Strange internet problems

hmm... THis is strange. I'm trying to get to the internet from my room, but I can't. Firefox can't find Google, MSNmessenger can't connect to services, etc. Funny thing is that I can still access my house's network from there, and very easily at that. I can get to my router's settings, I can broadcast a shoutcast server (but only to those on the network... doesn't make it to the internet), etc. And I'm posting this from another computer on the same network, which is recieving its feed from the same WLAN.

I'm kinda confused as to how the internet could go from working to not working without anyone touching my computer, while the network remains in good health and the internet can be accessed elsewhere. Any hints as to why this is happening?

PS, I've already tried rebooting my computer and power cycling the router and modem. None of these helped.

perhaps your DNS server is down? Also, is the network is encrypted?

I am not sure on any of these things... If the DNS server was down, then wouldn't that mean that all of the computers on the network couldn't access the net?

Again, I don't think it's a network problem. Right now, there is music streaming from my computer upstairs to the one I'm at, all on the same network

But still, how do I check those things?

Check the DNS settings on your computer. Make sure the one that's NOT working has the same entry in the DNS field that the ones which DO work.


I can't tell you how to do it unless I know what kind of computer you have, though. If I had to stab at it, I'd say:

1. Right click on Network neighborhood.
2. Select Properties.
3. Check the TCP/IP properties.

If you don't have a network neighborhood, try going to your control panel and then to networks.

When my DNS was down, I was able to log into the AIM/YIM/MSNMSGR server, but couldn't open my browser.

If possible, try changing your DNS server.

suddenly I realized what you guys were talking about and how I set the computer to obtain DNS addresses manually. I swapped it to Automatic and it started working again!
