My youth group

Postby Anna Mae » Tue Dec 27, 2005 1:05 pm

On the whole, I think that it is going down, but I would like to lift up a specific person today. Tatum is a senior in high school and very devout. She sincerely loves God. Her parents are not Christian, and recently things got so bad that Tatum moved out of her home to live with her grandmother. The thing is, Tatum has picked up some incorrect (in the opinion of myself and the majority of Christians out there) theological ideas from her grandmother. For example, she believes that God doesn't want us to celebrate Christmas, or something akin to that.

Furthermore, her church attendance is declining. I want to have a serious conversation with her about it. She seems willing to talk... in places like the middle of band class. I asked her if she would be at church that Wednesday so that I could talk to her then, and she said yes. Wednesday rolled around and she avoided me all night, even leaving early. Many younger girls in our church idolize her, and I fear that the example she is setting right now is not good.

Our youth group really needs a person like the Tatum that we used to know. Your prayers are much appreciated.

Lifted one for her.
Theme Scripture: Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage. (Galatians 5:1)

And a verse for all us single folks: Do we have no right to take along a believing wife, as do also the other apostles, the brothers of the Lord, and Cephas? (1 Corinthians 9:5)

Sorry, but I don't get why she is setting a bad example? I will pray for her and you too.
And I'll stop this pretending that I can

Out of curiosity, why not?

The whole not attending church bit as well as the unorthodox theology.

I was able to have a good talk with Tatum the yesterday (during band, no less). She is doing better than I had hoped. She is trying to start a youth group at her grandmother's congregation because it didn't have one. I'm still not sure about some of the ideas that she has picked up, but I know that God is watching over her. Thank you very much for your prayers, everyone.

Thank you all for your prayers. They are still definately needed. She has picked up more ideas that I am positive are incorrect, but will not say what they are because of their theological nature. She also does not care that myself and our pastors disagree with her. This is very dangerous. Acutally, I don't think she considers herself part of our congregation anymore. This is very frustrating for me. She is very passionate and sincere, with emotions over logic. She would be the type to drag others down with her, although she would think that she is showing them the truth. This situation is twisting my heart. Please pray not only for her, but also for me, that I would not do anything that God would not want me to do regarding this.

Wow. Have I really not given you an update since January? I'm really sorry.

The situation is going horribly. I feel like I have failed. Things are very bad. Please continue to pray.

I'll be praying for both of you. I'm sorry to hear things are going worse. I don't know what happened, but I'll pray that you'll get encouraged too.

I wrote her a long, loving, and gentle email the other day. She has purposely avoided talking with me about it. At this point I am feeling like I just have to give it up to God. There is not much more that I can do but keep loving her. Thank you for your prayers. They are still very needed and appreciated.

Hey Anna Mae,

Let's hope for the best. The breakthroughs sometimes come in the most hopeless and darkest moments, and no matter what happens, God is there. Love her with all you've got and leave the rest to Him.

I would like to thank everyone who has prayed, offered advice, and waited for my few and far between updates.

Tatum graduated and moved away, so I probably will not see her again. Before she left I brought up the email in an effort to bring some resolution to the situation. I suppose the confrontation could have gone worse. She felt good about the email, although it did not have some of the particular effects that I was praying for. This will probably be the last update. I thank all of you very much for your prayers.
