Exact Opposite

Postby cbwing0 » Mon Jan 19, 2004 3:51 pm

I thought about just posting this as a reply to the "Exact Double" thread, but it is different enough that it would be off-topic in there. So, the question is, what would you do if you met your exact opposite?

Of course this would not be the same as your exact double, because your opposite could be your true opposite in every way (you are alive, so if he/she were you exact opposite, they would be dead, for starters). Maybe it is better to think of your opposite as your nemesis. If you are good, they are evil, seeking to undermine you. Of course it becomes more interesting if they turned out to be good, because that would mean that you are the evil one.

If I met my nemesis, I would enlist my double to help defeat him. Either that, or I would confront him myself. Naturally my nemesis would have similar abilities, or he wouldn't be a true nemesis; but he would have goals, beliefs, values, friends etc. in opposition to my own. I think I could defeat someone like this, although the fact that I have prepared for it means that my nemesis also has, making victory that much more difficult.

Perhaps some of you actually have a nemesis. If you, what is that like?

If you haven't met your nemesis, do you think you could defeat them if you ever did?

Edit-Beating the game Resident Evil 3: Nemesis doesn't count as defeating your nemesis, unless your name happens to be Jill Valentine. :P

i dont think you can look at it as good or evil, everyone is a shade of grey, we do both good and evil, therefore they really wouldnt be much differant that your self, just suffering from the oppisite weaknesses.

This is really interesting... my nemesis - opposite in every way. This would be a true test in loving your enemies. I mean, if you disagreed on every stance, every characteristic, every belief - that would be tough. If I think about it this way, they would probably irritate me in every way, and it would make loving them extremely hard. Would he/she be stronger than you or weaker? I'm not sure about this one. If he is your opposite, there is a degree to strength and other characteristics, so would someone in the middle be stuck or what? Hmmm....

Since almost everyone here is a Christian, and your nemesis would have opposite values/beliefs, they would probably be atheists, cultists, etc. In that sense, they would be "evil."

He/She would be equally as strong as you, although probably with slightly different aptitudes as you say. This would make them a really dangerous foe, as you would have to fight with all of your strengths to overcome them.

"for we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against the ruled over places and powers and forces of darkness." (slight paraphrase)

If any of us consider our nemesis to be a human, we're missing something, but that's usually what our thinking gets us.

anyhow, someone with exact opposite beliefs from me, I guess that would be a test of Love... Don't know that, at the moment, I could pass, though...

This is interesting...

In my webcomic, the main character, Quar... I consider him almost the exact opposite of me in many ways. He isn't a true opposite, as he does have a high sense of honor, but in many ways, he is opposite of me in values.

Yes, and he is an athiest. It's fairly important to his character.

it'd be so opposite that in fact the oppositeness will spin all the way around and become exactly like me, but still being opposite. your true enemy is your own.

I considered laughing, but then realized it would be pointless (and I do understand the nature in which this was written, but I'll respond anywa). This particularly aphorism irks me to no end. It is true in a very limited sense in some areas, but most of the time opposites do not attract at all. If they did, why is this site completely filled with Christians who like anime, and why are the athiests who hate it are all banned?

But getting away from such tangents, I also find this topic quite interesting. It is far more difficult to pin down than the double thread, as we can't define exactly how your nemesis would be equal or opposing to you. Still, though, it would be very disturbing to see, at least as I envision it. All of abilities I possess... except evil. Very evil, as the case may be (see the Fears thread). As I interprete it, my nemesis would mainly have an opposite alignment, because if our ideals were opposite he (or is it she?) would have no respect whatsoever for logic.

If I have an opposite, I'll bet he can carry a tune.
The scientific method," Thomas Henry Huxley once wrote, "is nothing but the normal working of the human mind." That is to say, when the mind is working; that is to say further, when it is engaged in corrrecting its mistakes. Taking this point of view, we may conclude that science is not physics, biology, or chemistry—is not even a "subject"—but a moral imperative drawn from a larger narrative whose purpose is to give perspective, balance, and humility to learning.

If I have an opposite, I imagine that he/she (probably 'she') would be rather unintelligent, very good at musical instruments and singing, and would be very sociable. She'd also love dancing, particularly swing dancing.

MY opposite would be very interesting. He would have a straight body alignment and have incredible strength. He would be HUGE and be really chubby!

My opposite would probably be a workaholic and a morning person and would get irritated at the least little thing and would be Amish... sorta. Just to name a few differences.

Would my exact opposite be a boy? Would he or she be my blood-relative? My exact opposite would probably be extremely quiet, smart, hard-working, patient, and would have low self-esteem. But, then again, I can never be too sure. I can be all those things too......I'm sooooo confused.

It is possible that your opposite would also be of the opposite sex (but again, this is all hypothetical). Perhaps if you are a very masculine man, or feminine woman, your opposite/nemesis would be of the opposite sex. Their status as a nemesis is also important to keep in mind. They would be your opposite in many ways, but they would also have roughly equal abilities, so that it would take all of your strengths to overcome them. You might also add the principle that they are committed to causing you misery, so even if they had low self-esteem, low intelligence, etc, they would still work to undermine you (if they existed).

How fortunate the situation is entirely hypothetical. I can think of a lot of scary hypothetical situations, but not accomplishing anything.

"Opposites attract" according to my (non biblically based) belief means that opposite temperments attract... Quiet intelectuals are attracted to crowd pleasers. Steady, quiet worker people are attracted to dominating, in the front sort of people. And, in that respect, I've seen that to be true in most cases. The people with like temperments that get married... I don't know, it's rare and weird for some reason...

I don't believe that people with opposite values should get together, but they sometimes attract as well... That's not good, in my opinion.

What happens when the opposite temperments get together is that they change each other and sharpen each other, which is why they often end up acting the same, but they are still very different... They just work to either improve each other, or they give up and get divorced... The best couples are the ones who have the most problems they get over, I think.

Hehe... Sorry, this degraded into a "perfect mate" thing again...

I've found (only in my area) that this is rarely true. You'll find many people who have one or two things that appear to be opposite, and they're basically the same otherwise. But I suppose (and I have said as much) that it can hold true in some areas, or for certain types of people. [Ok, so people who are attracted to opposites and people who aren't attracted to opposites...]
