Okay, Michael is (or was this morning) just in surgery to put the new heart in! This is really amazing, since he has only been on the transplant list for a week. This just goes to show that your prayers really have helped, thank you. All I can ask is that you keep praying that the surgery went without a hitch, and his body will accept the new heart, and that he will continue to heal. I will definitely post when i find out how he's doing post-op.

It's day 1 after Michael's heart transplant. His surgeon characterized the technical aspects of the surgery as "perfect!" There were some issues (there always are) including some infected fluid along one of the cannulas from his berlin heart. This may increase his chance of post-op infection. He will remain on IV antibiotics for a few weeks. Michael did very well post-op. He had his eyes open immediately after surgery and was near to getting his breathing tube out. There had to be some adjustments with one of his drains so he needed to be resedated a little. This AM his new right ventricle was a little sluggsh (happens often post transplant), so he was placed on nitric oxide gas and sedated for the whole day today. This allowed his heart and Michael to spend some time getting to know each other. If he's doing okay tomorrow the plan is for exubation. He may also need another day of rest. In any event all of his vitals are great and he looks very good!!

Again, please remember the gracious family who allowed donation of Michael's new heart at a time of great loss to them.

Michael moved out of the ICU yesterday. He still has some trouble with nausea and itching (a common thread throughout his hospitalization). It is quite amazing to think where Michael has been and where he is now. He truly has had miraculous intervention!

Wow. I totally missed this, but it is amazing to see God work through all of this. As was stated before, organ donation is always a bittersweet thing, because you know someone died that another might live. Still, I believe that everyone should be an organ donor. We look forward to a resurrected body, so we have no need for our organs to be buried with us. While I respect the decision of someone to not be an organ donor, I would highly encourage all of you to be donors.
Our lives are but a vapor, let us not let waste our time and breath on vanities, but let us spend ourselves for the Kingdom, seeking a better resurrection.

well this has been long in coming, due to various things going on in my life i haven't been on in a while, but i thought i would give another update to show how well michaels doing.
He has passed the three month mark post transplant. He has been going back to St Louis frequently to have check ups and biopsies of his heart. Most recently he was there last week. All of his biopsies have shown no rejection or clinically insignificant rejection. He has been weaned
off of many of his meds; initially he was on about 12 meds most of which
were twice a day. Now he's on 5, next month he should drop down to 3. If you see him you would never guess that he was ever sick. He runs and plays and can keep up with anyone! He is truly miraculous, remember that he had severe pulmonary hypertension, he had severely elevated antibody levels (high risk for rejection, not transplantable at many hospitals), and had an active infection at the time of his transplant (another reason why not to transplant someone). Since his transplant he has not had any evidence of pulmonary hypertension, no evidence of significant rejection, and no evidence of infection.

On Aug 26 , Michael was introduced at the beginning of the Cardinals baseball game as a representative of the transplant program at Children's hospital. Dr. Gandhi was there to hold him during that introduction!

All you have to do is go back to the begining of this thread to see how sick he was, and the various complications that arose during his hospitalization. It truly is a miracle how this event that could have been so tragic, turned out better than hoped for. This will probably be the last post in this thread, unless there is something else significant to post.

God Bless all of you, thank you for supporting our family and
Michael!!

That is wonderful. It's nice to hear about this miraculous child once more! And thanks again for the regular updates; it's always nice when we can pray for someone while also being able to know the history of the request and how the person is doing along the way.

Praise God!
