Art programs for Macs

Postby rii namuras » Thu May 11, 2006 2:44 pm

(My family's been looking for a new computer, but now that Mega's intending on getting an Xbox or PS[something] for all his gaming needs, Dad's considering getting a Mac for me for my art, rather than a PC for gaming as orginially planned.)

(My question is: What are some good art programs for say, a iBook or PowerBook? I would like something along the lines of OpenCanvas (which, alas, doesn't work on Macs, otherwise I'd have one already), and definatly not Photoshop. Price isn't a huge deal, as I'd be willing to invest a bit into it, but as always, the cheaper the better.)

Depends on the kind of artwork you're doing, but if you're going to be doing anime-style work, you could try Manga Studio http://www.e-frontier.com/go/mangastudio/datasheet which has a Mac version available. It does color too!

Maybe because while Photoshop is very good and very comprehensive it has a steep learning curve?

(I tried Photoshop after using Elements for some time and then using OpenCanvas longer, and just plain liked OpenCanvas better. Honestly, OpenCanvas does the same stuff, albiet a bit harder to figure out, for $50 rather than $400. Just a personal preference thing.)

(And yes, I'm doing anime, so thanks, I'll check that one out, Anime Dad.)

If you are going to be in school during that time, you might check out whether you can get photoshop at the academic price. It might be a good fit. I know you said you didn't want to use that, but it sort of is the standard.

(Well, Mith, I'm homschooled (and will be in high school for the next three years, not counting this one), so I technically can get academic discounts, but I really dislike Photoshop. And of course, I never am one to use the standard. ;) )

(And glitch, OC works similar to Photoshop, so I'm assuming it's a raster, though I'm not sure because I never heard those words before just now.)

No, OpenCanvas is more similar to Illustrator I thought? I seriously doubt OC has most of Photoshop's features.

(Well, I don't know, because I've never used Illustrator. I might try it out though, if you say it's more like OC.)

Gimp

Postby brandon-chan » Sun May 14, 2006 4:39 pm

hey dudes! I am a huge supporter of open source. mainly becuz its FREE, but they do have a lot of Open Source open for the MAC! U should download GIMP! I love it! its a lil bit different from photoshop but its free! but dude mac has a lot of choices out there for design. they are the number 1 computers for that. I love mine. i also think if u don't want 2 buy photoshop and don't want GIMP then try Elements. I haven't bought any of the new elements becuz they seem to be focused more on Photo Albums but I hav Elements 2.0 and love it. Click Here :thumb:

(I have Elements. I use it for backgrounds and stuff, but it is evil for CGing. The blur tool doesn't work as well as that of OpenCanvas.)

(And by the way, I'd be a dudette. Or whatever.)
