Japan picks Top 100 Games of all time...

Postby MasterDias » Wed Mar 08, 2006 4:52 pm

...or at least Famitsu subscribers do.

http://games.kikizo.com/news/200603/020.asp

I can't say that I'm surprised that RPGs make up so much of the list. But I find some parts of the list odd. FFX as #1? The game was good but not that good. FFV before VIII, IX, and VI. Glaring absences of series like Castlevania and Metroid...

Regardless, the list is interesting to read over although somewhat skewed.

#25 should be #1

No suprise final fantasy 7 is #2 :eyeroll: that game is overrated (as in, very good but overrated)

But HOW on earth did final fantasy 4 and 5 beat 6? [i]Especially[/5] 5, which isn't as great as the other 2 (4 and 6)

Also sad to see that DDR never made it to the list

Note: On the forums, some guys are talking about how bad famitsu magazine is..... so there goes Famitsu's credibility

FFX as #1 is just plain screwed up.
What's even worse is FFX-2 making it on there AT ALL.

Not quite.

If you go down the list aways, you will see a few PC games. But, yeah, console games are generally far more popular than PC games in Japan.

How is it Famitsu's fault if their readers were the ones who picked the games? And it's just peoples' opinions, no need to get all worked up ^^;;. I'm happy to see Metal Gear, Kingdom Hearts, and Xenogears made the list.

Apparently, FPS's tend to give the Japanese motion sickness.

PC/arcade games have always been overshadowed by consoles in Japan, the PC market is hardly like in the US with all the varying genres and cross-platform games that can show up on consoles.

Yeah. How horrible that the Japanese don't like PC gaming where you spend 600 dollars upgrading your system every six months so you can continue to play the latest games instead of paying 200 dollars and being able to play every game released for that system for five years or so. That's just not right. They should throw away their money the same as American consumers![/sarcasm]

Eh, other than that, it's made by readers, so I can't complain. I do think Chrono Trigger was a bit low on that list, but eh. Nice to see Dragon Quest VIII (which COMPLETELY rocks) as number 4...but behind DQ III, which is as it should be (DQ III was by far the best).

Surprised to see Final Fantasy VIII so high on the list though. The game was not well-received in Japan from what I understood. But at least FFIV beat out FFVI. Yay!

#25 Final Fantasy VI: Lost to III and V??? The class change system is not a replacement for a story! III had almost no story, and V's story, while ok, didnt' compare to the story in VI... That makes me mad... FFVII I can understand because it was just more popular, but V? I didn't think it was that popular? Apparently they really like the class change system, because that's all that III had going for it... That, and it was the first FF game to not feature the "Swish, hit, die, swish, missed dead body, swish, miss dead body, swish, miss dead body, get hit by the 9 other monsters on the screen" battle system, which was a great improvement.

And I rarely hear IV fans knock VI...

Sorry MSP, but I like FF4 way better than FF6.
I can agree FF6 is far superior to FF5 though.

FF10 is MUCH more overrated than 7.
Was their Grandia 2? If not, these guys suck. I`ll go check.

EDIT: Grandia 1 and no 2??!!!

I can't say that I'm not upset by some of their choices, but at the same time I'm not too surprised either. But I still say that X did not deserve to be the #1 game.

Any idea what games they're translating? I would love to get a translated version of Kanon... otherwise I'll never be able to play it. Given, Kanon was produced by a different company, I can still hope, right?

That type of game is still pretty niche, even in Japan.

Because a couple of them don't make sense... I can understand the FF series beating my favorite games, but I can't understand V and III beating VI, particularly III... Like, there is no logic to that whatsoever. VI had a better system than III, it had a more detailed plot, it had actual characters (rather than the blank "onion kids" what were supposed to be something the player could project himself or herself upon) III was one of the WORST games in the series, (I personally hate 1 the most, but you can't deny the FIRST game...) so i don't understand how it earned a higher spot than VI... V is almost understandable, because it at least had a plot, and they must have really liked the class change system... Or they liked the vehicles, as I believe III has the widest variety of Vehicles in the series. It is perfectly understandable that X was on top... It was the first game in the series to have voices. That's quite a big thing. And, I'm guessing the acting in the Japanese version is better than the American version...

Of course, III was also the first game in the series to have a defined mission... You pretty much had to guess in I and II... Or, rather, pay very very close attetion and talk to everyone...

Another thing that gets me is that one game shows up at least twice... Toki Meki Memorial...

Oh, and RE:4 shows up twice (GC and PS2) And SH doesn't show up at all... Well, it's no different in the US... I think it's most popular in Europe, and takes backstage in the US and Japan...
