slashes and apostrophes opening the find box in firefox

Postby Bobtheduck » Tue May 02, 2006 8:42 pm

I am using firefox, and every once and a while, when I am typing in text boxes, the slash key and the apostrophe key open the find box, taking me completely out of the text entry box... It is getting very annoying... I can*t adjust to it very quickly, and it disrupts my train of thought... Is there anything that could be causing this? It is rather random when it happens, and it is happenign now... It happened in the chat, and it happens on myspace all the time... I*m starting to lose faith in firefox... I*m sorry, but this is an annoyance too harsh to take...

I have never encountered this at all using it. Have you tried reinstalling it?

I've been recently getting this as well...

It's always random and always happens when I least expect it to...

I don't know how to get it to stop...

By golly! I just tested it now! It does happen!

Could of been with the new update maybe? It only happens to me outside any textbox. Pressing either "'" or "/" once brings me to the Find thing.

Well, it always happens outside a text box, but randomly inside as well, which is where it's annoying (who cares about that if it's outside?) but I got intot he firefox control panel (that about:somethingratehr) and altered a setting, per the instructions of some website, and haven't run across it again yet, but It only happened every once and a while, anyhow... I don't know if the problem is completely gone yet

Opera has long used the slash to open up the inline find, and I have never had a problem with it. Perhaps the issue is that you are settling for second best in your browser choice?

I think he's implying that it's time to make the switch to Opera.

Um... I understand that, but... Still isn't necissary or relevent (more like an advertisement)

Ah, I did get it to work, but it only happens for me if I hit those keys when there is no text box at all (that is when I am looking at something in Firefox but not trying to type). It seems like nothing that will bother me, since I had to actively try this to make it work and has never come up before. (No need to type unless there is a textbox anyway)

//// In the textbox, I can hit these keys all I want and it has no effect.

(Using 1.5.0.3 btw)

OK. A little bit of computer history might be in order. If you use vi (one of the most popular editors in the unix world) you would use / to bring up the search function. Firefox is extending that. The reason the / in a text box is bringing up the find box is because it has actually changed focus to the rest of the document. Pressing escape should quickly return you to your previous location, though. I have to say, I've never had this "accidentally" pop-up. Have you had it happen in the recent version (released today?)

i accidentally posted my reply in the wrong thread, so here it is in the correct thread:

Try using the keyconfig plugin and find the shortcut and delete it.

(that could be wrong, i can't remember since it was a long time ago, tell me if it works)
