The NES Nostalgia Thread

Postby rocklobster » Sat Jul 15, 2006 12:30 pm

With the new Wii from Nintendo coming soon, I thought I'd post a thread for the first system they ever made. Who else has fond memories of the NES?

I didn't own an NES when I was a kid, actually. I played it at friends' houses, but I didn't personally own an NES until about a year after I joined the Navy.

I didn't own a game system until the SNES, but I had a couple friends who I would play Mario with on NES.

Yes indeed, I had an NES. Still do, actually. It's a tad dusty, but it still works fine (show of hands...how many of you use the "blow on the cartridge" technique in order to make your games work? XD). Super Mario Bros. 3, Duck Hunt, Bases Loaded, TMNT, Duck Tails...I have tons of good memories from the NES. XD

Oh yeah! I still have mine! In my closet, to be exact. I have the NES, the SNES and the N64...three generations of Nintendo systems--But because I'm not a gamer, I never did invest in a PS2 or X-Box.

Anybody remember blowing into the cartrige/machine to try and make it work? Ah, those were the days! The cartriges were so rugged, you could drop 'em like a million times, and it'll still work! Not like today's fancy and delicate CD's--drop 'em the wrong way, and they're scratched!

Back then, you only had the control pad (Up, Down, Right, Left--that's it!) Start button, select button, A and B. Somehow, we managed without fifty buttons and 360 Degree controls. Sure, they came up with a flat control pad you could buy to go easy on your thumbs, but that was it! Those 5 buttons were all you had to get Mario through over 9 worlds!

The light gun was pretty cool! It was an orange and white gun that made a realistic clicking sound when the black trigger was squeezed. It was really simple--unlike it's counterpart the Super Scope 6 for the SNES that used 6 AA batteries and a infared port. All you had to do was plug in the gun and start shooting!

I still have two NES' with the Light Guns and everything. Strangely, though, one of my systems seems to have issues with Super Mario and won't play it but it will play (in theory) anything else. I also own an original Famicom system.

Azier's meager list of games for NES:

Super Mario
Super Mario 2
Super Mario 3
Legend of Zelda
Battletoads

Azier's growing list of games for Famicom:

Dracula Densetsu (Castlevania 3)
Dragon Quest 1
Dragon Quest 2
Dragon Quest 3
Dragon Quest 4
Dragon Ball Z: Kyousou Saiyajin
Dragon Ball Z 2: Gekishin Freeza
Final Fantasy 1
Final Fantasy 2
Final Fantasy 3
JJ (3D World Runner)
Street Fighter 2010
Super Mario

All right, another person who blows on cartriges! XD

It works well! And blowing in the machine does, too...I usually do both before playing my games. XD *hugs her NES*

Hahahaha, exactly! I would probably play the NES more often, if it didn't take so much work to get it started (and if it wasn't gathering dust behind who-knows-what kind of clutter in my brother's room...XD).

There was a certain formula one would use to get a game to work in the NES--

  • Take a deep breath and blow inside the cartrige (Or Cart for short) and the console three times each.
  • Slam the Cart five times in the console
  • Push in on the cart while locking it in the machine
  • Press the reset button 10 times in rapid succession, then power the console off, leave it alone for 5 seconds, then turn it back on and reset one last time.
Works every time! Of course, you would be so exhausted by the time you finished the process, you would just wrap the black cord around the rectangle console, change the channel to Nickeloden, and enjoy the rest of your Sunday afternoon watching "Legends of the Hidden Temple" (Don't act like you don't know what I'm talking about!)

Lmao... that sounds like us and everyone on our block. We don't have an NES anymore but we went through like 3 of them. The first one we bought new with the light gun and stuff and that worked great for a couple years... then the controllers started going out and you had to press that B button REALLY hard. Then then the machine... blow, pop in, turn on, reset, reset reset, pop out, blow game, blow machine, put back in... stick it in half way (that actually worked sometimes), pull it back out repeat repeat repeat... woot finally worked!!

Hahaha! Yes!! I used to watch that show all the time!! XD Although, we had a slightly different method at my house...Something like "Blow into the cartrige and the console 3 times each, then try it. Then reset it. Then take the cartrige out and blow into it again. Then try it again. Reset it again, turn off the power, turn on the power, etc." XD Ours was more of a "trial and error" exercise, really. But hey, whatever works. XD

The Famicom is worse. The controllers are automatically permanantly attatched to the system itself, and the cords are VERY short. I've accidentally jarred my system by forgetting about the length and pulling the controller a little too hard and lost my game. @_@

And you know something else that was great about those days? No Grand Theft Auto ruining video games' reputation! That's right, there was no ESRB back then!

Yep, no ESRB, Mystique was free to release their pornographic Atari games with no reaction from the government whatsoever. Oh yeah, and Panesian's pornographic NES games. Those totally didn't ruin the reputation of video games.

I always thought violence was okay as long as there wasn't any sex. I guess in the NES days, you could have sex galore in your video games, but no violence.

Blah. Give me GTA any day.

I always blew in the cartridges and the console too! It worked most of the time. My console is in my closet, collecting dust. 1 of the controllers works, but the other one has a broken down button. I kinda feel bad for our poor NES getting no love in the closet... I have too many other consoles, though. I still say Super Mario Bros. 3 is the best game ever made.

I had a nintendo with ROB and a light gun. I think I had 25 games at the height of my NES usage...

Super mario Brothers
Super Mario 3
Original Mario Bros
Donkey Kong
Millipede
Knight Rider
Image Fighter
Rambo
Commando
Bionic Commando
1942
Who Framed Rodger Rabbit
Dick Tracy
Bible Adventures
King of Kings
Exodus
Spiritual Warfare
Joshua
Pesterminator
Section Z
Duck Hunt
Gyromite
Hogan's Alley
Dig Dug II

I don't have any of those game anymore (there were some more I can't remember) but I got another Nintendo, and got 4 games

Ninja Turtles (the first one, not the Arcade one)
Tetris
Rygar
Super Mario 3

*sigh*

I should get some more Nintendo games...

Bah, Tetris. It was fun, but for me, Lemmings was the real brain teaser!

The NES was so cool when it came out. I played a lot of Techmo Bowl.
And yes -- I blew on cartidges too.

One of our NES controllers got to where the left button would make you go down. o.o

Yep, no ESRB, Mystique was free to release their pornographic Atari games with no reaction from the government whatsoever. Oh yeah, and Panesian's pornographic NES games. Those totally didn't ruin the reputation of video games.

I was gonna mention that. I believe some of the worst pornographic games where indeed on the Atari and NES. And there was one old, old arcade games that involved you mutilating people in a torture room or something. Yeah...

Oh yes: I demand Twinbee.
