I watched it three times in the theaters with different people each time. I wore an Indiana Jones-esque hat and jacket to the midnight showing too. Ha ha. I'd say the movie stood up to the hype, but it didn't quite surpass The Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Last Crusade (which are both in my top ten favorite movies). :)

Hmmm. hard one to answer. I can't say it lived up to the hype, but it was better then pretty good. I went in not expecting it to live up to the previous movies, I think it'd be foolish to do so. and, I was surprised, it was better then I thought. Good movie and worth watching, but don't try to compare it with the other three, or you'll just end up saying "it sucks" when it's a decent movie.

I just saw it (I mean, JUST saw it - I just got home). *** is my vote.

George Lucas should not be allowed to make any more movies EVER.

High points:
- More Indiana Jones! Yay!
- Indy/Marion FTW
- Shia LaBeouf didn't suck, but delivered a solid performance (was not looking forward to his presence)
- Soviets made perfectly acceptable replacement Nazis
- I WANT THAT HARLEY

Meh points:
- Some awkwardly delivered lines
- Couldn't really find a reason to like LaBeouf's character
- Finding it a stretch to have Indy be ex-OSS and a colonel to boot
- Three waterfalls = cheesy
- Oxley was a bit under-developed
- Hard to believe that Indy could have a son and never know about it (child support?)
- The ants were meh.
- Surviving a nuke in a lead-lined fridge was pushing it IMO
- The target town wouldn't have been that fancy (shiny new cars, etc.)

Suck points:
- Pointless CG prairie dogs
- Pointless CG monkey scenes
- FRIGGIN' SPACE ALIENS FROM SPACE
- George Lucas. 'Nuff said.

It was fun, but the aliens were epic fail and didn't fit the tone of the previous films. I'll end up buying the DVD, but it wasn't as good as the earlier films.

Good movie and worth watching, but don't try to compare it with the other three, or you'll just end up saying "it sucks" when it's a decent movie.

. . . why the heck WOULDN'T we compare it to the previous films? They are part of the same franchise, you know.

As opposed to space aliens from underwater? ;)

I kid, I kid. XD Still like someone else said I fail to see how everyone has a major problem with the aliens when Temple of Doom had a guy who ripped out people's hearts and showed it to them with it still beating, as they were lowered into a lava pit and the still beating heart which was totally separated from the body burst into flames.

Space aliens are at least more plausible than that, you have to admit.

Also I've heard most people say that while this film doesn't stack up to Raiders or Crusade, that it was better than Temple of Doom at least. In fact now that I think about it while it was certainly acceptable, Temple of Doom really wasn't that good.

Maybe that's the problem? I don't know...

Yeah, yeah, to-may-to to-mah-to.

And I'm with you on Temple of Doom, Nate. Silliness. The minecart ride was awesome, though.

As a standalone movie, the latest Indiana Jones was entirely forgettable.

And, as the next chapter in the continuing "series", it was perhaps as low as Temple of Doom, if not lower.

However, I don't think that was the point.

Crystal Skull was an homage to the fans, to the folks who made the franchise possible from the beginning. There were so many nods (including Marion) to the nostalgic that it makes me think that was the only reason Lucas chose to resurrect Indiana Jones (aside from perhaps the profit motive). He's giving a final "thank you" to the faithful (something that wouldn't work as well with a Star Wars vehicle).

Aw, c'mon, this was the 50's. You could have made a space capsule out of one of those refrigerators.
