Moving back to Asia + Job search

Postby Mave » Tue Mar 28, 2006 5:57 am

Some of you are already aware of my plans in the next few months: I'll be relocating back to Asia after completing my education in the U.S. and being in Michigan for 5-6 years. I'll be leaving the country early/mid July. For such reasons, my activity online has dwindled and probably will stay that way until I've settled down somewhere.

I've been busy with preparations to make this big transition home. While packing/shipping/selling my stuff has been going pretty smoothly, I've been slightly distressed by two things: 1) Flight reservations home 2) Job search

1) I'm not sure why but the travel agent whom my friends recommended seems to be playing games with me or at least, ignoring me. She tells me she'll call me back or send me emails of the itinerary and it never happens. It's been 3 weeks now of talking and waiting, and NOTHING substantial has materialized. Ugh, I'm getting fed up and will most likely start calling other travel agents. I would like a decent and budget friendly flight home.

2) My career of choice is pretty specialized and is hardly an established major in the Asia region. So, my job opportunities are pretty hard to come by back home.

Last week, I had a phone interview for a job opening in Singapore and I have to say I fumbled it, mostly due to my inexperience in interviewing for positions in this field and the lack of a job description. I'm still bummed out by this interview. *cries*

This morning, I saw a new job ad posting that described this exact position and couldn't help feeling even more bummed out. "Why didn't the hiring person provide this job description to me before the interview? It's not fair." I believed I would have been better prepared if I knew what they were looking for. *sniff*

But mah mah...frustrations aside, I have to make a conscious effort to remember that God is the one in control. If He wants me to move to Singapore and pursue this career, it will happen. My self-esteem is pretty low at this point and I need to draw my confidence from my Lord and not based on my personal capabilities. If I want to do well in my career, I must do it for His Glory and on His Behalf.

Pls pray for an answer regarding this job search and a good flight reservation! Also pls pray that my confidence from God will be restored and His love/wisdom will strengthen and guide me as I transition into a new location, culture, and lifestyle. Thanks!

Wow Mave... these are big transitions. I pray that God will guide you clearly the way He wants you to go, jobwise and otherwise, and that you find a decent and affordable (and safe!) flight home.

I hope you have the best of luck, and that you really settle in well when you get there.
The scientific method," Thomas Henry Huxley once wrote, "is nothing but the normal working of the human mind." That is to say, when the mind is working; that is to say further, when it is engaged in corrrecting its mistakes. Taking this point of view, we may conclude that science is not physics, biology, or chemistry—is not even a "subject"—but a moral imperative drawn from a larger narrative whose purpose is to give perspective, balance, and humility to learning.

Aw, that's some really tough stuff to be dealing with, especially at the same time.

I pray that the rest of your transition will go smoothly, from buying tickets to finding a new job to getting and moving into your new abode.

Thanks everyone. I truly need your assistance. My desperation to find a job is mostly due to my human nature's reaction towards a rejection or disapproval. <-- Long story there, but I assure you that I have a lot to learn from a spiritual standpoint.

Why Singapore?
- There are many flavor companies that can use my academic background and work experience. I truly enjoy what I'm doing in my daytime job and would like to continue in the same field of work
- It's nearer to home, than the U.S. Much nearer. I want to near home, lest anything happens to my family and friends (i.e. medical health, brother's .....potential wedding)
- Earning power is generally better there......or at least, that's what I've assumed for now
- More freedom there than I would have here (in an immigration sense, I guess)
- There's always the internet to keep in touch with you guys so that isn't a problem at all

But once again, these are my justifications. I cannot say that Singapore is the exact location that God has intended. However, what I do know is I have to leave where I am now in order to move on with life.

I will be more than happy to keep everyone updated. Thanks once again!

*Bump*

I have a 2nd job followup interview scheduled this Wed so pls pray that I'll do my best by the wisdom and grace of God. I'm partially nervous because I don't know where I really fall in the sense of qualifications. But I must trust that God will always lead me to what's best for me so I will make a conscious effort not to speculate too much.

If I may also ask, pls pray about my future prospects career and relationship-wise. I -truly- need direction in that. Thanks!

I'll pray for you, Mave! I hope God will resolve your situation soon so you can have peace of mind about it.
Be Thou my Vision, O Lord of my heart;
Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art
Thou my best Thought, by day or by night,
Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light.

Be Thou my Wisdom, and Thou my true Word;
I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord;
Thou my great Father, I Thy true son;
Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one.

Be Thou my battle Shield, Sword for the fight;
Be Thou my Dignity, Thou my Delight;
Thou my soul’s Shelter, Thou my high Tower:
Raise Thou me heavenward, O Power of my power.

Riches I heed not, nor man’s empty praise,
Thou mine Inheritance, now and always:
Thou and Thou only, first in my heart,
High King of Heaven, my Treasure Thou art.

High King of Heaven, my victory won,
May I reach Heaven’s joys, O bright Heaven’s Sun!
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,
Still be my Vision, O Ruler of all.

Interesting, I'm actually applying for jobs right now as well. Mine are just part-time for money, however, not related to my theoretical career. My personal issues aren't as serious as yours either.

Anyway, that's just random information. The real purpose of this post is to say I'll be praying for you in all of this.

Update :)

Postby Mave » Thu May 11, 2006 4:09 pm

Hey everyone,

I have some news. The interview went well and I'm being asked for a 3rd interview now at the headquarters of the company this time to interview with the global director of the program! :eh: Golly, what a meticulous hiring process but I really really like the job description, the more I hear it. Anyway, yours truly will be travelling to a neighbouring state somewhere early June. :) Thanks so much for prayers; I'll be back when it's time for the next round.

I also have a quick praise to share. I was going to have the phone interview at home (since the phone call is scheduled at 10 p.m. - overseas call) but luckily, my friend called me and I realized how crappy the reception was due to severe storms we were having then. I quickly decided to drive to my office where the reception was FAR better. Can you imagine how awful it would have been if my friend didn't call me and I realized that I was getting a lousy reception during the phone interview? It could have costed me quite a bit so....praise God!

Good luck in your job search too, UC!

Wow, Praise God. Thats great Mave. Im really excited for you and will keep praying that everything goes well for the third interveiw. ^_^
Depend on it. God's work done in God's way will never lack God's supply. He is too wise a God to frustrate His purposes for lack of funds, and He can just as easily supply them ahead of time as afterwards, and He much prefers doing so.
- J. Hudson Taylor
I remember that one fateful day when Coach took me aside. I knew what was coming. "You don't have to tell me," I said. "I'm off the team, aren't I?" "Well," said Coach, "you never were really ON the team. You made that uniform you're wearing out of rags and towels, and your helmet is a toy space helmet. You show up at practice and then either steal the ball and make us chase you to get it back, or you try to tackle people at inappropriate times." It was all true what he was saying. And yet, I thought something is brewing inside the head of this Coach. He sees something in me, some kind of raw talent that he can mold. But that's when I felt the handcuffs go on.

Update Again

Postby Mave » Wed Jul 26, 2006 8:03 pm

Pardon my inactivity on CAA but I must request prayers in this continuous matter. Thank you to all of you who have prayed for me right from the beginning.

Update: I have left the U.S. and have been situated in Asia for 1-2 weeks now. My job search continues and I'm currently up for a 4th interview in a flavor company in Singapore tomorrow, July 28th. I will meet with 8 people throughout the day with some intimidating sounding job titles so pls pray that I'll always remember that God is bigger than anything of this world and there is nothing for me to be fearful of. :)

I'm pretty excited about this job position as it will be very relevant to what I've been trained for and educated in. The company is one of the best within its profession and I know that I will have many opportunities to grow career-wise and vice versa, opportunities for me to bless them as well.

I will leave for Singapore this afternoon and will return after the interview is completed. Thanks, everyone!

Looking forward to coming back active soon!
