Silent Hill 3

Postby Bobtheduck » Wed Dec 24, 2003 1:12 am

I want to know who played this...

I looked it up in the search, and besides the fact it wouldn't let me look for "Silent Hill 3" because "3" was too short (grr...) I only found a post about SH2...

I rented this game and have been playing it... I am very impressed and mildly disturbed by this game... I have never seen a Horror movie that scared me like this game does, I can't even describe it. That one darkside place that had those pulsating walls really got to me, and the scene with the mannequin (in the mannequin office) made me jump off my seat. I have not played SH1, so I know I'm missing important elements of the story, and I didn't play SH2 very long, but I am very sucked into this game. I am currently up to the Church having played 7 hours and I think it's almost over, but I'm not certain... I must say, any horror fan who hasn't played this game is out of their mind...

So... Yeah, if there are other discussions about this game, then merge them, but I didn't find any...

I have played SH2 and it was pretty disturbing itself. I can't wait to play SH3.

Spoiler

Postby Bobtheduck » Sat Dec 27, 2003 3:13 am

I already beat it, so I've been looking at stuff about it, and i've found many people (primarily non-christians) who call it blasphemous...
I read one thing that said that the names of villains and items in the game were names of real demons and angels talked about in the books of Enoch (one of them was quoted in Jude) and there's a lot of talk referring to the bad guy as "God" (which is the same in Lain, but that doesn't bug me because I've seen the whole thing and have my own interpretation of it) Supposedly, the main villain, samael, is listed in some apocryphal works (not in THE apocrypha) as the chief demon, and mertroton as the chief angel above micheal... I'm not sure about that one, since one of the sources listed was the Kabala, which I put as much faith in as I do that I'll win the lottory 14 times if I buy 2 tickets. But, there's also the (which stood out to me even as I was playing it) apparent refference to abortion (when heather takes the poison to kill Samael) and a few other issues...
What's anyone else think about this? Surprisingly, even THIS didn't bug me as much as End of Evangelion... But, that may be changing the more I learn about it... Still, that transform outfit and the beam saber were both the funniest things I'd seen since before I started playing the game...

Here, read this; http://db.gamefaqs.com/console/psx/file/silent_hill_plot.txt

It helps you to understand Silent Hill.

I might be getting it today, I'm a fan of the series. Is it as creepy as the 2nd?

It's creepier than anything I've ever seen or played, so yeah... Especially witht the things they're able to do with the new graphics engine... The dark world effects really are disturbing... And, then there's Valtiel. By the way, I had been reading that faq and that's the reason I asked in the first place... That has the info about samael and Valtiel and Metreton (even the game is inconsistant in the spelling of that one).

EDIT: Made spelling changes.

That avatar's a bit nasty, Mike... Anyhow, I wrote up what was essentially the whole plot, but it never sent and I lost it... Spent like an hour writing it up, too...

Basically, if I tell you the plot, it will be a spoiler. Heather has all this weird stuff happening to her and she's being tracked down by this detective and strange woman named claudia. Most of the game doesn't even take place in Silent Hill. She's just trying to get back to her appartment, but she keeps slipping out of the normal world into a nightmare world as she makes her way. Who is this heather? Who is the claudia? What does she want with heather? Why does she keep seeing these nightmarish images? That's the non-spoiler version...
Claudia finds heather and tells her to come with her to silent hill and that she's going to awaken "God." Heather's "Father" is a very familiar person. Heather has suppressed a lot of memories. She's a bleached blonde. Those things may hint at it if you've played the first game. She finds things that remind her of her past every time she goes into the nightmare world. She constantly sees gurneys and a wheelchair that seems to show up either in the nightmare world or just before the nightmare world.
then comes the major spoilers, don't read this unless you don't ever plan on playing the game.
"Heather" is a fake name that Harry (the hero of SH1) gives to Alyssa. Alyssa, if you played SH1, is the little girl that is the primary focus of the story. The reason claudia keeps talking about the birth of "God" is because Heather is pregnant with who Claudia calls "God" who is "Samael" the chief demon in the books of Enoch and in the Kabala. Claudia kills Harry to incite heather to return to silent hill, and give birth to Samael's physical manifestation. She goes to the Hospital to find Claudia, and finds all sorts of things about her history and what her adopted father did and who she was. She then finds that Claudia is calling her to the church. She has to go through the theme park, which is the same as her nightmare at the beginning, and Douglas, the detective that has been with her, goes into the park to help her out and to make up for falling for Claudia's trap. He is hurt and is forced to stay while Heather goes to confront Claudia. After more nightmarish ordeals (I'm really giving the severely shortened version, leaving out most of the disturbing stuff) she meets up with Claudia and Claudia summons Samael to be born out of Heather, but she discovers the pendant that Harry gave her was a poison pill which she takes and "aborts" samael, puking up a bloody fetus on the ground. Claudia doesn't go for that, so she eats the fetus and falls below the ground, so she can give birth to him herself. She is no more, and Samael is born. Unlike the rest of the creatures, Samael has a face. Heather fights Samael (a rediculously easy boss battle) and, well, that's it... There are 3 endings (there were more in previous games) so I won't even give those away with a warning, but that's the gist of the game...
ok... What's the disturbing parts?
At the beginning, a simian SH monster is eating a persons face, pulling pieces of it off. You constantly see weird monster with no faces, some looking dead, some looking bloody, some looking like they should be human but they're not. One is a dog that's split in half down the middle and taped back together, and just it's head isn't kept together (actually, this one doesn't bug me) The nastyiest of monsters (because they're just annoying) is this thing called a pendulum and they make a horrible sound that's screeching and nails on a chalkboard and a train... The monsters aren't as much disturbing as they are annoying and a couple of them really gross... The numb bodies grossed me out the first time I saw them, but now I laugh when I see them because they are so rediculous. When Heather goes into the nightmare world, things really get creepy. There's a reoccuring theme of stretchers and wheelchairs, in one bathroom, you knock on the door and get a response, only to enter the stall and find the toilet and walls covered in spattered blood. You consistantly get facts about a mental patient who's obsessed with Heather. Besides Claudia, there are two others important to this demonic cult. One of them, Vincent, is just annoying and mostly there for comedy relief, but he has what is probably the most disturbing line in the game. Heather is talking about how crazy they are, and he tells her how he knows that she gets off on killing the creatures. She says "But they're just monsters" and he gets a funny look and says "Is THAT what you're seeing?" I about lost it at that line... One point, you are in the room with mannequins, all missing their heads but one of them. Heather comments that they creep her out. When you go to check out the other corner of the room, you hear a loud piercing scream, and then a loud pop. Returning to the mannequin, you notice it's without a head and there is blood everywhere... Apparently the mannequin wasn't just a mannequin. That part made me jump... The nightmare world has different things to alter the look of the standard world. One of the common things is bleeding, pulsating walls... That's nasty enough, but one of them has what I call the "Hell Look" that has to be seen to believed or understood. THen, there's the ever popular infested look. The walls have veins with little bugs crawing just underneath the surface. It's not just the walls, but sometimes the monster's normal nasty skin becomes infested or even look like the Hell walls. Heather at one point even becomes infested. Also, at one point, you read about a man who was decapitated after commiting suicide next to the subway. When you visit the site, you hear a screachy breath, and you're pushed onto the tracks... Part of the subway scene requires you to get on the tracks, with the train being sentient knowing when you're there. The train, in heather's nightmarish world, will only come to kill you. Besides the monsters you fight, there are several monsters you don't fight. Apparently they show up in fairy tales. One of them, Vanatiel, is probably the most recognizable monster from the game. He turns valves and shows up whenever Heather transitions from the normal world to the nightmare. He tends to keep humans with him, I think, who dangle their feet below, and it appears that he feeds on them. They look pretty freaky, like they are fading in and out of the world. Besides him, there is also a gate creature. I haven't really figured him out yet, but he can't hurt you and you can't hurt him with weapons. He looks nasty, but he's normal faire after the rest of the game... The creature that will probably send most of you the mental institution is the pendulums i mentioned... I hate those little buggers... They are impossible to hit half the time, with guns or melee weapons, and they sort of encompas the bug phobia and the arachnophoia at the same time... Part of the time looking like mosquitoes, part of the time looking like spiders... The way this game affected me isn't describable in words or writing... It's honestly something that had ot be seen to be understood...Also, the things I've said are a good deal of the distubring things, but not all of them.
Anyhow, that's about all I can say... I left out a lot, but that's most of it... It's just plain freaky. To the point that I'm scared to death of Fog now, and I'll never look at mannequins the same way anymore...

I want to hear the opinions of people who've played through it what you think of the "blasphemy" accusation (brought by non-christians, nonetheless) and based on things that I've said here too...

Well, Silent Hill 2's plot has nothing to do with 3's, but I know 1's pretty well.

Anywho;
Silent Hill is a place where people come and face their worst nightmares. In 2, James comes back to find his wife. Eventually he discovers he killed her. All throughout the game his attacked by monsters, if you look closely enough you see they're all female. And he's been killing them the whole game right? The only enemy who isn't female is the 'Pyramid Head' (he makes the Nemisis from Resident Evil look like a barby). James runs into a women named Maria and she looks just like Mary (James's wife). She's constantly getting killed by the Pyramid Head before James's eyes. It's symbolic of how James killed Maria. James has 4 endings depending on your actions. Every S-hill story has some deeper meaning to the main character. If you get Harry's best ending in the first one, he starts a new life with a new daughter. Almost like he got a second chance. I don't know Heather's character very well, so I can't say what it all meant to her. Maybe you can give it a shot.
Now,
The demons in S-hill are only made to scare and outrage you. There's one scene in 2 in which the Pyramid Head is doing........something to a pair of legs which he kills once James comes in. The nasty demons are the characters themselves. I think they just pulled all those Apocrypha references to feak the player out.
I just got SH1 over Christmas and yes it is indeed extremely creepifyin'. I've been playing it off and on (not because I get bored with it, but because I need at least a full day off to recover from a good long sitdown with that game. And I gotta hit pause once in a while to do things like exhale and change my drawers). Currently i'm in that "alternate" world in the elementary school. Gotta love that music, yeah. Like someone is pounding their fist on a bunch of piano keys:
BONG!
(shikka-shikka)
BONG! BONG!
(shikka-shikka-shikka)
And it just repeats like that. So simple, yet so unnerving.
The SH series is without a doubt the most fun you could have being scared out of your ever-lovin' mind.

Ooh... remember how I said the graphics in SH3 were the best I'd ever seen? The way they accomplished this was by making a new graphics engine and having next to no interactivity in the envirionments... I didn't even notice that little fact until someone told me... Anyhow, SH4 is going even farther... It looks better in every way exept framerate... SH3 had awesome graphics and still had a 60FPS, but SH4 will have better graphics while only having a 30FPS framerate... I don't care about framerate, really, as long as it looks really good otherwise... Also, Metal Gear Solid 3 apparently does the same thing... New Graphics engine and a reduced framerate... Instead of trying to make it look better, though, they used the new power to make it much more interactive... Expect "Snake Eater" to be the single most "play-around-able" game on the PS2 (second only to Half-Life two overall, due to PS2's limitations)

I've been a SH fan ever since the first so finishing SH3 brought back so many good--um--bad--ugh, no, I mean.... well, *familiar* memories

I'm currently finishing it for the 3rd time to get the special Revenge ending (to which I much first unlock the Heather beam which prerequisites state I need to kill 333 monsters -_-;). SH3 has gone a notch up in the shock-and-disturb factor. Ugh, I hate the hospital... the most freaky room in all the SH games must be that storage room in the dark hospital... remember guys? The room with the big mirror? I nearly had a heart attack...

And please don't remind me of the Haunted Mansion in the amusement park.... (I had two psychoteers with me and we all screamed like little girls--wait... we *are* girls...nevermind)

I actually find Valtiel pretty amusing  But yeah, creeps me out...

Has anyone else got the secret weapons and clothes? Or unlocked the bonuses? Lol, the creepiness factor really *really* drops when you play Heather dressed in *beeeeep* and using a *beeeep* while everytime you see Douglas he's wearing only his *beeeeep*.

The fun about SH is the replay factor, I just *have* to unlock everything--the staff have such a wacky sense of humor XD

Regarding the cultist aspect of the game, I wasn't really offended, just sorta mildly uncomfortable anyone would get when listening to cult wackos rant. Most of the names and what not are mostly lifted from the Kabbalah if I remember correctly. Vincent is creepier than Dahlia... anyone think the same?

Now, I gotta go find out the code for spoilers so I can rant about somethings I've been dying to rant about...

Ranting time... only highlight if you finished SH1 and played SH3 at least to the first boss:
I was totally devastated to find out Harry died. He was the first survival horror main character who couldn't shoot straight, crashed into walls, stumbled off stairs and gasped for breath after a block of running... he was normal--and I got attached to him for that. I played SH1 until I couldn't play anymore--getting ALL the endings and weapons plus playing through every difficulty (never could finish nightmare though... even with the Hyper Blaster)... he was like family dang it!

He killed Sammael!! (well, techincally I did... but that's beside the point) To find him lying on the chair in a pool of blood with a hole through his chest was just... just... Arrghh! They killed Harry! when Heather said, "Daddy, you said you were the strongest... liar," I couldn't help but think the same. And when we find the notes Harry left around (the one we used to save in SH1 with) I felt terribly nostalgic.

I fought so hard to keep him alive in SH1.... he's really the first survival horror hero that I've truly grown attached to. James didn't really appeal to me... probably because he wasn't Harry :p Besides, SH2 nearly had no part in the general SH plot so it didn't have that "oooooh!" feel after finishing it.
Sorry about that... I really needed to find SH fans and get that out of my system... *sniff sniff*

[the most freaky room in all the SH games must be that storage room in the dark hospital... remember guys? The room with the big mirror? I nearly had a heart attack...]

You mean the one that fills up with blood while Heather deteriorates in the "mirror-world"? My friend was telling me about that. He said he'd like to know what would happen if he stayed long enough to see the whole thing fill up completely, but he's too afraid to stick around and find out. We were talking about SH1 and he pretty much pegged my greatest freakout moment when he said "Just let me ask you this: did you or did you not crap your pants when you went into that bathroom and heard the child crying?" I tell you, that one still sticks with me. I probably will get SH3 when I'm done with the first one. I've never had so much fun being scared out of my mind.

Spoony : Actually you *will* die if you try to get out and never look into the mirror again. Something about acknowledging the "other" Heather in the mirror. Ah and my interpretation of that room below...
In fact, if you think about it, it's sorta how the boss Memory of Alessa came into place. Eventually the other Heather in the mirror stops eventhough you're running around--symbolizing that she (Alessa's memories) had seperated and now able to become a tangible being. Well... that's my interpretation anyway...
Ugh, I screamed the loudest in the Haunted Mansion. Especially the second room where they unceremoniously dumped the dead guy right in front of me... Mannequin room... the knocking in the toilets... I even jumped when the box fell in the amusement box toy store...

Volt : SH3 actually summed up the whole plot of SH1 into a few nice paragrahs. But really, playing the game without knowing what's going on actually adds to the atmosphere. I would really suggest you dive in totally unaware--like the main character himself ^^

I'm currently finishing it for the 3rd time to get the special Revenge ending (to which I much first unlock the Heather beam which prerequisites state I need to kill 333 monsters -_-]

1. SH3 was the first SH game I completed, and SH2 was the only other one I played. I'm going to get SH1 for my brother and play it myself first (gonna send him my PS1 because he gets very lonely and bored)

2. The Hospital? I personally found the darkside Mannquin Retailer was the freakiest locale, but the Church was pretty bad... The "infested" church really freaked me out... Everytime I went into the sunday school room, and it had that chanting and it sounded like sauron from Lord of the Rings, only like more than one of them and a lot darker...

3. I thought the Haunted Mansion was funny...
Until the hallway at the end... I didn't know it was real again, thought it was part of the joke and... Oh, I hated that room...
4. Valtiel... He was compared to Pyramid head, but Valtiel isn't actually threatening...

5. Replay...
It is a mild thrill to play the game through in the Transform outfit (and, turning it on and off several times too, hehehe) and the beam saber... I mean, sailormoon with a light saber
6. Vincent was THE creepiest aspect of the game... Or, rather, the bearer of the creepiest aspect of ALL the games.
The fact that the monsters might actually be real people that you're killing
7. Spoilers are the square brackets witht the word spoiler in them. Just reply to my message with quotes and look
this is the spoiler
But wait a minute! You already used the spoiler code... What's the deal??

I went to find the spoiler code after posting my first post up there ^^

On Vincent's little slip up...
Yeah, I pretty much had the same reaction as Heather did. The concept *is* sorta addressed more throughly in SH2 since you actually got other people than James who tell you point blank they don't see what you do. Especially Eddie who turns out he's killing real people and yet he sees...? It really gives that twist on your already skewed perception of reality in SH...
The last bit in the infested church was creepy as heck, but it has that "otherworldly" feel so my senses were already a bit numb to really get totally freaked out. When weird and scary stuff happen in dark SH mode, it's more close to *this* reality and somehow that really, really, gets to me. I dunno, it just feels like those things can plausibly happen here and THAT is a really disturbing thought.

Another thing about the Haunted Mansion... doesn't the narrator's voice sound like Vincent? It has that same demented drawl... ugh...
Last room was heart-pounding eh? Just remember to take off the bullet-proof vest if you have it on.
Ooh, and I really think the SH staff overdid themselves on the enviroments. Gah... they got the bloodiest rooms I ever seen in survival horror... and the morgues.... *shiver* How long can you stand in there before getting absolutely creeped out?
Though having on the Sailor Moon outfit really ruined the freakyness, LOL! The beam saber is fun isn't it? It gives that impression that Heather's a Jedi battling alien forces... Personally, I love the God_of_Thunder outfit--it rocks! And it increases your attack and defense! The cockadooodledo outfit also increases the attack but only to the beam saber and flame thrower if I'm not mistaken...
It's not all about blood in SH... Really, it's all about combined phobias...

Everything "Heather" is affraid of, of course is meant to translate into things the audience is affraid of:

Spiders or perhaps mosquitos (depending on whether they are in flight or not: pendulums)
Dogs (double heads)
Monkeys (from her books, and those are the Closers)
Infestation
Blood
Wheelchairs
Mirrors
Featureless monsters (they have no real faces)
Trains
Static
Screaching
Tight Spaces
Being alone
The dark
Fog
Incomplete human beings (most of the monsters except for the dogs and the pendulums)
The evil thing growing inside her (both the numb bodies and the insane cancers
Heights
Hearing something you can't see
Unclear pictures
Being trapped
Suffering

Like you said, there are very few of the Resident Evil type "dog through a window" (got that from a FAQ on http://www.gamefaqs.com) style of scares... Silent Hill is meant to touch something deeper than a cheap surprise... If anything, Silent Hill has much more imagination and much more style, as well as more of a Psychological understanding of it's players than Resident Evil does... RE is much slicker (though SH3 was slicker than the previous games, much to the distaste of fans) and a little too perfect, I suppose, to really scare me... I had no problem with the Resident Evil games... Silent Hill was the first to actually scare me.

I really need to find SH1 and play through it now, as well as rent 2 to beat it...

P.S To Psycho Ann, what did you think of the
Abortion issue... that is something beside the cult issue that is a bit questionable to me...
Probably SH isn't the best game for you then--it has practically got rooms only with blood splatter EVERYWHERE. ^^;;; The thing is, it really really gets to you--not in a cheap horror flick way. More like the "my-brain-has-frizzled-in-shock-of-the-myriad-of-terrifying-and-horrifc-things-that-could-have-resulted-in-this-bloody-mess" way. Then again, SH gives you 3 different settings to which the "run-down, rusty, crusty, musty room" is also available XD

Fatal Frame is unique in it's own right. But maybe being Asian and somewhat raised on Chinese ghost stories and flicks (plus, somewhat confident of the (non)existance of ghosts in regard to Scripture) it doesn't have that "yeeeeee" feel as with RE and SH. Not to mention the battle sequence is quite fun ^^ But dang it, a dead person jumping in front of my lenses is one person too many. This game doesn't NEED blood..... >_<

RE makes you paranoid in front of two-way mirrors, windows, or walking down deserted streets. It also has a plausible cause for all the un-dead lingering about. But still... that's just it. It has a plausible, biological explanation. You got strong main characters to control equiped with wicked weapons (rocket launcher--yeah!) and personally RE1 was the best for me because of the lack of ammunition and the fact you have no idea where the zombies came from. RE still has second place in my fav of survival horror for the sheer ability to make me jump and scream. Getting chased down by Nemesis was sw33t too...

SH... well, SH is just SH. It gets into your head and messes around with what you think you know about the game. Man, you don't even know you're killing what you think you're killing! O_o;; The main characters are regular people (exception of SH3) and you got basically 3 shooting weapons (two of which--usually the shotgun and rifle--have limited ammo you can only spare with bosses) and the rest are short ranged. Oh, and the main characters SUCK in aiming XD Even auto-aim dosen't work unless the monsters are right in view. It adds to the general terror in playing the game though... (what I would give to have the SH heroes able to shoot like Chris Redfield or Leon Kennedy...)

Aside from the ranting, I say it's hard to compare SH to RE or even to FF--they are all so different despite being of the survival horror genre. Different settings, different "dead-people", different degrees and types of creepiness...

Take away gameplay, plot, and graphics... SH is #1 for me in just plain scaring me out of my wits.

(You can tell I'm a VERY avid fan of SH seeing how I'm replying to every other post here ^^;;;)

Bob: Oh that...
I don't really have any qualms about it since techinally Sammael isn't a "baby". It won't be born "innocent" nor will it have a chance to "live" and even get God's grace (if you want me to get deep down on it). It conceived itself in Heather's body with the sole purpose of bringing "paradise" and it does not care one bit that Heather's going to die in the process. It's going to kill its host and then go on to kill others--sounds like a disease to me. Get rid of it--it's more like removing a cancer than getting an abortion. I'm 100% pro-life when it applies to "life" in the first place. XD

Besides, I personally don't think the "thou salt not kill" will apply when a demon is growing inside of you O_o;; And it's not really an "abortion" if you think about it.... See, Heather vomited Sammael--*vomited*, that meant Sammael could not have possibly been in her uterus (unless he can morph around in Heather's body... ew). Then Claudia had to go and do that disturbing/disgusting scene which also proves Sammael can be "birthed" eventhough swallowed orally.

If he's not exactly there in Heather's uterus... would it still be considered an abortion? Wouldn't it make more sense if Sammael the Fetus was more like an evil-demonic-tape-worm? Lets leave those questions to the experts ;P
ok... off that topic...
What'd you think of the raspy invisible child thing? It was similar to the bathroom, in that it seemed like merely an echo... The bathroom one was gross to me... I mean, I expected something to be off, but that part really did grossed me out... The invisible raspy little girl (well, child anyhow) is confusing, though... Is that supposed to be Heather/alyssa/cheryl?
Location of Silent Hill

Postby Bobtheduck » Mon Jan 12, 2004 3:07 pm

I only remember Portland being mentioned now (portland is where Heather Lives) and the only portland I know of is in Oregon, so I'm guessing that Silent Hill is in Northern California, or perhaps in Oregon itself? There were other things that made me think California, but I forgot what they were... Any ideas?

Silent Hill is a real city I think (many people said this when SH1 came out)--but oddly enough I can't seem to find it... ^^;

As for that other thing...
From the voice and foot-prints it makes more sense that it's Cheryl/Young-Alessa. Young Alessa probably, knowing that the kid Cheryl in SH1 didn't really have the time to have a reason to weep and leavy bloody footprints while showing you the way. Interesting concept though, since essentially Cheryl, Alessa, and Heather are all one person and so the disembodied being seperate from Heather would be...? Maybe is all just in Heather's head, memories of her past life coming back (more specific, memories of the *suffering* in her past life). I do think that it's there just to freak us out... XD
I agree whole-heartedly. The Fatal Frame series has become my favorite franchise on the ps2 now. The games manage to scare WITHOUT using the blood, gore, and violence in Silent Hill or Resident Evil. I think it's the absence of a physical weapon combined with the incredible ambient sounds that make this game actually scary.
