Also, there are probably pro-flugelhorn people out there somewhere who would object to the meaning of the word being changed into something "profane"!

I just say ouch, I don't like cus words and it is not healthly to say them always when you get in pain.

I guess if you were alone and you smash your head in the wall, then you could let something out. Well okay, I'll admit I say crap from time to time.

But if you're at church, come on. Try to control yourself to a certain extent.

Huh... o__o That does make sense... I suppose that with it being a outlet for anger and pain, it allows us to handle it for longer. I wonder if any other kind of outlet, like hitting or punching, would be as effective?

I guess that would depend on weather you hurt your hand in the first place...

Hitting things can help as an outlet probably, presuming you don't hurt yourself (worse) in the process or break something valuable.

Not if you're sticking a fork in them, you don't.

That said, I think Cthulu would be not so far from profane.

Ok, time to come clean: While I detest excessive public swearing and violent outbursts, I must admit that I tend to swear HEAVILY and/or hit and break things when I get angry or hurt myself, which is quite a lot (I only do this in private though, I have the self control to not swear or lash out before others in public).

It didn't used to be this bad though. It's gotten worse as the years have passed on. I really wish I can cut back, but I guess I still have a lot of demons that need to be exorcised :-(

I guess once you allow something to bug you, it's hard to not let things bug you so easily 8( I'm working on that too ^__^ I'm getting better with it, but there are still moments where I do want to slam a door or start cussing xD;

That sucks for me cause I refuse to swear.

-This.

Any pain you can choose to stop in such a manner as noted by the article isn't really pain and 64 people is a pathetic population sample. By the way, cursing isn't allowed in the emergency room, I know from experience.

My father, who never curses in his day to day life, was doing so in a blue streak to try and get the attention of doctors after screaming in agony did nothing (they left him there for an hour as they walked around to and fro in whatever they felt like doing). Nurses actually approached and while they wouldn't treat him until they got more rooms in the back or do anything for his pain they were quite willing to tell him that if he continued that language they would throw him out of the hospital... imploded gaul-bladder and all.

From my own personal experience (and given that there were only 64 samples I think it does hold significance) man has no cures for pain of the extreme kind in his medical knowledge. But there is in my humble opinion a remedy for suffering which I prescribe to called mercy, to dwell upon the pain of others and to consider their pain before your own even as you are incapacitated. For in our deepest pain, only then may we share in small part in the cup that Christ so willingly underwent for our sins. Only through the experience do we truly gain the full potential for empathy towards others, and only in focusing on them did I find that pain lost some of it's edge.

I am not sure why I feel mercy and empathy are the best medicine for pain, but when taken in earnest, I have found it to be of better effect then Advil or other pain medications ever were.

Sounds like grounds for a lawsuit if you ask me. Can't hospitals get in serious trouble if they refuse to treat a patient?

In any case, this thread is getting too srs bzns.

@ Pascal-I agree completely. I don't like swearing. Althought it is human's nature to swear, we are not meant for this world and should not follow whatever is popular such as swearing. It ruins ones testimony and makes your lips more loose. I remember reading in the book of James that one should not have loose lips, but should control them.

Now come on people, we are not babies sending out a temper tantrum.

Agreed. XD Just to let people know, it's not the words themselves that are inherently bad, but that swear words are associated as being taboos or mores in society. As such, they have strong negative connotations.

So if "flabberdune" was a swear words to us, then it would help "alleviate pain" or whatever. At the very least have the same effect as saying any other swear word. Words are only bad because we define and give associations to them.

So.... basically we are to blame! XD

On a personal level, I'm not sure I can say how "bad" swearing is. I have certainly done it more than I would like to admit, but is it a sin? I have no idea, so I looked in the bible.

Matthew 12:36 says:
"But I tell you that men will have to give account on the day of judgment for every careless word they have spoken."

And James 1:26 says:
"If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless."

There's also a multitude of other verses I found about controlling your tongue, watching your words, etc. Of course, that means nothing if you don't consider swear words to be inherently evil.

I was curious so I dug deeper and found this:
1 Corinthians 8:9-13
9Be careful, however, that the exercise of your freedom does not become a stumbling block to the weak. 10For if anyone with a weak conscience sees you who have this knowledge eating in an idol's temple, won't he be emboldened to eat what has been sacrificed to idols? 11So this weak brother, for whom Christ died, is destroyed by your knowledge. 12When you sin against your brothers in this way and wound their weak conscience, you sin against Christ. 13Therefore, if what I eat causes my brother to fall into sin, I will never eat meat again, so that I will not cause him to fall.

Now, I know this verse is talking about food that has been sacrificed to idols, but just read it again and think about it in the context of swearing. Even though you may personally consider swearing to be alright, your brother might not feel that way, and since swears are taboos in our culture, using them around someone else would pretty much destroy your witness as a Christian. As Christians we are called to a higher, holier standard of living. No matter what your personal opinion on the matter is, the fact remains that cussing is universally accepted as a bad thing to do, so what will people think when they hear a "christian" belting out those f-bombs?

And I mean really, it's not that hard to substitute your cuss words with something milder. Personally, I think it's a lot more fun to yell something like "Flibbergiblets!" and, as Mary sort of brought up, humorous phrases like that actually sometimes lessen the seriousness or pain of the situation.

So I guess my verdict is that what kind of language you use when you're alone is really between you and God. There's no way to know exactly what His sentiments are on swears, but I'm sure we'll find out on that day of judgement. Personally, if it's something iffy, I would rather stay away from it.
But there's no doubt that we should all steer clear of foul language while around others. That should be a no-brainer.

Okay, I think I'm done.

Right. For example, the word "bloody" is a horribly, horribly bad word to say in England, but it's really not that bad in America. The word "bloody" is not inherently bad, it's just societal context. I can even use that word in the exact same context in America and nobody will even bat an eye.

As such there are places overseas where towns are named with the F-word because it simply isn't a bad word over there. You could say it all day and nobody would even care or have any problem with it.

So yes, the problem is us, not the words.

My mother, a conservative middle-aged woman who takes great offense at the more extreme versions of darn and heck, refers to all fecal matter as s--- because that's how it's always translated from Asian languages into English ^_^; Even some textbooks or children's movies will be subtitled into English with that word ^_^;

As for keeping a tight rein on your tongue, I always thought that it applied not to swearing but to gossiping, lying, and telling other people things that were told to you in confidence.

For the record, I do swear, but I try to be polite, meaning I don't do it unless I'm around people that I'm close to. If one of my friends were to tell me that it bothers them, I would stop doing it around them, but that hasn't happened so I assume it doesn't bother anybody.
