i + 1 experiment: Fiz shinmaix huak no

Postby Bobtheduck » Mon Dec 03, 2012 5:59 pm

I'm gonna test the i + 1 theory. i + 1 is the idea that all language can be learned inductively, the key is

1. A lowered affective filter. Meaning, if you come into this stressed out or thinking "This is stupid", you won't learn a thing.
2. Understandable input. That means there are aspects of what you are learning that you already know (i), but you are introduced to one item of function you don't know (+1)

No one who has already learned a language has a 0 on a new language, because you can already figure some basic things out with context.

Connectionists say that you hear those things in different contexts, and eventually you learn how to connect them together in a good way. It's related to this idea.

Someone see if they can translate some of this. I'm using simple sentences that would be taught to a child. See if you can guess what I'm saying by context and cross-referencing. Even if you can't translate everything, can you tell me what any of it may say? I don't expect anyone to be able to translate all of it, but if you can figure any of it out, then please try!

There you go. There should be enough there to get past the 0 stage to the 1 stage. I also left hints about phrases past the first sentence for each example.

As best I can tell, "Fiz" would be "This" or "That". No idea what the "no" at the end of each first sentence is unless it's supposed to be that languages form of "to be", in which case the words in between would describe whatever are in the images/videos.
So the first sentence I would imagine would be something along the lines of "This is a girl. She is sad." the second "This is a boy. He is happy." "This is a cat. [no idea]. [no idea]." and so forth.

Good job! You got the first part (though there is a word you forgot in the girl picture. Sech JUT bat uinko, also uinko isn't a to be word, though you're close... I didn't offer any other uses of that word, however, so maybe that one would be too hard to figure out based on current context)

Any attempts at second sentences from other pictures?

For context to figure jut out, here are two more pictures:

Image

Ot fatpo no.

Image

Chiro JUT fatpo no. (or, alternatively, Chiro Fatpotu bech ot no.)

EDIT: For the cat, don't simply pay attention to words. See if you can find common morphemes. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/ ... =t&ld=1120 That's the definition of morpheme, BTW. They may give clues, in their interaction with the other morphemes, about their use.

Well here are my guesses.
"uinko" has something to do with feeling.
"Fiz" and "no" are articles like the,a, or an or it could be this.

"goru" is cat.
"chit" is wild bird.
"uanisa" is cockatiel.
"gisa" is eagle.
"pulzhul is cooked fish. "pul" is fish.
"lao('s)" is ball.
"lom('s)" is wheel.

"rel" is adjective for small.
"toto" is adjective for dumb.
"fatpo" is adjective for dangerous.
"pat" is happy. "jut bat" is sad or depressed.

"sor" is "it"
"sopar" is "is" from "to be" and only used to describe live animals.
"sech is "is" also from "to be" and only used to describe females. "set" is for males. "pin" is for objects.
Edit
I change my answer for "fatpo" to scary or dangerous for a second guess.

The bold blue ones are the ones you got right. The red ones are incorrect things you may want to pay attention to. Yellow or green (was green when I chose the color...) means you're on the right track.

oh wow I actually got some right! It was fun to try to figure these out. It was like a complicated logic puzzle. What does the text that was not colored or not in bold mean?
Can I have more guesses?

Non-colored = Not right
Red= Portion that's not right
Green = Right track
Blue = Right.

Yes, you may have more guesses. Technically, I shouldn't even be saying "right" or "wrong" from the innatist. From the connectivists perspective, I should simply provide the words and functions in other contexts.

Yeah. That makes sense. Is this test supposed to be like a controlled science experiment or something done for fun or leisure? Also I speak 2 languages so I have experience in learning a new language. This might have affected how I figured some things out. Although what is done with the verbs is completely new to me.
Edit
This language is definitely foreign and unrecognizable to me though.

I'm doing it for leisure. It's based on real theories, though, so if I really wanted to experiment on these theories, I should have followed the rules. From now on, I'll avoid using English when answering unless I absolutely have to.

As for verbs.
