Greatest FPS Hero

Postby Steeltemplar » Fri Mar 03, 2006 8:47 am

Who do you think is the greatest FPS hero of all time?

My personal vote? Gordon Freeman. Just a scientist with no military experience that we know of, he still managed to survive Black Mesa, battled hordes of aliens, took on the marines, and became the hero of City 17 and all humanity battling the Combine and spearheading a rebellion.

Actually, I voted Duke Nukem, just because he told a boss ten times his size that he was going to rip his head off and poop down his neck, and then actually delivered on it.

Gordon Freeman, for the same reasons as Steeltemplar, although the nameless Soldier/Sailor/Psychic from System Shock 2 would ba a close second.

 are you serious? What kind of poll is this? Gordon by MILES. MIT Graduate in his mid 20s that saves the world from the Combine. A superior alien race. Gordon Freeman wins.

Gordon Freeman beat 809745872345's of combines, giant green claws killing people, Nihilith, this giant alien that shoots stuff at him. Then TONS AND TONS AND TONS of Stryders, hordes of zombies, manhacks, aliens, more aliens, more zombies (parasitic), combine troops, antlions, and of course your good ol headcrabs.

It's Quantity that matters, not quality (or size)

Don't forget the poison headcrabs and the superfast headcrab zombies. Both of those are a pain to take down.

I should also mention that I consider the Doom Marine to definitely be up there. I mean, he went and cleaned out Hell - mostly with a double barreled shotgun.

Yeah, but Gordon didn't pull a giant monster's head off and then poop in his throat. I don't think Dante could touch that.

I haven't played a whole lot of FPS games, but my fave to this day is Deus Ex, so my vote goes to JC Denton.

I don't think that's a mark against Gordon.

Metroid isn't an FPS.

I voted "other". Anne from Trespasser is the greatest.

No but Metroid Prime is.

As much as I love Half-Life Gordon Freeman himself really isn't that cool. There's not much narrative to him since you play the game entirely from a first person perspective in terms of his character. You only see what he see's, you're never taken out of that context, he never speaks, barely interacts with the other characters, and so on. That was intentional on the part of Valve but it doesn't really make him that "cool" or interesting from a narrative standpoint. It's basically to convince you that you are Freeman in his world and immerse you in that with no distractions.

I voted for the Master Chief. But JC Denton and Samus Aran are up there too.

The reason for that is because YOU are gordon freeman. Valve made it that way so YOU were the person imagining what you were thinking and saying and stuff.

Master Chief hands down.

Lets see:

1) He can adapt to ANY situation.

2) He has no lingering emotional baggage or problems or anything that surves to limit him blowing stuff up

3) Armor (nuff said)

4) He is not the run-into-the-middle-of-a-trillion-enemies-and-come-out-unscathed guy. Read the books he takes a beating and keeps on tickin.

5) He doesn't have any cheesy dialog

6) He owns Elites and crushes grunts underfoot.

I say Garrett from the First Person Stealth 'Thief' games. But since your probably talking about First Person Shooter heros I would say Cate Archer from the 'No One Lives Forever' series. She's intelligent, beautiful and sarcastically funny and can kick butt!

I know that's why I just said that. It still doesn't make Gordon Freeman as a character any cooler. Immersive yes but the cool factor for him is pretty nill no matter how ya look at it.
