I've been dropping in to this website for about three months to check out the reviews... figured I ought to sign up and say hi. Not big on forums anymore, but I do enjoy them on the occasion that the topic is interesting.
I'm a forty-mumble engineer who used to go to comic book/ sci fi cons as a college student and look high-and-low for the japanese stuff (which was REALLY hard to find back then) and got tired of the effort.
I started reading Manga and watching Anime again a few years ago in order to monitor what my kids were watching/reading, and wound up being more into it than them. I'm pretty leniant when it comes to comics and animation: I have no doubt my father would blow a gasket if he saw some of the things my 14 year old IS allowed to see. But, I do have limits, and they have more to do with the concepts than the occasional semi-nudity (although there are also limits there.)
I find Lumiere on Kiddy Grade a lot more of a concern than occasional Ranma toplessness; she looks like some kind of Jon-Benet Ramsey clone, a little girl being made to look and act sexy far beyond her age. I could watch Ranma all day, without concern, but couldn't get through two episodes of KG. I'm also disturbed by shows like Alien 9, which seem to just be about hopelessness and evil. But, Now and Then, Here and There is one of my all-time favorites, because, no matter how dark things became, the hero never loses his faith in his fellow man, in the future, and in Good. I suppose I should add, he does this without being an annoying Pollyana.
Favorite Anime: anything by Miyazaki, plus Noir, Oh My Goddess, NTHT, You're Under Arrest, and (sorry) FLCL. Religous affiliation: Terminal Lutheran. Kids 2, Wife 1, Dogs 3, Cats 1, Fish (lost count). Music choice is normally Classical, but I like lots of stuff.
