She walked down the sidewalk, past the side of the road that led back to the hospital. As usual, she looked between the buildings to see if there was any significant amount of desolation she could marvel at. It was always nice to see people living, hiding from society because they were inadequate for whatever reason. And desolation in and of itself was nice too.
One alleyway, nothing but rats nibbling at fragments of refuse. Another, some sprawled out newspapers that no one had read. Another, Dr. Toris' daughter, lying dejectedly on the cold floor, struggling to keep warm with only a thin blanket. How nice, she thought, as she walked off to the hospital.
She backtracked. Oh, that's right. It was Dr. Toris' daughter. The one who had quite the determined look in her eyes at the conference maybe 7-8 years ago. She remembered thinking about how the little girl might become a brilliant surgeon if she worked at it. It was funny though. Here she was, in rags.
"Hello there, how do you do? Do you remember me? My name is Dr. De Lacey. I met your father at a conference a while ago, and you were there too. Wow. You've grown so much, I almost didn't recognize you."
That was a lie, since she knew who the girl was from the moment she saw her.

She smirked. The girl had grown up since she last saw her. "Oh really? I don't recall Dr. Toris as being that kind of man." She brushed her hair back, put her hand on her hip and shifted her weight to her other leg disinterestedly, showing that it made no difference to her. "If I were to look at your situation objectively, I would first presuppose that you were not cast out, but rather you ran away. At that point your motive would have to be determined, and based on the way your obviously fake praise of me centered on my business with unwinding, I would conclude that you are related to that practice. In other words, there is an almost certain possibility that you are an unwind." Her bored expression didn't change.
"If I was anyone else, or if you were anyone else, I would not hesitate to strip you in search of a tattoo and promptly alert the authorities. However, there is a nice warm cot in my hospital office that is infinitely more comfortable than a cold alleyway. I personally don't care to see you naked, just as you probably don't care to show me, so alike to Schrodinger's cat, among the infinite possibilities of what you are, as long as I do not observe, you are at once to me everything and nothing, including being an unwind." She extended her hand. "Fair enough?"
