I'm not touching the actual subject, other than to say that
1) I don't really care, and
2) it was funny how Advent Children stepped really lightly to avoid fan rage.

I'm not sure if Mithrandir's guide covers this in far more detail, but here's the short version. There are invisible variables that are your "relationship levels" with different characters. These go up or down based on certain decisions that you make. For example, when you fall into the sewers, going up to Tifa first raises her number and the same applies to Aeris.

When you reach the Golden Saucer, the person who goes with you is the one with the highest number. The possibilities are Aeris, Tifa, Yuffie, and Barret. Aeris starts with the highest number, Barret with the least (and it is more difficult to raise his as well).

I`m not exactly that much of an FF7 wiseman. Kaemmerite is more smart storyline-wise when it comes to FF7.

Aeris accepted Cloud because Cloud acted like Zack. Zack was Aeris' boyfriend. She had found someone almost exactly like him, so of course she was attracted to him. I also think you got it backwards. I never saw any indication that Aeris knew Cloud was messed up...at first. After travelling with him for a while, she found out he was messed up, but originally she had no idea. Tifa KNEW Cloud was messed up. She found him outside Midgar not even capable of speaking intelligently, and then she noticed he said odd things and the whole knew things/didn't know things bit. So Tifa was aware from the start that Cloud was really messed up, Aeris didn't know until later.

Aeris was also unsure of her feelings for Cloud. Remember the date at the Gold Saucer. Aeris said, "I want to meet you Cloud." Cloud responded, "I'm right here." Aeris replied, "I know, I know, but...what I'm saying is...I want to meet...YOU." Aeris knew Cloud wasn't himself. He was, in essence, Zack. Aeris was curious to meet the person who really was Cloud. But since she didn't know who he was, she didn't really love him.

And Tifa didn't chase after Cloud? How about the night that Cloud and Tifa spent together before the Northern Cave? Where Tifa was really embarassed that the others might have seen what they did. I call that a pretty straightforward move.

And last, but not least, Aeris can dress properly.

Okay. I'll give you that one. XD;; But Tifa did dress properly in Advent Children.

Ok I'll admit it was abou 3 years ago that I played FFVII! But I still love the game so I'm replaying it through again. But I forgot some stuff. Remind me what happened?!

Ah. Well, it's right after you beat Hojo. Cloud tells everyone to find their own reasons to fight, and that if they didn't want to come back, that was fine. Tifa stays with Cloud, because she has nowhere else to go, and because Cloud is her reason. The game shows them underneath the stars, and then the following morning Tifa is snuggled up close to Cloud.

Cloud: ............It's almost dawn...

Tifa: H, huh...?

Cloud: Sorry. Did I wake you...? It's almost dawn, Tifa.

Tifa: Umm... G, good morning... Cloud. Give me a little longer... Just a little
bit longer... This day will never come again... So let me have this moment...

Cloud: Yeah... okay. This is probably the last time we'll have together......

Later, on the airship, this is the part that implies the...stuff...Cloud and Tifa did during that night:

Tifa: The airship is too big for just the two of us. Yeah, it's a little lonely
without everyone.

Cloud: Don't worry. It'll be okay. I'll make a big enough ruckus for everyone.
Besides, I'm the pilot. No more flying around casually like before. We won't
have time to feel lonely.

Tifa: Huh!?

Cloud: It's moving...... Barret! Cid!

Barret: O, oh......is that okay with you?

Cloud: Red XIII!

Tifa: Why didn't you tell me!?

Red XIII: But, you know, Cid.

Cid: Hey, Red XIII. If you butt in now, you never know what they'll say
later......

Tifa: ......Were you watching? *At this point Tifa sinks to the floor and covers her face*

Well, a couple of the large faqs on Gamefaqs (over 1000K in size) have the character bios straight from the book. Just saying, if you want you can look there.

About as I think about the whole Aeries/Tifa thing, the way I think about it both game wise and Advent Children, is the Aeries and Cloud had a special bond... not necessarily a lovey g/f / b/f one, but more... deeper, you know? Like with the whole Gold Saucer thing and her wanting to know "the real Cloud" and all.... guess if you get a different character for that part it would've been different though^^ Still, I mean after

Whereas he and Tifa have more of a history and stuff.

I`m just gonna break the trend and say that Cloud belongs alone.

He had to sort of decide between an angel and a mortal the way I see it. Live the life of a spiritual figure or just a normal everyday guy.

I called Aeris an angel because she is basically like a holy being being the Ancient she was and was NOT a normal person. Tifa was just an average civillian.

So the way I see it, the girl he chose, was the person he would become.

Which is why if he chose neither, he would be a loner which matches his personality.

Further thoughts on the subject: I think the game itself seems to pair Cloud and Tifa, but this question ignores that. Though I have to say I like Tifa a lot better in Advent Children than I did in the game, whereas Aeris feels roughly the same to me.

Basically, I mean this: the creators of FFVII know that there are huge numbers of people who will insist on Cloud/Aeris or Cloud/Tifa, and generally hate the other group. If in Advent Children they had done something that made Cloud clearly more attached to one of them (like being married to Tifa, for example) one group of fans would have been up in arms. So they were very careful to never say anything one way or the other, having Tifa and Aeris both appear in different ways but never clearly defining Cloud's feelings.

Does that make any sense? I didn't think so.

But on the flip side, I don't really see much of a future for CloudxTifa either. It's always possible, but somehow I see Cloud either staying a loner or meeting someone else in the future. The pairing just never seemed to click with me.
