Best way to do all this is to get the installer version of Firebird, install that, then goto the plugins (or is it the extensions) page and do the auto-install of Java (as well as Flash and any of the other plugins).
I had problems initially, the latest version of Sun's Java needs certain registry entries set so it can find where to install it, the installer version takes care of that automatically. I had fits getting Shockwave installed (Flash wasn't a problem, Java gave me fits initially, but Shockwave was very particular).
BTW, did you double-click the file that was on your desktop? Sounds like it dumped the download there by default (rather than using the auto-installer), maybe you can just install it that way (assuming you have all the registry entries, there is a .REG file you can get from Mozilla's website for that).
