No actually it's not THAT cool, but I just love reading stuff like this...

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=599&ncid=762&e=9&u=/nm/20040124/media_nm/industry_kazaa_dc

It looks like kazaa (sherman networks) has received permission from at least one judge to sue the music/movie companies that are using their software to harass users.

People who write below their abilities in order to crank out tons of books and make a buck. Especially Christian authors who do that. Outsiders judge us for it, and make fun of us for it, and it makes Jesus look bad. We of all artists on earth should be the most concerned with doing our best possible work at all times. We of all people should write with all our hearts, as if writing for the Lord and not for men.

It is if you download copyrighted works, but if you are downloading things that people upload of their own free will (like on MP3.com, for instance), it is not illegal. That is the stated purpose of the network, although it is mostly used for illlegal file sharing. If it ever became totally legitimate, it would be an excellent means of distributing material to a large number of people with minimal effort.

I was downloading some Game remixes from Overclocked Remix and I think I noticed that they list Kazaa as a way of getting their files (esp. to conserve their bandwidth) as well as using Bittorrant (SP?) which is a form of file sharing that I've seen used for distributing large files.

Kazaa has postitive uses (as did Napster when it was big).

Sadly I'm not sure if I'd be routing for Kazaa if they're sueing Kazaa Lite for removing all the stuff that made Kazaa a horrible technical problem.

I only download music if I have permission from the artists. If you're interested in some free, legal tracks, here are some:

Blindside-About a burning Fire
Kutless-Tonight
Kutless-Your Touch
Further Seems Forever-Pride War
Further Seems Forever-The Sound
Spoken-Forever More
Spoken-This Path
Spoken-A Question Alone

It's still VERY easy to get hold of Kazaa Lite, you just need to search for the program on WinMX. It might even work in the official Kazaa, but I won't recommend downloading that.

I agree. Aside from violating the user agreement (how many people have read that I wonder...), They have made it so that it has reduced functionality. For instance, the "My Media" info won't load, so every time you close the program you can't access your files that way. If you try to delete a file, the program has a seizure and shuts down. It's really a trade-off. Would you rather have the bonus features (particularly increased IP Address security ;)), or use the program as it is meant to be used.

Still regardless...No matter what it's illegal lol. But people won't be able to stop all these programs and comanies so...my question is...Why bother? I mean don't record companies and band's make enough money as it is? (Greed?)

Wow...madphilb knows about the OC REMIX. Cool, I thought I was the only one. I'm thinking about making some remixes myself in the future.

Just a little off-topic now...

Is downloading fansubbed anime illegal?

I used to get that sort of stuff from MP3.COM, but that sort of content seems to have dried up there... went seraching and found that one and another. Funny thing is I've reconized some of the names from the early files I downloaded from MP3.

Saint Kevin wrote:Is downloading fansubbed anime illegal?

hahahahahahahaahahahhaa

This is one of those things we should "stickey" a message with links to ALL the threads that have come up about this.

The simple answer is, yes, just as with any sort of copyright works that have not been given permission from the authors to be publically distributed freely (the authors in this case would be the original owners, the Anime companies themselves).

You'll find several different answers on this here.... might want to do a search for "fansubs" and/or "illegal" in the forum DB. ;)

To the original post, that is quite funny  I'm not sure what the threatening messages and stuff are all about but regardless it's hilarious!

Its kindof a shame they can't make a legitimate file-sharing network, but you don't really need it.. if you want to distribute something you just need to make a web-site, put it on there, and have people spread the word. That way, google picks it up, and whamo its popular :D I once made a very non-user friendly application but had one really popular site mention it on their homepage, and just like that I got 800 hits in a month! 90% of them probably deleted it after checking it out though :P

Actually, 800 hits in one month isn't really the order of magnitude we're talking about here. With some of the linux updates out over a P2P network, they can get up to 10 million in a DAY. These are 10+MB files sometimes, so doing it from one website isn't even possible. You' have to have... *thinks* *forget it: rounds*
What, serve just over a GB/sec? (Someone wanna check the math?)
