I liked it anyway). No fanservice-type crap. Check it out at http://www.adtrw.org/loveeva.php OR http://www.karmaburn.com/love_eva_downloads.html (second link if you don't have BitTorrent.)

Ashley, I think she was talking to me about Mars-I'm sorry AngelSakura I didn't think about using the spoiler tag; please forgive me. I was thinking that someone might want to stop/not want to start it if they learned of what was going to happen between the two of them later on-I wish someone had done that for me. However, you obviously think differently and I'm sorry. I'll try to use better discretion next time.
