Mario Galaxy for the Wii

I think this has tons of potential. If Nintendo wants to keep Maio as one of their top games, they need to have a mix of getting back to the basics and being innovative, and I think they may have the right combination here. Mario's main attacks seem to involve jumps rather than strange equipment, but the idea of inter-planetary stuff is a really interesting twist. For once, I am looking forward to a 3D Mario game.

Actually, that thread says threads for specific Wii/Revolution games are allowed, so this one's OK.

I'm personally excited about the direction they're taking the Mario name in these days ~ and that direction is back to its roots. Old-school Mario with some subtle new twists FTW.

Yes. They need that too. But I think it is smart for them to go in this direction first. Once they get people into this new thing they can go back and say, "By the way, we haven't forgotten about you old-schoolers either." *is totally an old-schooler*

I'm looking forward to more platforming mechanics (i.e., difficult jumps and obstacle courses) a la Super Mario 64 (Rainbow Ride, anyone?). I think Galaxy will deliver in this aspect, since it's in space and the world seems more broken up. With lots of ledges, you get lots of jumping. The motion controls are an added treat, IMO.

Although I am looking forward to Zelda again, I really hope that the Wii launches with Mario Galaxy, or that it at least comes out before the year ends.

It looks sweet. Ultra gravity 3D = 10/10. My only concern for a game like this is if there are some stars that you need to obtain that require you to find 100 coins, find hidden blue coins, etc. I despise collect-a-thons. And 3D Mario games are known for that. -_-;

I love how Super Mario Galaxy looks. It's the first 3d mario game that looks like something I would love to play! Mario 64 was okay, but it didn't give enough reason to get one, but this looks right up my alley (like most other Nintendo consoles).

Really, that doesn't seem like something Nintendo would release at all.

Think about it. It goes against their message with the Wii.

Graphics over gameplay. Not to mention, I, myself, don't see why something like this is needed.

If the 2d sidescrollers of Mario are already good enough, and they can be just as creative as they would with a 3d mario side-scroller, why would they make one? the graphics? Doesn't sound like Nintendo to me.

Now, they could make one for Wii that uses the Wii controller in different innovative ways, but I just don't see how that could match how fun Mario Galaxy looks. To me, it seems like 3d space gives Nintendo more freedom with the Wii controller, which sounds more like the reason Nintendo created Wii in the first place.

They could release one on DS, too, but that comes to the same problem. They can make a 2d Mario side-scroller, and still use the innovative capabilites of the DS's touch screen...

So, I ask, why exactly do you think Nintendo should release a 3d Mario Side-scroller. I'm just a bit curious, is all.
had enough.

Wait . . . wasn't New Super Mario Bros. a 3D side-scroller? I thought it was, but it wouldn't be the first time I've been wrong . . .

Actually, it is. I've seen footage, but it looks like a 2d side-scroller, as the graphics look very flat in the actual side-scrolling footage.

I think it would've been better in 2D, but, if it's what you'll buy, then... tch, whatever. I just don't see the reason for one is all, when, I think, the game could've been higher quality in 2D, really.

They must've had alot of requests for a 3d side-scroller...? I guess they have their reasons, as it absolutely couldn't have been for graphics. They're waaay too flat and clunky.

I really think it should've been made with 2d sprites. everything would've been much more crisp, and Nintendo's great at making 2D mario games.

EDIT: Really, it's half 3d! Alot of the 2d side-scrolling levels are in 2d, but some of the moving things are 3d.
had enough.

I must say I agree with you there. Considering the graphics look (from my notoriously irreputable memory) N64-esque, some fancy sprites would have rocked a lot harder than low-polygon 3D. But whatever.

I think everyone has overlooked Super Paper Mario for the GC. It's a hybrid 2D-3D sidescroller with Paper Mario styled graphics.

Unfortunately, most people are overlooking that game.

And I think some people are confused about the whole "3D sidescroller" thing. A sidescroller, by definition, is a 2D game, played left-to-right and right-to-left. A "3D sidescroller" would be a game like the New Super Mario Bros., where the characters and the environment are rendered in 3D, but gameplay still rests on a 2D plane. I imagine this is similar to the 2-1/2D sidescroller, in which there is traditional 2D sidescrolling, but the background and foreground can be interacted with, or the environment causes things to happen to the characters on the 2D playing field. In this case, think the stage in Yoshi's Island when the chain chomps fly from the background to crash into the ground in front of Yoshi and Baby Mario.

Now that we have established this, then yes, Nintendo is making 2 Mario "3D" sidescrollers this year: New Super Mario Bros. for the DS and Super Paper Mario for the GC.

How long has it been since I have really enjoyed a traditional Mario game? Mario 64, I believe. I'm excepting the RPGs from that, because I actually have enjoyed those. Paper Mario was very fun for some reason, and the fact that leveling was of limited value made strategy (and a limited amount of skill) more important.

Personally, I don't like the term "3-D sidescroller." Those two don't go together in my mind. But if they want to make 2-D games with better graphics, I won't really complain.

Indeed, the term is an oxymoron. But using it in the context I (and others) have helps in differentiating the various terms we are throwing around (i.e., 2D, 2-1/2D, etc.).

I don't know about this one... It just looks... weird... I liked Mario 64, and this seems a LITTLE bit like that, but the whole thing of the little planets seems... Well, I won't judge it until it gets here... I can't judge from what little we've seen if it's going to live up to mario 64, or live up to the 7 sidescollers that came before it...

New Super Mario Brothers, on the other hand... That looks pretty stinking sweet.
