Beyond Good and Evil

Postby madphilb » Wed Mar 17, 2004 11:05 pm

I looked and didn't find a thread specifically on this game, so here it is:

GET THIS GAME!

What? You need more of a reason than just me saying so? Ok... I'll bite ;)

OH, one word of warning - there is some TV grade language in it as well as a few J-C exclimations (that in my opinion could have been changed or left out all together)... just to make you aware of this. (also note = this is not an offical review, just some ramblings from a fan).

Ubi made the mistake of releasing this in the midst of the pre-Christmas rush and it got lost in it.... and the good side of that is you can now get this gem for about $20 US.

Beyond Good and Evil is mostly an action/adventure game (much like Zelda), in fact this might be the closest thing right now on the XBox that you're going to get to Zelda (Azurak runs a close 2nd, but lacks the player/NPC interactivity that makes Zelda great).

One of the other things that I love about this game is that it has a bit of Pokemon Snap in it (i.e. taking pictures of local wildlife, sometimes even requireing you to be creative with your surroundings to get the shot). As a photojournalist the main character uses her camera quite a bit, and this photo-collection is one of the main sources of money for you in the game.

The game has elements of stealth in it (though not nearly as complicated as something like Splinter Cell or MGS2). What's amazing there is how well the game handles the character in these situations.... the character automatically hugs walls when standing next to them, tip-toes around even when you're not moving along at a crouch so as not to be seen, etc.

Like most action adventure games it's as much an exercise in collecting stuff as well, in this case pearls are very important (as they are used for purchaceing some upgrades).

The game was never tiring or mundane (though it does make the game a tad shorter than I would have likes, but much more might have put too much of doing the same thing over and over again into the game).

The camera was excellent.. in several ways. 1st, I almost never had problems with camera angles while playing. This is a common problem for 3rd person perspective games (Mario on the 64, as an example, was terrible most of the time). 2nd, the use of some fixed camera positions and some special effects with speed and motion blur added some really cinematic effects to the gameplay.

In a few places the camera angle starts fixed and follows you part way across the area you're moving, then falls in behind you like it normally is, and all done seemlessly.

In addition in a few places, the beginning of the game being the most obvious, the main character is faced fighting some monsters that have landed, and is having to fight hand-to-hand (so to speak), she destroys one (which releases the child it grabbed) and another one pops up to attack. After a bit the music is playing, the speed of the game slows down (slow motion) and the sound effects become somewhat distant.... much as you might see in a very dramatic battle in a movie (think LOTR, there are a few scenes in there that used this techique).

The game makes clever use of a follower character that often partners with you (and is often times necessary to solve puzzles or to kill enemies).

The game has drama, places that just might make you cry, and places that'll have you laughing out loud (well, I did, but I'm fairly easy to get a laugh out of anyway, so, your milage may vary). Cinematic is the only way to really describe it (yet unlike a game like MGS, you're not faced with too many places where you just sit and watch).

On top of all that, there are some really nice touches to the game world.

1) The game world has day and night, and it doesn't effect much, but it does give a sense of life to the game world. At night in the city, for instance, the windows of the buildings light up, signs are properly lit, etc.... all fading from day to night to day.

2) The digital camera you use identifies items for you at times (for instance, when in one of the outdoor enviornments it'll ID the city, some of the other locations, etc when you point the camera at them). Several of the many items it identifies are the starts in the sky... giving the name of the star and/or it's constelation it's in... a simple touch but still nice (again, giving extra life to the world).

3) The above mentioned stars are also identified in the reflection of them in the water! (how cool is that!)

4) People in the street wander around some, and the crowd changes as you progress through the game.

The only thing that would have made the game better would be if it was longer (maybe they'll do a sequal to it) and I think the photos of the animals are fixed amounts that you earn, it would be nice if they also paid you based on the quality of the photo and allowed you to replace shots when/if you get better ones (much as Snap did).

Now, why are you still sitting there and not out buying it? Hmmm?

I was dissapointed nobody ever bought this game, like Panzer Dragoon Orta....

Yeah, The main downside is....... it's all over before you know it. Took me less than 7 hours to beat. I bought it around it's release for the PC. It was kinda funny... I bought the PC version so I could save $10 and the next month they lower it to $20! Anyways, the game is great... I agree... GO BUY IT NOW!!!!!

I agree whole-heartedly... Beyond Good and Evil Rocks!!

The fighting may be linear and simple (except at the end) but the overall game is just awesome! I really hope they make a sequel.

I've heard this game is very good but I'm having so many problems its cheesing me off. Its made up of three cds and on the 2nd cd it crashed the computer (whilst installing). After many attempts and about an hour I finally got it installed. Then it didn't go past the menu screen so I downloaded the patch and a Nvidia update for the driver. The game now works but the picture is lagging behind so much in the cinematics (and a bit in the game) that it is not enjoyable.
Does anyone know how to fix this?

Also I tried to play the game and there was this eye plant attacking the pic guy and jade was surrounded by teeth and couldn't get out to fight the eye creature. How do I escape this?

(This is Warrior 4 Jesus - I can't log in because CAA has locked me out and I can't ever get back in it seems).

Anyway, thanks. Please help me.

I too had some trouble getting the game to work at first. My suggestion for the lagging video is to lower the resolution that the game is running at. If it's too high then the video will lag farther and farther behind the audio. Also, I'm not sure if this will happen to you, when I got the video running smoothly the cinema scenes were still slightly off on the lipsync of the characters. I couldn't figure out how to fix that.

As for the teeth, the rod that Pey'j gives you allows you to charge up an attack that releases energy all around you. Do that, and it will knock down the teeth surrounding you.

Edit: Also, in order to fix the lag problem you may need to turn off some of the special effects like the fog effect and dynamic shadows. In order to this (and lower the resolution) go under Start/Programs/[whereever Beydon Good and Evil is] and use the Configurer (I don't think that's a word...). It'll bring up a menu with the options you need. Good Luck!

Thanks mastersquirrel, but I've tried all those. I don't have a really slow computer: its = to a 1.8Ghz Athlon with 512mb at least and a Geforce 4MX 440 videocard. I don't understand it. There's no lag at 512 by whatever resolution with all the effects off (but I have higher than the recommended requirements on the box). When it is off sync (the picture is like 1 minute behind the sound and music).
Driving me nuts. Sorry, I'm not in a good mood at the moment.

Thanks heaps for the teeth solution.
(Finally could log on again also) yeah!

I tried this game and enjoyed it quite a lot - however when the 3rd person camera angle sometimes zooms in at tight spaces and then zooms back out in the open automatically, it makes me dizzy.

I also cannot play first person shooter games because they make me dizzy.

Alas, am I fated to play 2D space invaders-era games?

Um... mastersquirrel, I don't know how to charge up for attack. This is frustrating. All she does when I hold the left mouse button down is fight with her staff. And nothing else happens. The info on screen says she collects energy this way. But I don't see it happening. (Still trapped in the circle of teeth)

Hmm... that's wierd W4J... though the game does kinda need a lot of resources to run well. Does it work alright now? If not, I'd wait till you get past the first part to make any judgements on the video/audio lag. The first part has a good bit of action in the cinema scenes than the others usually do, plus with the smoke it drags the framerate down. Maybe it'll get better after the first part.

As for the charging, what's happening with you doesn't seem to make sense. If you hold the button down it should charge... The only thing I can think to try and fix it would be to try and reset the controls in case something was messed up, but I don't even think you can change the controls... I'm sorry man, I haven't the foggiest.

Hold the button down? Oh, I'm an idiot. I interpreted that 'hold the left mous button to collect energy of the ....' was to just tap it several times. Duh. Thanks mate!

Okay, I'm in Hillys. Upto the part where I race through the Looters Cavern 1 (one with all the red lasers on the sides and the big doors that shut quickly) to get back my money. I keep dying (in my sub), it's really difficult. Got any tips?

Also, did the creators really think it necessary to have Peyj (the pig) say Jesus name in vain several times? It really stands out in an otherwise non-offensive game.

The Looters' Caverns are actually just some side quests if you want to collect more pearls, so you don't actually have to do them if you don't want to. Anyway, the only real way to do well in those places is just to keep your hand on the gas and try not to hit the wall. Sorry, but that's about as strategic as those thing get. Also, shoot any boxes in your way, that always helps. :)

As for Pey'j, I never really noticed him say it except for one time in a very short cinema scene where that was mainly all that was said. Anyway, I don't know why they did that. Guess they just thought it fit his accent or something stupid like that. But I can tell you that for the most part the game doesn't have bad language.

Also, I find your problem with the charging very amusing. ;)

I don't have a problem with the charging now, but yes, it was a bit...
Also how many pearls do you need to finish the game? I have about 6,000 credit after buying a bit of stuff (originally had a total of 13,000 credit or something). But everything is so expensive!
I love the originality of the game and you really care for the characters which is always a bonus.

Thanks mate!

I can't quite remember, but it's about... I want to say a little over 40 pearls. The only thing you use pearls for is to get new stuff from Mamago garage, so however many pearls it takes to buy everything there is how many you'll need.

Oh yeah, I loved how the characters were so real. The whole game actually feels really cinematic, and I absolutely loved that. Also, the musci just rocks. Especially the propaganda song.

You're welcome.
