The next questioner raised a major issue, asking if Super Smash Bros. Brawl would support the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. Sakurai said his team would try to take the game online, but he thinks it would be a hard to make four-player online work.

I hope they do online, especially since I've finally got fast internet, but it may not happen.

Wow, they're actually going to be able to top Melee. And using Gamecube controllers was a good decision, I think. It shows that at the very least, they know what kind of games the remote is and isn't good for as well as not rendering the GC controllers obsolete. And yay for Nobuo Uematsu.

Friend codes are bad, but maybe they can get it right this time (*realizes he just wasted his breath*). Btw, where did you find that news? Somebody give me a link to a story about the friend codes (sorry if I missed it elsewhere).

Also, while they're staying hush-hush about the Virtual Console, Nintendo is still demoing it at E3, and it sounds promising. As was mentioned before, the N64 controllers are the hardest to translate to the Wii Retro Controller. Read the story:

Online play was a major highlight of mine for Wii... But friend codes eliminate the whole purpose of online gaming for me.

I hardly even play DS online anymore. It's just a bad online experience.

I don't EVER play Mario Kart online anymore, and as of late, I've been declining on Metroid as well. All because of friend codes.

Am I even going to get a Wii anymore? Most likely, but, At this rate, Wii will be collecting dust along with my Gamecube, PS2, and DS.

Good job, Nintendo, Good job...

The bane of all online gaming... :/

In Counter-Strike: Source, there is a giant online community, full of different people, different kinds of servers, people with different tastes, clans, etc.

and chatting. Both typing and Voice.

That's what brings most of the thrill to online gaming. I love interacting with others as I play.

Ever play MKDS online? Worst online experience ever.

The friend codes restrict ALL of the above, and only let you randomly connect with other players, depending on your stats, or player rank.

No chatting, no servers, no clans, no NOTHING.

Just play against others with a big of lagging and noclip.

I didn't even get to the waiting 10 minutes just to find ONE person to go against.

Getting a 4 person game is VERY rare.

Now, if you're lucky enough to live in a place, where all of your friends have DS's, the same game, and have a fast internet connection, then friend codes don't affect you as much (not saying they won't at all, just not as much), as they let you chat with the friend codes you register in your game, but, if you're like me, being the only kid within a mile with a DS, then your online play will be basically dead.

I've never heard of friend codes (or the fact that DS was online) but I'm guessing friend codes are codes you have to enter to play with your friends? So you have to know someones code in order to play with them? I'm just guessing. If I'm right that kind of sucks I guess. That would get annoying.

Doesn't sound like Wii-fi will be as good as xbox live then.

With DS, you're able to have a random match that the DS picks for you.

Even still, it takes forever for it to do so, doesn't find people on your skill level, and hardly ever finds 3 other people for you to play against.

Nintendo Wi-Fi won't come close to XBox Live.

Quoting my post from the Nintendo Forums...

I hate speculating, but in the interview, the interviewee (not sure who it was) only said that it will INCLUDE friend codes, and when he said it was like the DS, it seemed to be in the context, that the interface will be different console to console (like the PS2), NOT that it will only let you speak to people who you've registered, or won't have servers.

I think that this makes perfect sense, now that I've pondered about it for a few minutes. It's a very vague interview. I think that the interviewer should've been a bit more thorough with his questions.

Here's what I mean:

The friend code system, will be just like a friend list, like the one on XBox Live, or Steam. So, it may tell you when they're online, and you may be able to challenge them individually, instead of finding an empty server for you 2 to play against each other in.

When you don't want to play against the people in your friend list, you can join a server, complete with chat.

I just hope the above is true, and it would make complete sense, if it did!

Plus X-Box Live is way overrated. It's full of pretweens who spam their mics all the time*

*Of course, a lot of younger kids will be playing the Wii as well. But I hope there's no mic or something.

0_0 Great news! Nintendo is awesome! My blood is so pumped right now, you have no idea. Snake is a cool addition, the music is superb (since my family thinks that video games only consist of annoying bleeping noises), and the other characters = d^_^b And I seriously don't mind friend codes. You can just share friend codes online. Yays!

1) Nintendo Wifi Connection is free.

2) Yep. You can tell a lot of the X-Box Live people are immature.

3) For some reason, I doubt it. Wii is a system that should attract many mature non-gamers. That, and younger kids would be turned off by the name "Wii" and call it stupid. They'd probably go for the "cooler" *cough* name like XBOX360 or PS3.

All in all, Nintendo deserves a huge pat on the back.

Nintendo's downloading system for getting old games. Are those priced too? If so, about how much would they be? Any word on that?

Again, Nintendo has said they are keeping pricing details a secret for now (they're paranoid after what happened with Sony, and rightfully so). Interestingly, the "virtual console" aspect was mentioned a few times during Nintendo's press conference, but we were given no details whatsoever about how the download system will work or anything.

I still can't believe Nintendo is going for the freind codes crap again. The idea of having a seperate FL for every game you play is rediculous. Although I will admit it does give it a better level of parental control over who thier children play with.

Sorry I'm a little behind I guess but what happened with Sony as far as pricing?

And I kind of like the Wi-fi thing better than like Xbox online if its free. I'm not a big gamer at all. I like playing with others but I'm not pay 9 bucks a month (or whatever) for something I rarely use. Even if it is just a FL for each game, I don't think I would mind... it sounds like this friends code thing is what's keeping it free which is ok IMO.

And Wii will be the only system I will be getting :D I've been a nintendo fan since the first system and never really much cared for the stuff on PS/PS2/XBox... too serious, too long, too boring... and this wii sounds awesome. Much more interactivity PLUS you can play GC games and I hear you will be able to dl NES/SNES/N64 games which would be worth the price alone (whatever that is) for me

Cant wait....

Sony revealed that the price of the PS3 was going to start at USD $500 and the high-end model at $600, which was met with a lack of enthusiasm. Now, Sony is always having to defend and justify the price.

Rumour has it that the Wii is going to be going for $250.

Microsoft likes the Wii? Well, according to Peter Moore, they do... this is an interesting article:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/05/11/AR2006051100612.html

This had me thinking... you know, while completely unlikely (stranger things have happened though), it'd be interesting to see what would happen if Nintendo and Microft released a bundle at $599 during the PS3 launch. Or maybe a $699 one that'd include Oblivion and Mario Galaxy alongside a few free online downloads. That'd shake things up.
