Nah, Pen-Pen was in my opinion one of the lesser factors of the show. Maybe I just wasn't expecting a penguin in the anime that people get depressed thinking about though. Maybe I'll have to rewatch Eva again.

Anyway, usually I don't go much for the overly-cute anime animals (to use a video game example, whenever Chu-Chu the little fluffy pink mouse thing would come on screen in Xenogears, I would groan inwardly rather than dissolve into mush). But a few are just really hard to resist:

Kirara is so cute and the best pet because he will fight anyone that dares to hurt his owner!

I hated Pen-Pen, I felt he had absolutely nothing to do with the show and they added him just to have the "cute pet factor"... except he wasn't any cute. I'm usually bothered by gratuitous pets so my favourites are the ones s that are seamlessly incorporated into the show.
