National Guard preparation

Postby K. Ayato » Wed Dec 28, 2005 2:52 pm

Hi. I finally managed to get in touch today with someone in the National Guard. I told him that I was interested in a mental health position that I found through a government job website (caljobs.ca.gov). He asked me some questions, and also gave me some tips on taking the ASVAB aptitude test. I'm (tentatively) scheduled to take that test a week from today. So lately I've been looking it over and brushing up on things. I'm a little rough in the math sections, but the writing and comprehension sections I've only missed a couple. However the biggest thing I have to focus on is losing weight. I'm above the minimum requirement for my height, and I know one requirement to get the job is if I pass a physical. Please pray that all goes well. Thanks.

You could always grow taller. ;)

I'll be praying that you can prepare well to satisfy the requirements.

Ok are you looking to join the National Guard or get a civilian job within the organization? You kind of got me confused. Well I'll pray anyway.

Update: I gave the fellow the measurements he needed. Now I need to brush up on some math and tackle the 200-question practice test, and let him know how I did on that one.

So you're going enlisted then? What MOS (Military Occupation Specialty) are you specifically trying to get?

I'll be praying for you to do well. I don't think you'll have a problem with the ASVAB, I did pretty well on it, and I took it cold. With your preparation, you'll do fine. I think my score is good for two or three years, so I'll probably have to end up taking it again if I ever do decide to join the military. Anyway, good luck.

I really hope things turn out okay. I'll be sure to continue praying for ya. I'm sure if you prepare yourself, the test shouldn't be a problem :)

Anyway I took my ASVAB off the cuff in July and scored a 78. Anything above a 70 or so if I remember correctly is a very good score and can gurantee that you'll initially qualify for just about every MOS.

Thanks for the encouragement regarding the test, guys. I'm scheduled to take the real one next Tuesday. Then, I'll ask what full-time positions are available in the National Guard, not just in the mental health department. I talked with my dad last night, and he says if I'm bent on joining the service, to go all the way and make a full-time committment. Makes perfect sense to me. He said it's possible they might assign me to work as a nurse, which would be totally ironic (I changed from nursing to psychology halfway through college). Anyway, keep praying. I've pretty much got my mind set on joining the National Guard, but I need to know that this IS what the Lord wants. I'm tired (and a bit afraid) of jumping headlong into something that turns out to be not part of God's will in the first place.

I don't mean to double post, but I just wanted to add another update. I'm scheduled to take the real ASVAB test on Tuesday morning. I retook the practice test online and I'm pretty confident about the whole thing now. Please pray that my nerves don't overule my brain. Thanks.

I hope and pray that this goes well for you. I thought about entering the Navy for a while (I was in ROTC for a year) and I realized that it wasn't the life for me, but the military life is very rewarding for others. Don't worry about the ASVAB, and don't believe anything the recruiter tells you that isn't in writing. The Guard will put you in almost any MOS they need when you exit basic, so be prepared.

Very good advice Puritan. Make SURE that you read the fine print of the contract that you sign (if and when you do) and make sure that you get everything you want (or were promised). I'll be praying for you, and I'll try to remember you specifically on Tuesday.

No need to worry about the contracts when they come. My dad and I already agreed that I show him anything they ask me to sign prior to me signing it.

I drove by the recruiter office. Thank the Lord it's close to home. I'm a bit nervous, but I know I'll do fine.

Good news! I passed! 84! :jump:

Patrick (my recruiter) suggested from the score data that I try out for another test to see if I have what it takes to be a linguist, as they are in high demand. I said it was worth a try. I'm still interested in the mental health position, so I'm taking the time to pray about my options.

Thanks to everyone who prayed in the events prior and during the time I took the ASVAB. It's really not as bad as it appears.

If you decide to go that route, linguist is a great position, I had a cousin who was a linguist in the Navy and loved it. You learn a great deal and I believe you recieve cultural training as well. Plus, the skills you learn can help you alot once you leave the military. I wish you well in the service.

Thanks. I'm still praying about it, and I'm scheduled to take that exam that sees if I qualify to become a linguist later this week.

I called my recruiter this afternoon. He said he sent in a request for the linguist exam (the DLAB) and had not yet received a response. I told him I'm all for giving the exam a shot, but I'm still very interested in working in the medical or mental health departments. He told me he'd look and see if there are any openings and let me know as soon as possible. I guess the mental/medical stuff is in my blood. Kind of like the call of the wild. Sooner or later you won't be able to resist it.

Good news! The recruiter called and met up with me outside my house and handed me a packet of materials. One of which was a DVD regarding basic training, and also a couple of forms to fill out! Woo-hoo! :jump: God was behind it the whole time, even when I felt nothing was happening.

I'm still looking through the paperwork, but my mom, aunt, and grandma think this is the best choice out of all the military options I've seen so far, since mental health is closest to the field of psychology, and I have a degree in that field.

Change of plans. I'm not joining the Guard. Instead, I'm looking at the same position (Mental Health Specialist) in the Army.

That means I have to lose weight (of course), and work on my endurance and stamina. Keep praying.
