Doom...to get or not to get?

Doom...to get or not to get?

Postby Knives » Fri Feb 03, 2006 2:28 pm

I have been playing the demo of the original doom quite a bit lately and I have really enjoyed it, but I heard there was a lot of satanic stuff in it. I havent noticed anything (Except the demons, obviously) from the demo, but I was wondering if it got worse. THe same questions go for doom 2 and final doom.

Thanks

My knowledge is that it won't get too much worse. Just more demons. And you shoot them all. So.

I haven't really seen the earlier Doom games, but I have seen Doom III, and the violence in at least some parts of the game is extreme. I won't go into details, but suffice it to say that a half-minute cut scene from early in the game was gory enough that I wasn't interested. And I liked Half-Life 2, so I don't hate all FPS games. Honestly, I'd go with something with more storyline like Far Cry, Half-Life 2, or The Chronicles of Riddick game. I've played all of them, and they do have the violence level typical of a first person shooter, but from what I've heard and read the latest Doom seemed to be focused more on looks and violence than good gameplay.

Well, you CAN pick up the Ultimate DOOM for 10 bucks at Wal Mart, but as LorentzForce said, see demon, shoot demon, because you don't use demon stuff (the difference between orignal DOOMs and DOOM 3)

It's not too bad... I don't think. I don't remember all the graphics from Doom1 (Doom2 is the better and more played/edited game).

The original DOOM's is pretty much similar to DOOM II. If anything, DOOM II's is worse, but since you're actively annihilating said demons ...

yes, Doom2 is worse graphically. Doom3 is even worse...

Actually, Doom2 is as bad as it gets since players can put ANYTHING in the game. I've run into maps that have porn on the walls.

Well, the porn is from custom maps, not the actual game. But the custimization is the main reason i want to get Doom!

But you can customize a great many games. Is there some reason to customize DOOM particularly? I will grant you that the level editing is easier because it's only planar-heightmapped, but that also limits the types of structures you can make (no rooms over rooms, specifically -- other sector engines like Build only get around this by cheating).

My guess is that if you can handle Berserk, you can probably handle Doom. ^_^d

Well, I know you can customize a lot of games, but Doom seems like the easiest, and it also seems to have tons of custom stuff available on the internet.
And actually TrigunX89, I have never seen Beserk, I just like the picture :D

If you want to customize a game, it really doesn't get any better than Doom2. There are lots of source ports out there (it isn't the .exe file that you pay for if you get Doom2. Remember that it is the IWAD that is most important), which you can get on Doomworld.

For editing, I recommend that you try out DeePsea. This program can be used to make maps and change graphics and music and stuff.

Ok, thanks for the info...I am guessing then that there is no where where you can download the iwad for free (legally)?

nope. But you can get PWADs freely. PWADS are expansions of IWADS... so still, you need to have one of the following...
doom.wad
doom2.wad
tnt.wad
plutonia.wad

only 4 IWADs here. doom.wad is the original Doom, and doom2.wad is Doom2. tnt.wad is Team TNT's game TNT Evilution, which is a pretty good mapset that IDSoftware liked so much that they bought it from TTNT. Plutonia was also made by TTNT, but it was made to be very difficult.

Doom was fun back in the day, but it just looks dated now.

(though I'll admit to still playing the original Unreal Tournament. Doom was, what, 320x200 mode? UT doesn't even go that low. And it comes with UnrealEd to make your own maps.)

Yah, and I have to pay for those. The main problem with that, is that Doom is rated M, and that means you have to be 17 to buy it :(

Well, to tell you the truth, I mainly play old games because my computer can't handle the new stuff (when I say old, I dont mean as old as doom, I mean more like as old as UT2k4) I play the original UT quite a bit, but mainly because my FPS don't suffer when I play it...

So play DOOM Legacy. This uses OpenGL, even (I play at 1024x768).

best source port of Doom there is. Skulltag and ZDaemon, the two most successful Doom multiplayer networks, are based off of zdoom. Zdoom can also do some awesome things when edited propperly

Legacy is good to, for one reason... a Legacy port called Doom Wars.

Legacy is also good because it's cross-platform. *coughs*

The original dooms have grounds for potentially the BEST multiplayer ever made.

Doom is still my favorite game of all time. It has every element a game should have. Cool environments, fast gameplay, its basically a test of pure skill. I give this game a 10/10 (even standing to the games being released today).

As far as violence and such goes. When you reach Hell in this game it can get pretty gory. But its not glorifying it. When you're there you feel terrified, and you want to get out. I don't know if you'd find the representation of Hell offensive, but it is darned right creepy.

Well, im not too concerned about the gore, the graphics aren't much good and I play a lot of other M rated games (Half Life, FarCry, F.E.A.R., of course I play most of those at my friends house, cause my computer isnt good enough for most of em), the main thing I was really concerned about was things like if evil was glorified, if there was lots of pentegrams, upside down crosses etc. Thanks for the info sonic_13!!!

btw, other tools to look for include deHackEd, which does a lot of kewl stuff. Also, if you're into coding, the source for the Doom engine is open, as are all the sources to the sps.
