Bass Questions...**HELP!!**

Postby KarateGirl » Mon Feb 09, 2004 5:41 pm

I am currently...learning....the bass. I'm having some problems memorizing all the notes, how did you start memorizing them?
Do you play with your index finger and middle finger, sorta walking them? Or is that wrong? I only have one video tape and a "jazz scales for bass" book (left over from my brother.)
Any over all tips and anything to help me stop bad habbits would be awesome.
Also any websites with beginner scales and exersizes would be rad too.
Feel free to PM me with any advice too.

Thanks,

-KG

I'm in her shoes too, so if someone could help us both out, that'd be great.

I'm learing bass too but I've been playing for about five years and I never really took the time too learn the notes because I got so used too playing by ear. But everyone already mentioned the sites I was going too mention too. But yea that's cool that there are bass players here I wish more people would play bass because it's cool.

I'm actually in my school's jazz band and i play bass for them. I've been playing for a little over 3 years now, but only in the past year have i taken it seriously. Any bass book by Mel Bay is pretty good. They are pretty cheap too, i doubt if it will come to five bucks. For the neck, you want to use as many fingers as possible (excluding thumb). I learned this the hard way. It's pretty hard for me to play when notes are all over the place, because i have to flick my wrist all around the neck. Ummm.... if you have any specific questions PM me back.

I also play with my index and middle finger. I dont think that it really makes a difference whether you play liike that or with a pick, just do whatever is more comfortable for you. I'm not really sure if there is a trick to memorizing notes other than, practice practice practice. Before you know it, you won't even have to think about it anymore.
