*sigh* I need some family advice...

Postby Nikolai Melodie » Fri Mar 03, 2006 1:36 am

Today was supposed to be one of those fun girls day out shopping days, you know... the kind that people like my family never have because its normally just my mum and I. But we're in Florida on vacation, and my aunt and cousin whom I almost idolize came with us.

At a store, my cousin bought a confederate army hat, which I found very funny, and I sort of said "I am always on the opposite side of the war, I was with Britian in the Revolution, I dislike this place..." and then my aunt began to yell at me for five minutes straight in the middle of the mall about how I was so fortuneate to be born in America because in the middle east they do horrible things to girls at birth and in China they kill them.

I asked my mum about it, but all she could say to me was that I shouldn't have opened my mouth in the first place. I know I shouldn't have, but I was more or less talking to Claire who shares the same opinion as me..and I had no idea that my aunt thought that way, or I wouldn't have said it...

She kept saying about how all the foreign people (I'm trying to use her exact words) run into this country because they don't want to live over there... and now I have two problems, (1) shame... the entire time she was yelling at me, my cousin kept looking back at me with this intereting look in her eyes...it was one that I'd never seen before. (2) I have to see them again on Saturday, and my Aunt Sherry forgets about things like this because thats the kind of person she is... but I just don't... I remember when I was three years old something simmilar happened where I threw a barbie at my little cousion Cayla (who was a BABY) and hurt her and Sherry started yelling at me like that.

I joined this forum because I wanted to learn about Christianity and my love of Anime, so I don't know if you want to pray for me knowing that I'm not a Christian, but I could certianly use everything I could get to even face them..Thank you, a lot every one.

err...please don't ask me to ask my mother. My current living situation is: 4 bedroom house, 2 filled. Mother and Child only need to speak when Child runs out of food or mother forgets to pay bills or Child gets a C- or lower in school.

not pray for you because you're not a Christian? Nonsense, of course we'll pray for you.

Regardless of whether you are right nor wrong, you are entitled to hold your own opinions.

I think your aunt could have reasoned with you about her beliefs rather than yell at you. There seems to be a misconception that teenagers and youths cannot understand reason and simply need to be told what's right and wrong.

While I can't relate to your situation 100%, I understand that you may feel sad or frustrated with this event.

We'll keep you in our prayers.

I'll pray for you. Your Aunt had no reason to get angry at you the way she did, even if she disagreed with you, and I can understand the frustration with being treated the way you were. Simply disagreeing with someone about something is no reason to get angry with them and yell at them.

And just a minor note from a history buff: The Confederacy was a side in the Civil War, not the Revolutionary war like you seem to be saying. You probably haven't covered that part of history much in school so far, but just thought I'd let you know.

Your aunt doesn’t seem to have a sense of humor. Personally I don't see anything wrong with what you said, I don't know if this would work but you could try to talk to your aunt about it, just say you don't want to be yelled at if she expects you to visit with her. I'll pray for you.

Even though you were jesting, some people take patriotism very seriously. Maybe she had a relative or a loved one who died defending our country? It does seem that she overreacted, but there might be a possible reason (in her mind) for her reaction. However, lashing out at you in public like that was in very poor taste. She could have done it in a civilized manner, especially since you weren't serious. Have you thought about talking to her about it when you calm down a little? Just approach her and say "Hey...I was kidding about this and I think you might have taken it the wrong way. Please don't be offended. I felt very uncomfortable when you did that."

And I will most definitely pray for you :)
