Thanks for the rundown on the differences and new features of Oblivion, Yojimbo! I'm starting to get a better idea about why so many people are very excited. From what you've said I'm getting quite a bit more excited too!

Puritan wrote:Guards will follow you if you run into a house to try to escape them, shopkeepers actually follow you around if you wander out of their sight in a shop, creatures gage threats and act accordingly, and people actually do things in a random but believable pattern rather than simply taking a pre-set route and being in the same place every time you go into town.
Wow it sounds like things could be a little bit harder for thieving characters. But that does sound like a big jump forward. The shopkeepers actually following you around a shop impresses me, too: at times it was so easy to get out of their line of sight and steal the iventory in the Elder Scrolls III, so these new actions will probably make things quite a bit more interesting in that regard

Awesome job, Sync.

This hasn't happened to me yet in Oblivion, but it happened to me all the time in Morrowwind: your attributes have been damaged, making them lower. All you need to do is drink a restore potion, but I'm not sure where to find the people that sell potions in Oblivion.

errgh, lost a good half page when firefox crashed, anyway.
I'm bordering level 11 as an Assassin and am also in the Thieves guild though I've only done the first job where you steal the tax money. Been working more on exploring (I have locations of about 8 Oblivion gates including Kvatch and east of the prison sewer exit) and random quests that popup from people in town (vampire hunting, Elven ruin diving)

Some of the changes from Morrowind to combat & equipment I'm getting a bit miffed at, namely the simple rating of attack power on weapons. Every single thing so far is less than 8 and the only 8 item I've found is a Dremora Longsword thats too heavy to use effectively and too heavy to lug around through Oblivion so I can hock it or store it for later. Also since enemies "level up with you," fighting things like Trolls (I've actually still yet to kill one without assistance), Scamps, and Dremora within Oblivion becomes really tedious since I have to keep running away to gain a better vantage point for my bow or to heal a few meager points.

I'm a level 5 Mage and I am working on getting the recommendations for the Mage's Guild. I've been doing alot of side quests (I've only finished the first step in the main story line, in fact!), and I am currently planning on doing a quest for Sheogorath, the Daedric lord of Insanity. Not only did I find his followers amusing (including an Argonian in her skivvies telling me she was a dog, got better, but didn't become a better dog and now still isn't a very good dog and the head of the followers of Sheogorath who told me Sheogorath would talk to me because it was raining and Sheogorath liked the rain because it was wet, or because it was rainy, he wasn't sure which), but I understand that if I finish Sheogorath's quest I get the Wabbajack, which turns a creature attacked with it into another random creature. Should be interesting.

Level 23 and finishing the Mage's guild quests. I just have to say: WOW! The storyline for the Mage's guild quest is of the quality and length I would expect from most games (well maybe a bit short for a full game), and it's only one of 4 side quests in the game, not even the main storyline. I haven't even done more than the first simple quest on the main storyline (I haven't even seen Oblivion yet!) and I feel like I've played through a regular game.

That's the beauty of these games. The best part is it doesn't overwhelm like it did to me in Morrowind. Everything is so finely tuned I mean each part could work as a standalone game almost and be better than half the other stuff in that genre.

somewhere around level 20, I'm waiting more before leveling up so I can get a larger stat increase.
and I stopped having trouble with weak weapons a good while ago, used one of the sigil stones to enchant a Dwarven Longsword with 20 shock damage on strike, found a glass bow and several full sets of Mithril, Elven and Ebony armor to give me extra cash.

I'm on my second character now, after the save file for the first one was corrupted after a rather bad crash. I really like this character, I made a Kahjiit thief, and due to a trick I learned she had a sneak of 100 before I even made it out of the starting dungeon. With an agility of 107 and a maxed out sneak ability, she's pretty much an uber-pickpocket. I just walk up behind a person, quicksave, then grab anything worth interest. Earlier tonight I walked up behind a key figure in the game and completely snatched all of his gold and especially his set of chain mail while he was still wearing it. I've also figured out how to rip off shopkeepers of their entire inventories while they're in the store. It was easy in Morrowind, but due to better AI it was impossible to do without sneak and agility stats being maxed out.

Oh, and being able to snipe someone from a distance and do 3x damage is pretty sweet. I could do more than that with a blade, but I don't like getting up close. Marksmanship is just plain fun. I'm trying so very hard to play this game using only archery. You'd better believe that I'm a sneaking, stealth killing, son of a gun... you'd swear I was playing Thief: The Dark Ages or something.

On the subject of thieving, man... being a thief is fun... earlier I was visiting a count, and I snuck up behind him and lifted the keys to his secret dungeon, went into it, ripped everything off that wasn't planted, then fenced it... and then went back and inspired the guy into making me a knight-errant... muahaha!!

My machine has similar specs (Athlon 64 3500+, Via K8T800 Pro chipset, 2 Gb memory, Radeon X800 XT Platinum Edition video card, Sound Blaster Audigy 2) and the game runs beautifully. Low loading times, periodic slight pauses for loading when running through wide open spaces, and gorgeous graphics. If that's your machine and you're looking at buying Oblivion, I'd say go for it, it'll look gorgeous and should run well.

Yes yes, quickload is your best friend in this game.

*presses F5*

*botches pickpocket* "Thief!! Pickpocket! Guards!"

*hits F9*

Also, for anyone that tries those optimisation tweaks, PLEASE make a backup of your Oblivion.ini file before doing any of those. Also, go outside and save your game, then backup your save files too. Afterwards, try out ONE TWEAK AT A TIME, seeing how each one affects your performance, adding the next one as you find out which one works. Like a bonehead I tried them all at once, only to find out it causes my game to load slowly (three minutes load time??) only then to crash each time. Glad I made a backup.
