First Revolution screens revealed: Red Steel

Have a video game or or VG review? This is the place to to discuss it! We also accept discussions of board games and the like, but SHHH! Don't tell anyone, OK?

Well, Red Steel looks like many American fanboys' dream come true: using a katana and a selection of guns to save your Japanese girlfriend . . . XD . . .

Of course, I will likely be getting it. : : innocent look : :

From what I hear, due to the legal issues surrounding the Dualshock technology, Sony is completely redesigning the controller, so it probably won't be a boomerang. I wish I could find a reference for that, but I did read it somewhere (though whether it was official or just speculation, I'm not sure).

People can judge whatever they want. Nothing's going to stop them, man. I've always been a Nintendo guy, but after the GC crapped out I pretty much went for Sony, and when comparing the two consoles, the Revolution and PS3, I have to go for the PS3. Yeah, the Revolution controller is kinda cool, but the Virtua Boy looked kinda cool. At first.

Who doesn't look like an idiot using this thing?

It's all in fun people. Don't get all freaked out just because someone wants to make a judgement or disagrees. I think all of the big three are prety idiotic in their own, unique ways.

Heck, I probably won't get a PS2 until many years after it's come out. Aside from KH2, I've not been into videogames lately.

People learn from their mistakes. We'll just have to wait and see where things go (and I actually find that Revo "diagram" to make perfect sense [except perhaps moving it back to reload :p ]).

I don't know. I just hope I can use a regular Gamecube controller for Metroid Prime 3 instead of that remote thing. I want to actually PLAY Metroid Prime 3. I don't want to pass over it like I did with Hunters because the control system sucks. ><

This will probably be either Nintendo's biggest breakthrough or Nintendo's biggest downfall. This new idea of a controller has never been tried before, and we can only wait and see what happens. Of course, I will though, bet my bottom dollar on Nintendo because so far they have been able to give the fun and entertainment all of its customers have asked for.

Oh yeah, as for Red Steel, nice graphics.

Watch out Mytoi, your fanboy is showing. ;) Opinions, we all have them Bubba. Did I tell you not to buy a Revo? No. I poked at the controller. Which is very lame. If you were being honost you would admit it too. I love the PS3, but there boomarang controller looked retarded as well. Leave controllers be.

I really doubt it. Most developers are going to try to use the revo's controller as a special feature so, you will probably need the revo controller for something. Most likely for the aiming and shooting.

You haven't even tried the controller yet, so please reserve your judgements. :P And I would welcome a control change for MP3. I can't stand the single control stick movements for first person games. At the very least I would like an option for a third person perspective.

Also, I'd be willing to bet that nintendo will be forcing the controller down our throats during the first year or so after Revolution launches. Which would mean MP would ONLY use the free hand controller.

DragonSlayer wrote:I know if either ps3 or xbox360 tried to innovate it would crumble to pecise cause they really just know how to copy stuff.

Try xbox live. That was a stroke of genious. A new, easy way to game online. Who would have thought? Certainly not nintendo. I'm sure there are others, but that is the most obvious example.

Uh, no. Nintendo does not hold the same position they did back in their glory days.

they did invent the modern day controller,

Yes, I think we all know that.

AFter supernintendo psone just made a modified copy, and then xbox copied them with a modifed ps2 controller,

And if we use that logic, Nintendo was just copying Atari by making a videogame console.

anyway, I know if either ps3 or xbox360 tried to innovate it would crumble to pecise cause they really just know how to copy stuff.

You know that? Xbox Live was pretty innovative if you ask me, and Sony making a console that doubles as a DVD player? Rad.

I'm with Josh here, guys. The controller has the potential to be good. But it also has the potential to really suck. Considering Nintendo's other innovations (the Power Glove, Virtual Boy, GC/GBA Connectivity) I don't think he or I are being unreasonable here. When a company known for wacky innovations that don't do well on the market shows their newest gimmick, it's only natural for people to say, "Their last few things didn't do so hot, this doesn't look to be any different."

Yes, Nintendo used to be the king. You act like Nintendo can't fail because they USED to be number one. Newsflash, guys: ATARI used to be number one. And when was the last time you saw an Atari system? Yeah, they still make games. But their games are hardly bestsellers.

Nintendo has a firm grip on the handheld market, but their console performance has been lacking. This is to their detriment. They were the LAST company to jump on the disc bandwagon. That hurt them. BAD. Ignoring online play in favor of hooking up your GBA to your Gamecube. BAD.

Josh is right. What other company had the idea to make their console a DVD player? That was pretty brilliant if you ask me, and pretty innovative too. Nintendo isn't the only company with good ideas, guys. I don't like Xbox, but I admit Xbox Live was a phenomenal idea, and the graphics of the system are pretty kickin'. And even if Halo is overrated in my mind, it's still insanely popular.

With all that said, do I like the Revolution? Yes. Do I like their controller? Not really. Will it be the first system I buy? Without a doubt. But Nintendo isn't some godlike company incapable of making mistakes or even failing. That's all we're trying to say. Or at least all I'm trying to say. I think Josh is more or less saying the same thing (but without the "I'm buying a Revolution" part).

Hmm, I don't entirely rule out the possiblity of getting one eventually. I honestly haven't been playing much video games at all in the past year, and right now the only two I want are MGS4 and the new Zelda game.

As far as the big three, the PS3 looks most promising to me, but I'm not buying any consoles until I see if they're really worth it.

It may be fun, but it's still not smart to get a console on opening day.

I mean, how can I look forward to the Revolution when all Nintendo has done is show a crazy idea, and a bunch of lofty goals? Where are all the games? One bit of screenshots thus far, and not even a Nintendo first-party game?

I was mad psyched to see all the potential GC games, but so far Nintendo hasn't shown me anything.

Down with the DVD remote, down with the boomerange... Dualshock 2 forever! It is simply a natural evolution of the first really good controller, the super nintendo controler...

And I agree about metroid prime hunters... That left handed control scheme was the LAMEST thing I'd ever seen...

And, once again, MGS4 is going to rock my world. Not an opinion. As for your world, that's left to be determined. ^_^ Chew on that one, hahaha

I would prefer that they revert to the N64 controller style, personally. That thing was so incredibly comfortable, and it's my favorite controller to date. *nodnod*

Oh, you mean like trying to get Resident Evil on the Gamecube? Since I mean, Nintendo cleary made that series.

Ps2 and hopefully 3 also let you still play PS1 games. Can you play your N64 games on your gamecube? Or will you be able to play either on your Revolution? Yeah. Clearly the entire gaming world needs Nintendo to survive. Remind me of this, when Nintendo goes the way of Sega and resorts to making games for Sony and Xbox.

I find the screenshot so so and I say give me a video before I do more then say "hmmm so?" Wait till e3 I bet then if nintendo isnt stupid they will show something then I will pass judgment on the system (i have said many times I hate the controller but if its the cheap system and has the cheap fun games and a normal controller I may buy one later on).

Oh and I know whoever it was that said it looked as good as or better then xbox360 and ps3 graphics was owned I came to this late so it still makes me chuckle with the chuckles of laughing laughfullnes...

Also about people saying "don't knock it till you try it" some people can see something and not like it, I see that I do not like to stick my hands in boiling water even though I have never tried it. Bad example I know but you get my idea, some things people just see and know they are going to hate it.

Lastly I hope that Nintendo will have it not be a requirement to play with that "thing". Honestly I like playing zelda with a normal controller, I like playing smash brothers with a normal controller, and I swear I shall rant for weeks on end if the next installment of naruto ninja taisen (if they bring it to the system) to be used with the remote.

Also last thing, that has my ire raised about the screenshot, why the heck is he shooting that gun sideways like that? Shooting a gun like that unless you are rapid firing or have a full auto pistol sweeping it to the side using the recoil to speed the sweep it has no warrant! I swear I hate this "ghetto" style of shooting and the stupidity it entails.

Never going to happen. We all know Nintendo is *very* stubborn, and they'd never make games for another console. Nintendo would rather go out of business.

Of course, Nintendo probably also thinks they're in first place. Miyamoto throws some mushrooms onto their sales numbers.

If I'm being honest, I think the controller is weird, but I'm still looking forward to it because I'm hoping that Nintendo will use it correctly. I understand that Nintendo hasn't had the best success with innovating in the past, but one can hope.

Actually, I have heard that Nintendo gets the best profits out of the three console making game companies, whethere they were including there profits from the GBA or not I do not know (when I heard this the DS wasn't out yet). Also, I don't think your right about Nintendo never making games for another console. Did anyone ever actually think that SEGA was going to be making games for a Nintendo made console? I honestly don't think Nintendo would simply just die instead of making games for other consoles.

The old addage, if its not broke, don't fix it comes to mind. It's not that I hate Nintendo that causes my hate of the new controller (I will admit that I am not a Nintendo fan though) Its the controller itself. I would be furious if the PS3 were planning on doing it.

Speaking of profits and Nintendo, they are indeed doing very well financially as Peanut mentioned... to be more specific, around $800 million thanks to the Nintendo DS and the value of the Yen being weaker than expected (oversea profits increased)....

http://www.gamespot.com/news/6147056.html

So, I say, Nintendo is here to stay as console maker. However, I do remember Iwata saying that the Revolution is a failure if it doesn't sell better than the 'cube. This means either of two things if the Revolution 'fails', IMO, Nintendo will make another console and completely copy Sony and Microsoft's direction (more power) or if worse comes to worst, they'll just be a handheld company and be very rich.

Anyways, about the screenies, I'm not really that surprised by the "flash' of the graphics. This is from Ubisoft and remember King Kong (on the regular consoles) or that "polished" teaser for Ghost Recon on the X360?

Now, what really got my attention, after looking at all the screens, was it seems you can tilt the character's wrist while holding a gun. That’s kinda’ spiffy.

Ark, how was my statement "fanboyism?" You didn't state anything that gave a good reason as to why you thought the controller was bad. You just flat out flamed it.

Oh, you mean like trying to get Resident Evil on the Gamecube? Since I mean, Nintendo cleary made that series.

Why do people "blame" Nintendo for this stuff? Capcom is the one porting everything over to the other systems. Konami ported DDR over to the GC, and they may have been the ones to choose to include Mario in it, not Nintendo (I don't know for this sure, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was Konami who chose that).

Darn it,they removed the screenshots! :comp:

And I think a smart move for Nintendo to make is have devopers make two controls schmes in each game:One for the new controller, one for the shell.

May not be a big idea, but that's my opinion.

Why Ark, exactly, do you hate it? It's obvious you don't like it, but why? This:

"The old addage, if its not broke, don't fix it comes to mind. "

still doesn't explain exactly why you hate it. They're trying new things, and you already give up on it?

When I first saw previews for One Piece, I hated the whole idea. I mean, passionately hated it. Then I watched it, thought "This is pretty interesting," and the rest is history.

Now (as I've become a bit less "naive" in my outlooks), I prefer to look first at what might be good about things, while still being reasonable. Yes, the Revo could fail horribly, but it could also succeed. We don't know yet.

If you're being cautious, fine. I understand that. But instead you ran in here and shot it down without good reason.

"They've had some mistakes in the past, so I'm not sure if this will work out," compared to "That is just lame."

And just wondering, but what exactly would you say if they came out with Metal Gear for the Revolution, using this "lame" controller?

i think that the controller will be interesting. My laptop basically overpowers game systems anyway, so the only reason i'd buy a console is if it was somthing unique. Besides that, i'm a hyperactive person who likes to move when he's playing games (ducks when doging in halo, or jumps up when in a mad battle...) so the revo will probably fit in with how i play. i can't wait to swing it as a sword!

Not play it. The new controllers design is just stupid. If I made a wheel for your car out of cheese and said, here its a new idea, use this. You would not need to drive it, to say "Gee thats a pretty lame idea". I thank God Nintendo is the company doing this new controller and not Sony.
