Metroid Prime isn't an FPS. Nintendo said so themselves. They refer to it as a 'first-person adventure.'

Yeah and Sega called Shenmue a Free Roaming Talking Fighting Adventure game or something but a game is a game.:P Nintendo can call it whatever they want but the basic mechanics pretty much make it a FPS.

Only because it's in first person with a gun

I too classify Metroid Prime as a "First Person Adventure" because The auto-aim by holding L. Makes shooting much easier. Notice the game also focuses tremendously on acrobatics. It's essentially a 3D platformer (with a gun)

But they made the game...they can call it whatever the heck they want.

Ok so if I invented kettle corn, which is basically popcorn, but decided to call it porkrines does that make it not popcorn?:P

I have to roll my eyes everytime someone tries to invent a name for a new genre of music, movie, videogame. I don't care if they want to call it Acid Electronica Jazz, A Techno Suspense Thriller, or a First Person Adventure just stick with the names that work. It's only marketing anyway.

True it "shoots" and stuff, but it doesn't have the mechanics that most other First Person Shooters have.

By saying this, it seems as though you are implying that *any* game that features a gun and a first person perspective is a first-person shooter. By this logic, Metal Gear Solid 2, MGS 3, and the original MGS featured in Twin Snakes have all become FPS games, because they feature a gun, and you can fire in first-person perspective. You're also roping in every GTA game since 3, seeing as there is always at least one weapon in each of those games that can only be fired through first person perspecitve. I'm not much of an FPS fan, but I really don't think that MGS and GTA are first-person shooters. And as Mr. SmartyPants has been saying, Metroid Prime doesn't fall under this genre either because Prime features different mechanics than other FPS games.

Master Chief. Halo and Halo 2 were the only FPS games that I'd touch, so I think that's saying something.

I find it odd that no one has yet mentioned either Templar, Luger, Rico, or Hakha from Killzone... so I'll mention one of them. I vote Hakha of Killzone because he has an English accent, is a half-breed of the game's enemy, is a spy, and pretty freakin' smart. Plus, he's always taking intellectual shots at the big guy, Rico. Good guy... good game... ^^

I like Gordon Freeman and all I have half-life 2 but a scientist with a gun? No offense but that's (in my opinion) kind of lame. My vote is for Master Chief!!!! I'm a hard core halo fan and I mean that armor is so 1337!

Here's more:
-Must have one weapon that doesn't need reloading (Doom: Chainsaw, bare hands. Wolfenstein/Spear of Destiny: knife. Half-life: Crowbar)
-Must have at least one monster-like enemy. Even Wolfenstein had mutants in it.

That's just good play mechanics to have a weak weapon that doesn't need to be reloaded like a knife or recharging pistol.

Guess you can count out Call of Duty, Battlefield, Rainbow Six, and other realistic FPS's.:P

I think I shall go ahead and define it here since I made the poll.

An FPS is a game in which the vast majority if not all of the game is played in first-person perspective and in which the majority of the gameplay involves the use of some manner of projectile weapon to fight.

Metroid Prime does (the morph ball parts are secondary), therefore, it is an FPS/Adventure game.

I voted other. Samus Aran. Yes I read through the thread and saw the argument over whether it's an FPS or not, and to tell you the truth, I really don't care what you call it. I'm in First person the majority of the time and I shoot stuff. The fact that it doesn't operate like other FPSs is beside the point.

Samus gets my vote.
