Most original Christian artist?

I was just curious who you would pick for most original Christian artist? This means someone who completely came up with their own style or sound. They could have borrowed from here or there but at least built up on this adding their own flair or whatever... something that sets them apart from everyone else out there.

You don't have to like this band/artist but I would be interested in checking them out if they exsist. I don't want an alternative to a secular counterpart, I want something that is original and not just a "Christian" version of whoever...

Any suggestions? I crave something different and new... I really don't care what it sounds like cause I want it to be something I havent heard before so it...

I don't know, Evanescence maybe. They were pretty original when they first came out.
But I'm sure you've heard their stuff.

Yeah, not really my style, but some of their stuff is good to listen to every now and then. Some bands I like, like the Ws and P.O.D have their equivalent in the secular world but I still enjoy them. And John Reuben's pretty good.

Hands down and hands down hard, the most original Christian artist is ThouShaltNot, which I play a lot of on my streams. And, of course, almost none of the Christian artists I play are "The Christian version of x" on anything.

Another artist that comes to my mind is Mat Kearny. He grew up liking hip-hop, but after becoming a Christian in college he also started liking the David Crowder Band acoustic worship...so he mixed together a folksy, acoustic guitar-based sound with rap. As far as I know, there aren't any other artists out there that have done something like that, although I could be wrong. He's also starting to become popular on secular stations, I think.

As to contemporary artists, I can't say that many are creating new styles of music. And I say that because I can't really think of one.

Personally, I'd say Mae is one of the most original sounds for Christian music (then again, I'm biased). Naturally, though, I'm comparing it to praise music and that kind of thing, which I probably shouldn't be doing (since it's not really praise music...o_o). But oh well; at the moment, I can't think of anything else. XD

I must admit I tend to consider the classical era the high point of Christian music due to its capacity for sucessfully telling extended stories, like Bach's rendition of Christ's Passion according to St. John.

Most original would be David Crowder band and Showbread. My reasonings

David Crowder Band: They infuse turn-tables, Banjos and basically every other intrament (yes even Keytar) into there music.

Showbread: They changed there styles of music so much for No Sir..... and AOR that they can't not be original and also they have such a great sense of humour of becuase of there tongue and cheek lyrics.

Yes, of course. After all, the birth of making music tends to rely upon listening to other music to one extent or another.

Can't say much for 'sound'. Most Christian bands I've heard make me think, "We're trying real hard not to sound like Metallica, or Red Hot Chili Peppers, or Modest Mouse, or [fill in the blank]".

For content, I'd have to give it to Rich Mullins. During the time when everybody was trying to out-worship plastic Sandi Patty, Rich came across as Real.

Yeah, they really are just in a league of their own. Their music is very different from most bands these days, as their guitar work is really angular and not just power chord after power chord. The drumming is incredible. If you've listened to Catch For Us the Foxes (and A->B Life to a lesser extent), it's really apparent. Aaron's vocals are so different from anything else, it's impossible to compare them. His words, also, are three or four notches above about 90% of current Christian music. mwY is just incredible.

I went and found a band on MySpace called ThouShaltNot, but I'm not sure if it's the right one. The one on MySpace was alright, but I mean, they weren't that original. There are a lot of indie rock bands that sound like that.

That Dude: If you are fond of Christian industrial and electropop music, it is criminal for you to not have their albums The Holiness of Now and The White Beyond in your collection.

Well, its only with this most recent album from which all the samples are taken that they've begun to go in an Indie/New Wave direction. Before that however, they produced Industrial, Darkwave, and Electropop music which I think is awesome (though I do kind of like the new stuff too). I do however play a good deal of their music on my Shoutcast stream Seraphim Radio.
