Major update

Postby K. Ayato » Fri Jan 27, 2006 11:19 am

Thought I'd fill you in on some of the details. Well, first off, I wasn't getting anywhere with finding a new job. For one thing, the good ones were too far away from home, and also I either didn't have the acquired education level or the experience needed for the jobs I found online. That, and I wasn't interested in going back to school. Then I started looking for jobs on caljobs.ca.gov and I found a mental health specialist job through the California National Guard. I finally got in touch with the recruiter a bit after Christmas, and even took the ASVAB aptitude (sp?) test, which I did pretty good at.

Well, everything looked like it was going ok, but my dad and later my whole family agreed that a Guard position wasn't cut out for me. Specifically, 'cause I'd go for training and all, and then that was it, until they called me to pitch in. In other words, I'd be sitting on my butt in the meantime, as was my tendency for a large portion of my life.

So instead, I realized that the Army wasn't as bad as I was making it out to be (I had lost 2 friends last year that were in the Army. Both were caught in explosions in Iraq) and got in touch with an Army recruiter who had called not long after I had taken the ASVAB test. He said I have all the qualifications I need for (yet again) a mental health specialist position, and also because I have my bachelor's degree, can qualify as an officer.

Only thing I have to worry about is my weight. Right now I'm walking 10 miles Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday; do a 5-mile hike on Wednesday and Saturday, and just relax on Sunday. That, and I limit my portions. Sounds frustrating but I've been doing it for almost a week now.

Anyway, that's the update. Any prayers will be appreciated.

I'll offer up prayers for your success - and advice to not be discouraged about your weight. My brother is currently in the Army Reserves, and when he joined he was "a little pudgy" by their standards. Basic training and keeping up regular diet and exercise put him at the weight they expected.

The Army absolutely does not want the "skin and bones" that fashion mags want, so as long as you keep a balanced diet and exercise regularly, you should have no problems. That's healthy for anyone - and that's what the Army wants.

I'll pray for you. But don't worry, your qualifications sound more than adequate to me, and your exercise/diet routine sounds like it will definitely help you to get in better shape. I'm sure you won't have many problems getting in.

I wish you the best in this endeavor and will pray for you. If you have the chance to be an officer, I'd suggest going for it, if you ever want to leave the military later in life the leadership experience opens many doors.

Yeah I agree if you're going for 4 plus years you should try to go for OCS, Officers Training. Good luck and I'll send some prayers your way.

Love is that feeling you get when a girl looks at you and it feels like your driving a car at high speeds and experience a sudden drop. You know what i mean? That sudden sinking feeling you get in your stomach? Yeah, that's love. Leave's you speechless everytime.

Update. Just found out that as a birthday present, my parents are going to be paying membership to Jenny Craig. At first it sounded weird, but then I realized it's for the best, and I could use a bit more help and monitoring along the way.

3rd day on the program now. It's not too bad. Been exercising and today even did some jogging along with my walks, but my left ankle is still getting used to it, so right now it's kinda strained.

Guess it wasn't a weird early birthday present after all.

Big update!! I went into the recruiting office again, and even though with Jenny Craig I've now lost 17 pounds (whoa!), the weight is still a bit too much. However, they have a Plan B, in which they see how much body fat the person has. Minimum is 35%, and I found out I'm a hairline away from meeting that mark. So, they are gonna sign me up for a test that looks at my heart rate. That'll be this weekend. If I pass, that's pretty much it and I'm shipped off for basic training. Please pray.
