What kinds of fans scare you the most?

I do happen to have a random obsession with Kadaj. However, I will NEVER address myself as a Kadaj fangirl just because I DON'T like him because of his looks, though those are a bonus ^^. Anywayz..

I DEPISE:
- yaoi/yuri crap .... the Kingdom Hearts thing is Sick!... especially Sora and Roxas... nasty!!!!! please ppl tell me y its considered hot????

- Highpitched voiced valleygirls who only look up anime for hot guys...example: "OMG!!! Sasuke, is like, smexylicious!" ... **SHUDDER

Anywayz just to add to the whole mecha isn't popular in America... I personally have watched Gundam SEED Destiny in both sub and dub and personally I prefer dub... just me tho... MECHA ROX! lol

- I've never heard of the term "furries" but I do happen to have this issue with cats... I don't know if its just because their cool or what....*kinda of some spiritual stuff going on here* sigh.. I kind of have this problem with dreaming I'm a black cat and....messed up stuff...btw my rant is done.

If you don't know what some of those mean, it might be likely that you don't want to know, and don't look them up (particularly the last 2). I'm not responsible for the results of such ill-advised searching.

yeah, these. I was hoping for an explanation of each one.

I don't mind learning.

Please, feel free to say what each, including the last two, are.

Uh, there's literally no possible way to explain the last term within the rules of CAA, and I'm not even joking. I can explain a couple of the others though.

Lolicon - suggestive drawings of underage girls.

Shoutacon - the same, but with boys.

Meganekko - glasses fetish

Nekomimi - catgirls

Yeah, seriously, I am not joking either. I am NOT going to tell you what those last 2 are, and don't try to find out.

Fujoshi :: rabid fangirl, usually referring to perverted ones (I believe the term translates to something like "dirty girl"). Obsession with BL is integral.

Otaku :: I think we know this. Anime/manga geek. The word can also be used with other fandom-- computer geek, mystery geek, kitchen appliance geek, etc. In the West, fans use the word really eagerly; in Japan, calling yourself an otaku is sort of akin to calling yourself a freak, but that doesn't stop people. The negative connotation of the word sprang up during the 80s, when otaku Miyazaki Tsutomu serial murdered young girls, supposedly influenced by his H-loli games. I would like to note that some people think that calling someone an otaku is this hugely terrible insult that someone would kill you for; it's not necessarily the case. With the advent of Densha Otoko, the term has become a bit more positive and accepted.

Otome :: female otaku. Some people confuse this with fujoshi

Maidcon :: fetish/complex for maids

Okamacon :: OK, this isn't necessarily anime-related, but a sort of homosexual complex, sometimes associated with gay or crossdressing bars. I bring this term up because well, actually, it's not relevant at all, but I was sort of thinking of female butler cafes (when the girls dress up as male effeminate butlers and serve female customers), and I don't think it has a term. Okama are only male, though. (My thought process is really mergh today, sorry)

This is probably not an appropriate place for definitions (though it's fine that some have already been given). Tyrel, if you want to create a thread for this kind of thing that would be fine, or you could utilize a source like Wikipedia. The internet can provide answers to most of this, though I don't recommend looking up some of these terms on a Google image search...

minakichan wrote:Hm~ fujoshi, otaku, otome, lolicon, shoutacon, maidcon, okamacon, meganekko, nekomimi, eroguru, futanari... are what i can think of on the top of my head.

I suppose it's just as well you misspelled the second to last, as the less attention it gets the better. That's the only one on your list that truly makes me feel its fans are disturbed.

Frankly, I'm just concerned that even a place like Wikipedia would have pictures, so I'm glad some people are explaining on here. I'd hate to be the one at a convention who's like "What are you guys yelling about?" and the person goes, "Oh, it's _______!" And I'm like "What's that?" and they show me and I go home scarred for the rest of my life.

Not that that's ever going to happen, but its good to know what these things are so you can avoid them if they're totally bad. So thanks to whoever posted the definitions for the "okay to explain" words.

*clears throat* Actually, I did look into YYH after seeing a picture of Youko Kurama (and into Spiral after seeing Eyes). And I do have my squealing moments, but honestly, when taken in light of my personality.... *shrugs* Besides, it's not like I search for shirtless pics or do other... disturbing things to posters. I like to look, not fantasize. I'm probably on the lower, more harmless rung of fangirl. That said, a gorgeous jerk is still a jerk.

If there's a particular yaoi or yuri pairing that is genuinely plausible given the canon, or in fact is canon, I don't really fault people for writing that pairing as such in a fanfic. For whatever reason, though, I find that yaoi and yuri fans have an almost bizarre need to take a straight character and make him gay or lesbian even when there really are plenty of gay and lesbian anime characters to make plausible yaoi or yuri fanfics out of. It's quite puzzling to me...

*cough* Gundam Wing, anyone? SO many non-canonical pairings... And honestly, I prefer subs, but I'm a purist in many non-anime aspects as well (and hearing the English (Fruits Basket) Yuki's voice made me want to cry). But honestly, I've seen dubs that aren't bad aren't bad.

And in answer to the question, I'd say the perverted fans scare me.

Please don't murder me! Mine would be overly (I mean OVERLY) obsessive Naruto fans. There's the level of obsession, but then there's a total new level beyond that level (the religious level or the delirium in which the fan thinks they actually living in the show).

YAY 4 NARUTARDZ. I really have no problem with the 12-year-old ones-- boys will be boys-- but when adults act that way, it gets scary =D

I've kind of seen the Narutards drop off somewhat since the show was released here. Most of them became to cool for school when it became "mainstream."

I basically consider Wikipedia safe to browse. Unless you're very young or very sheltered, none of its content will be shocking. That means some of these topics have no pictures at all...

Nah, I've actually seen some pretty scary, nearly pornographic-level images on Wiki. Will not mention where I found them; if you think hard enough, it shouldn't be difficult. Yes, I do happen to be young and sheltered, but I still think "normal" people would be kind of "eergh" on them as well.

On CAA? OH MY WORD, you should see Deviant Art and Neon Dragon Art's public drawing board! It's insane (like the Plague, man). I used to be ok with Naruto, now I'm totally sick of the name itself (my sister, a Naruto fan, strongly agrees with me).
I have a feeling Death Note is turning into this state, too. I need to find an UNmainstream anime/manga--seriously. Sorry if I offended someone once again, but ya'll seriously need to turn the notch down on your fandomness. Draw the line somewhere!!

Yeah, Death Note is totally turning into it as well. I feel like the old man complaining about them young whippersnappers with their loud noisy music and their dropping pants and their terribly written yaoi smut... What happened to the good old days of visible blue skies and slide rules and discussions about the stuff that actually matters, like plot?

There are tons of good unmainstream anime and manga. You just need to look a little harder, and to burn any copy of Shounen Jump within a 10 meter radius.

It's always a shame when the fans makes a show seem way better than it actually is. I like Naruto, but I'm not going to tell you that it's the best series ever because it isn't. Fangirls, in their attempt to spread the "awesomeness" of any given series, end up doing the exact opposite. I mean, after hearing "omg naruto nd inuyahsa nd bleach r teh best showz evr nd sas-k iz hot nd he iz my bfriend lololololol nd so is sesshy so back off!1 haha" it's no wonder that certain series loose their taste. -_-

You could very well be a better judge of this. By this point I may be jaded enough that I'm out of touch with what would be offensive. We could post links and compare more objectively, but I assume we'll agree it's not worth the time.

It just occurred to me that the amount of time I spend looking for supplementary material for a series is inversely related to its popularity. When I find some obscure title I hunt about for things concerning it, but I basically don't touch the fandoms of more popular series.

Me too.

I don't have much access to unmainstream anime/manga. I barely watch anime, and the manga I get is from the library. I really hope I can get my hands on Claymore before the fandom apocalypse begins...then again, almost any anime/manga that reaches the American shore becomes fandomnized.

It is. I mean, Naruto has a nice concept and everything, but everything get s overshadowed by the fandom extremists. *sigh*

You're lucky. When I think I've discovered an unmainstream title, it eventually becomes popularized.

Sorry, but this is an attitude I'm not fond of.

If you truly enjoy an underground title, ideally, your goal as a fan would be to see it eventually recognized in the popular mainstream. Whenever I discover some obscure Manga or underrated Anime, I try to think who I can share it with. Liking or disliking a series simply because it is popular or unpopular is fairly shallow. If you like it, that's what's important.

And if the fandom fails, ignore them. It's not terribly difficult.

I guess the natural response would be to say, "Well, if fandom bugs you so much, just don't involve yourself with it." I don't know, I'm the kind of fan who, when I discover I really like something, I want to find someone I can discuss it with, to sort of compare notes, to see others' perspectives on it, and just, you know, bond over something that both of us enjoy. I think that enhances my experience with certain series, and shtuff. I'm always a bit disappointed when I read a manga that I grow to love, and no one has heard of it (happens ALL THE TIME ><), so I have to keep my excitement about it to myself. It's frustrating. I'd love to get that experience of fan fellowship again with Death Note; it's really a nostalgic feeling that I miss.

...and why yes, I AM a proselytizing fan. But all of my friends are sick of hearing me tell them what to read. -_- I think I'm a kind of fan that scares them the most.

Yeh, I would. It's just the fact that there are people overdoing it. Yes, and there will always be people who overdo it.
And I don't dislike popular series or judge things due to their popularity. I happen to read and like popular things, such as Death Note for instance.
I was listing what kind of fans I disliked, which the title of this thread suggested. :)

Again, I apologize, but your post comes off like a couple of people I could think of. There's a fair number of elitists who pride themselves on their underground tastes, and prefer it that way. "Mmm, nice and obscure for no weeaboos to touch."

That's Ok. I came off wrong in that post.

Like that, the extreme omg fangirl craziness is getting on me too. I guess I'm being like an old man, too  Hey, at least they're using their time doing that instead of robbing convenience stores and stuff, I guess.

I'm all for series becoming more popular if it doesn't have adverse effects. I would LOVE it if Pokemon Special got more popular-- that's fine with me, because it's not really a series that hoards of yaoi fangirls can easily take over (I could be wrong). I really want to see PLUTO in print in the US. Heck, if the series that I really liked became more popular, then maybe I could actually sell more fanart. In the case of Death Note, unfortunately, the quality of the work was actually affected by its popularity-- Ohba and Obata didn't expect it to be so popular, so they were pressed to come up with the infamous "second arc" all from scratch, in order to keep the series going on for a while. Now they're coming out with ridiculous stuff like a photobook full of pics of L at the amusement park just to please the fangirls. Noplz.

....Disney incest?! how is that even possible...

I seriously think that lots of (not all) the fangirls into this whole forbidden love thing are just trying to feel mature and hardcore rebel-- essentially equating "unconventional" and "against social norms" to mean "liberal and open-minded." It really gets to the point that if you don't personally care to see two men make out, it must mean that you're a narrow-minded ignorant homophobic conformist bigot against social progress and human rights. I think that's much more closed-minded and unreasonable, but those are the kinds of people that are the hardest to reason with...

I consider Kingdom Hearts yaoi to be Disney slash, which is why I say, "No, you little fujoshi, you are NOT being mature and awesome and hardcore sexay rebel fringe by writing AkuRoku ero."
