I'm a bit curious now: how exactly is the 'battery' deal working with Wiimote? Are they meaning "just plug in a couple of AAs," because I'd be a bit worried if this is so. They should at least have it be rechargeable. o.O

I'm a bit vexed about the release date. I understand Twilight Princess will dual release on the GC and Wii, and I also understand that it will launch with the system, but on Amazon I see that Twilight Princess will be releasing on I think it was November 2nd. Shouldn't that mean the Wii will also be releasing then?

Sites like Amazon and stores like EBGames make up random release dates for games, because a game cannot be put in the system unless it has a release date attached. Never trust the release dates listed on store sites or even from the stores themselves, because most of the time they are arbitrary and placed solely so the game will stay in their system.

Believe me, I found this out the hard way repeatedly after EBGames kept giving me false release dates for Wild ARMs, and went on the official website and found out Agetec, the company producing the game, had never given an official release date.

Oh snap. Wii isn't region free:

Nintendo UK has admitted that the Wii console is region-locked after all, despite comments from Nintendo of America to the contrary.

Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz in London this afternoon, a spokesperson admitted, "We are region-locked," and said the US arm of the company had made a mistake in saying otherwise.

That doesn't really bother me, since I don't normally get imports anyway. I can see how that might cause a problem for some though :/

I dunno... I'd wait until later to decide whether or not Wii is region-free.

What if it's just the Euro Wii's that aren't region free?

What if, in some weird, disorganized mess, NOE didn't get the memo?

I find it weird how NOA says it is, and the very next day NOE says it's not.

It's confusing, so I'm going to wait for Shigeru, Reggie, or somebody else high in the ranks of Nintendo to be interviewed, and asked whether or not Wii is region free.

Either that, or wait until launch and read hands-on previews by the community.

>_>

Aaaaaaaaaaand, look what I found. :)

Call of Duty 3 Wii video. :)

I'm thinking (/hoping) that what's going on is that UK just decided to 'region-lock' their systems (for whatever odd reason), since they already stated before "first-party is free, third-party can decide for themselves."

Also, IMPORTANT QUESTION!!

This is actually something my friend wondered about first: is the size of the TV going to matter when the detection band is attached? Or can you simply change the caliber or such so that the controller will work with any TV?

I'm sure it could be calibrated. They wouldn't dare market it if there were problems on different sized TVs.

Okay, I'm hoping so. That was pretty much my friend's problem with it, as he didn't think it would work on different sized ones, but, as you said, that'd be a pretty stupid marketing decision on Nintendo's part if it was so. =p

I'm still a bit curious as to how the detection band actually works, though. o.o

Although I don't know if it has been officially stated at any press conferences but I have read interviews where Nintendo employees have commented on "some sort of calibration system" but the details on how these are likely to work are somewhat thin on the ground.

Ooh, harsh editorial.

Know what the funny thing about this article is? The guy who wrote it used to run Planet Gamecube and is probably one of the biggest Nintendo fans that exist. To see one of Nintendo's staunchest supporters write an article like this, it's pretty interesting.

I think the guy just expected too much. In the end, it's all videogames. I think the gamcube is the best, as it has the most amount of amazingly fun games. (first party or not. Naruto GNT 4 is probably one of the best fighters in existence)

I doubt Nintendo will have a problem with wii being a success for one reason alone: The DS has taken over Japan. Since most people seem to see the wii as the successor to DS, they shouldn't have any trouble being successfully in the Japaneses market, especially with the PS3 launching with a measly 100k consoles there.

Now as for the other regions, there's no way to be certain. If 3rd party games don't sell well on Wii, it's thier own fault. If they continue to give Wii ports with wiimote controls tacked on, they shouldn't expect to sell well. However, if they create new, innovative games, they have a real shot at making some very good money. It's the same as what happened with the DS.

If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things."

I don't think the guy was saying that the Wii will be a failure. What he's saying is while it will be successful, it won't be the smashing success everyone seems to think it is.

His point was, no one would call the N64 or Gamecube failures, they were successes, but they didn't dominate the console world, and he's saying Wii won't either. There's a lot of potential; but then, there was a lot of potential for N64 and look how it did. It wasn't horrible, but it was still topped by Playstation.

People tend to forget history. The N64 and Gamecube had the same huge reaction the Wii had this E3. Everyone thought the N64 would rule the market; it didn't. Everyone thought the Gamecube was the second coming of Nintendo; it wasn't.

This is evident with the PS3 as well. People forget the PS2 launch. Shortage of consoles? Yeah there was. Hardware failures? To the nth degree. Huge launch price and no "must-have" games? While the price wasn't quite as high as it is this time, the PS2 was pretty dang expensive at launch, and had very few good games.

And now look at the PS2, it completely dominated the console world. People have a short memory, the PS2 had the same problems as the PS3, and it still came out on top.

You mention the DS, but Nintendo has always been the king of the handheld market, always. It's the console area that they've had trouble with since the SNES days.

That article isn't saying Wii is going to be a failure. Neither am I. The point is that everyone seems convinced Nintendo is going to dominate again, and history has shown that that's what they thought about the previous two consoles too.

And this is coming from a guy who has a Wii on preorder, isn't going to buy a PS3 for over a year, and doesn't care about Xbox. :P

Yeah, I can see what you're saying. The one thing I would say the Wii may really have going for it this time is the cheaper price tag compared to those of the other two, but again, we won't know for sure. Also, I think it was actually about midway in its life that the GC ended up becoming pretty big, anyways. :/

*nods sagely* I would agree with you. And to me, I really don't care one bit about what console "wins". Who decides these things anyway? Sales? Votes? All I know is that the Wii is gonna really rock, and it doesn't matter if its on top or bottom. The whole reason for playing games is to have fun, and everybody has a preference. If somebody happens to like Sony or Microsoft better, there's no point in having a console debate with them, like so many people seem to like to do these days (I'm guilty myself)
So anyway, I agree with you, Kae. It probably won't take top seats, but I think it could be one of their strongest consoles yet.
Oh and the SNES was still statistically on top during its heyday. The genesis may have crept up there towards the end though, and I heartily agree that N64 and GCN lagged behind the playstations a fair amount.
And now I'm being redundant, so *shuts up*

I don't think it will take over the console world, I think it has potential to be among Nintendo's best selling products.

While the DS is a handheld, and Nintendo has always been the king there, no handheld before the DS has seen such wide acceptance outside of the core gamer. Nintendo has chosen to not compete with PS3/xbox 360 (as far away from that as they can, anyways) and has expanded thier own market.

Also: The difference between the PS3 launch and the PS2 launch is that PS3 doesn't have a year on it's main competitors. (DC was dead before PS2 even launched :( ) The PS2 also had the advantage of DVD being a clear winner in the format wars. PS3's blu-ray is just behind HD-DVD right now. Although, this would be something for the PS3 thread, so I shall stop myself.

Mii channel's seem interesting, but I need to see more on what can really be done with them and how well the "Miis" will be utilized in future games (I'm also a bit curious to see if they allow new add-ons for the Miis later, like shirt designs, new face parts, accesorites, etc. ).
