People get "Hardcore" and "Casual" confused.

In actual fact, casual gamers are the ones who buy a game because it looks realistic. Hardcore gamers care more about gameplay than graphics. They're the ones who are still playing SNES and N64, who are excited about the Revolution Controller.

Casual gamers will get a PS3 and hardcore gamers will get a revolution.

It seems the definitions of hardcore and casual have been reversed from what they should be!

Bah, I don't own an old machine, such as an SNES, because I cannot afford one. However, I have been playing old computer games almost exclusively as of late. So I have no idea what category I fit into. But it doesn't matter, because I love playing what I do.
I don't have to be l33t to enjoy myself.

Actually, I put gamers in one of two categories (well actually you can be somewhat of both)

The first category is the "videogame purist" sort of type. Where they love zelda and mario and generally have been playing a much longer time. They tend to be somewhat open minded and are stereotyped as nerds who love kiddy videogames. They can also love RPGs. Their console of choices are Nintendo and Sony consoles. And perfer the DS over the PSP (Usually, not all)

The other are the gamers who are the "casual" sort who are more into shooters and sports and stuff. They tend to not be "nerds" and are more "jocks" (Certaintly not all are jocks of course) Their console of choice are Microsoft and Sony consoles. And usually perfer the PSP over the DS (Not saying that all are of course) They are stereotyped by the "purists" as "closeminded" because they do not give things like Ouendan, Mario, Zelda, RPGs, or Katamari Damacy a chance. They usually stick to like Halo and Grand Theft Auto.


Of course these are two wide ranges. And doesn't fit all. My friend who is more on the "purist" side has both a DS and a PSP. I love the First Person Shooter genre (Half-Life, Counter-Strike, and Day of Defeat!) But I absolutely love Ouendan, Mario Kart DS, We <3 Katamari, and imported games.

It appears to me that the Ps2 is kind of a "middleground" system for both the "Purist" and the "non-purist", as it supplies games for both types. (Example, it has GTA to DDR. Final Fantasy to Madden)

I really disagree with your definition of casual and hardcore. Casual to me refers to people who occasionally pick up a controller to play for an hour or two, it has nothing to do with graphics.

Hardcore to me refers to people who will plop down on the couch and pull out 5+ straight hours on a game. Heck, I've had nights where I'll lie in bed playing Guilty Gear on my PSP for hours on end when I should be sleeping.

Do hardcore games like gameplay more than graphics? Yup, for the most part, but that doesn't mean we want to play some game with trashier visuals than RPG maker.

In addition, it seems to me that not all (blatant) casual gamers even like games, they just do it because it has become the "cool" thing to own or engage in.
i.e: many celebrities, you see them at launch parties and big events but most of the time it's for their own publicity or they were asked to come as promotion, not because they're going to use the products they're handed on a silver platter. further example, Madonna claimed to have thrown into a dumpster a brand new Xbox 360 after it overheated, she admits she hates games and yet was apparently playing the unit long enough for it to overheat.

No you pretty much got it completely wrong Midori. I'll be getting a PS3 because it will have the kinds of games I like to play. Games are more important to me than systems, and some of you seriously need to get over these "system war" posts. And don't reply telling me differently please that you're "not trying to say any system is better"...it's getting old. You can tell me till you're blue in the face that water isn't wet but it still is. And some of you are way too wrapped up in this.

While I don't agree with your definition I'll point out some flawed logic there. Wouldn't hardcore people be the ones who would spend $400 over $300, for an HDTV ready system, that can connect to two TV's, and that has a hardrive? Over a system that doesn't have any of those "hardcore" features?

To tell the truth, I am sick and tired of this "hardcore gamer" crap that the gaming companies, magazines, etc. try to push on us. [sarcasm] That's what I want to spend my formative years doing. Spending all my free time with my other gamer-loser friends playing games, ignoring everything else, and getting to the end squeaking through high school, maybe going to college, and working a dead-end job because I had to be a "hardcore gamer". [/sarcasm] In fact, it is my hatred for the "hardcore gamer" image that endears me to Nintendo. Nintendo, from my observation, is much more casual-gamer friendly than its competitors. ergo, I'm getting a Revolution when it comes out.

At least the consoles are vaguely relevant to one's personal preferences, but how many people here have game tastes actually fit the bill of "casual" or "hardcore" to a t? I really don't think those are valid interpretations. See, the XBox 360 is a piece of trash (IMO), therefore I will not be buying it unless some amazing RPG comes out for it. And don't tell me about the Squeenix RPGs going to the system, no one knows if they'll flop or not, and given Squeenix's track record as of lately, flopping is a mighty big chance.

I will be buying PS3 and Revo most likely the day they come out, but since I only am getting 2 of the new systems does that make me a casual gamer? Am I a casual gamer even though I'll be buying a multitude of games for both systems and more than likely beating each more than 3 times?

You can't base someone being hardcore against casual depending on what or how many systems they buy or even own for that matter. I know hardcore gamers who don't own a single system, but face them in Marvel VS Capcom 2, Soul Calibur, or any other VS arcade game and watch them rip you to shreds.

Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, and Cry-On. Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey look amazing and will be completely original. Also From Software's Enchant Arm looks pretty promising. It's kind of wierd most of the ones to look for in 06-07 will be on the 360 instead of the PS3, so far anyway.

It's kind of wierd most of the ones to look for in 06-07 will be on the 360 instead of the PS3, so far anyway.

True there's no gurantee, but I think it's reasonable for me to be confident they'll be darn good games if the Revolution people here can have the same confidence for that system.

Well considering most of the original next gen RPG's coming out in the next two years have been announced exclusively for the 360 that could very well change. I was hard pressed to find three RPG's on PS3 with screenshots and actual info, besides the usual glut of "Working Titles" and sparse info. Not saying that's obviously not going to change but I would not be suprised if the best next gen Japanese RPG's next year were for the 360.

But off the top of my head, I can't really think of any next-gen RPGs that have been announced aside from the ones you listed.
Most of the other 06 RPGs are coming out on the "this-gen" PS2 it seems...
But I'm assuming this will change soon enough.
