Christian Pink Floyd

Anyone know of a band like this? I've heard a few Christian artists and bands that use a little texture, nice layering of instruments and effects, but mostly those are more along the lines of electronica/techno, and i really like the more lyrical/guitar solo based music some days.

I'm thinking some Michael Card sorta fits, but not all of it, though the majority of his work is very well written. Jars of Clay isn't too bad, but it's not exactly my cup of tea either. There's a few bands i can't name off the top of my head, but really nothing stands out, and i don't feel like wading through Myspace's trashheap to find a few good independent ones. (ran across a so called christian goth electronica artist who had a song up, the lyrics to which comprised of a single repetitious vulgarity i'll not repeat here.)

On that note, i've nearly finished my own solo project, i hope to have it out soon, perhaps i'll post a link to it where people can listen for free before i try to market it.

It occurs to me that Pink Floyd may not be the best indicator of style.

I like Pink Floyd, Genesis, Yes, Emerson Lake and Palmer, Porcupine Tree, Steven Wilson, David Bowie, Ed Alleyne Johnson, M83, Sigur Ros, This Mortal Coil, Dead Can Dance, Placebo, Shiny Toy Guns, Sisters of Mercy, Sweet Talk Radio, The Verve, Mazzy Star, Gnarls Barkley, Robin Trower, Depeche Mode, the list goes on and on...

So, any Christian artist/s or bands that sort of fall within this broad category?

Orphaned Land are very good. They're not Christian but they have a strong Jewish/Christian/Muslim influence. I'd class them more as old school metal with a Middle-Eastern flavour.

I'm diggin the middle eastern influences but not so much the metal. Thanks, though, there's one new band i did not know about and i may come back to it when i'm in a more metal mood.

Josh, you seem to be talking about art rock or progressive art rock, and frankly I know very few Christian artists in that category. I'd like there to be some also.

Try listening to The Choir. Their discography is so extensive that I’m really not sure what the best starting point is (I only have a couple of their albums). Their newer stuff is light rock with a nice ethereal sound; some of their really old stuff from the 80s has more of, well, an 80s feel.

Also definitely Eisley. Some of their songs might be a little bit lighter than the bands you listed. Other than that, I don’t know what to say about them except that they’re good.

Reels of White Softly Flow: Check this group out if you don’t mind instrumental rock. They’re ethereal, experimental, and highly obscure.

Thanks for the suggestions Kaori, i've checked out a little of each and like all three so far. Is Reels a live recording band? Their guitarist is a little rough here and there, like the take was done live and they couldn't go back and edit. I do like the sound though, makes me think of a shoegaze version of Yes! lol

The singer for Eisley reminds me of Leigh Nash, which is kinda cool.

The Choir seems like a diverse band, but with 26 tracks on myspace, i would hope so!

Definitely seems like there are no one trick ponies here. Thanks!

I'm gonna have to get on my Myspace accounts and add these guys.

[/QUOTE]The Choir is a band that has been around for nearly 30 years, I believe without ever breaking up and reforming--they've just stuck with it for a really long time. So yeah, their style has changed some during the decades(!) that they’ve been making music together.

My pleasure; I’m glad you liked them.

Eisley are awesome and so poetic. The three sisters are like Sirens from Greek mythology (only they don't kill their listeners). ;p
