I've read 11 on the list (don't have time to list them right now, maybe later), but there are several on there that are on my really want to read some time list.

OK, here's why Goosebumps got on the list. One word: occult. Now, can someone please tell me what's so wrong with Where's Waldo? Had too much trouble finding him?

Apparently in one of the Where's Waldo books there was a lady who was supposedly topless. I don't know if that's been confirmed or rebutted, but that's why its been "banned".

Personally, I think those "I Spy" books should be banned, on account of pure pointlessness.

1. Black Beauty by Anna Sewell (my parents read this to me when I was little)
2. Bridge to Terabithia (read in class in 3rd grade)
3. The Face on the Milk Carton by Caroline Cooney (read back when I was in middle school and into those utterly dumb mystery/horror/thriller novels geared toward kids that age... )
4. Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury (read it because we never were assigned it in school, was confused the entire second half of the book)
5. Fallen Angels by Walter Dean Myers (read in high school for fun)
6. Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes (read in middle school for class)
7. Flowers in the Attic by Virginia C. Andrews (read in 5th grade because I didn't know any better. NEVER NEVER read this book... it warped me for years o_O)
8. Frankenstein by Mary Shelley (read in middle school for fun)
9. Goosebumps (series) by R.L. Stine (read a couple, borrowed from my sister)
10. Hamlet by William Shakespeare (read in high school for class)
11. The Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling (read for fun, haven't been able to read 6 yet)
12. How to Eat Fried Worms by Thomas Rockwell (read half by teacher in class 2nd grade, still don't know the end...)
13. I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou (read in high school for class, we had a big freak-out at our school over this book, some people went to the school board over it even, wasn't banned or anything though)
14. James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl (read in grade school for fun)
15. A Light in the Attic by Shel Silverstein (read for fun)
16. The Lorax by Dr. Seuss (read for fun)
17. Lysistrata by Aristophanes (saw the play since a friend was in it, does that count? lol)
18. Macbeth by William Shakespeare (read in high school for class)
19. The Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare (read in high school for class)
20. My Brother Sam is Dead by James Lincoln Collier and Christopher Collier(read for fun)
21. The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton (read for CAA's defunct bookclub)
22. Scary Stories (Series) by Alvin_Schwartz (read in grade school, the illustrations [why it was banned] disturbed me for years, still do)
23. Where's Waldo? by Martin Hanford (read in grade school)
24. The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Speare (read for optional reading in 5th grade)
25. The Witches by Roald Dahl (read for fun)
26. A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle (read for fun)

Huh, more than I thought. And the strange thing is, a good deal of those I read in grade school and middle school... lol.

I think the reason Chaucer is on the list is because he can be rather
*koff*Earthy*koff*in some of the Canterbury Tales.

I got 26 off the first list... not the ALA one. Add 20 to that if each book in a banned series counts (HP and Goosebumps)

I seem to remember finding that when trying to find Waldo. It didn't make an impression on me at the time and now I couldn't even tell you which book it was in.

I find it ironic that two of the books on the banned list,The Pigman and
Flowers For Alegernon, were required reading when I was in high school.
Actually I think the reason why The Pigman was banned was because of the
fact that the characters swear and drink and smoke.

Bingo, but mainly the swearing. Flowers for Algernon and The Pigman were on the required list when I was in high school.

Flowers for Algernon the novella was excellent. Flowers for Algernon the NOVEL was a bit more sexually oriented. o.o;;

I've read about 20 of the books on the list, mainly for middle school and high school. The Giver by Lois Lowry is my favorite.

What is Where's Waldo?
Here in Australia we have something called the Where's Wally? books. I think they are British. They are classics and very fun. Maybe the two are similar?

Waldo and Wally is exactly the same - just different names in different countries. Here we have both Wally & Waldo (which is confusing).

This is not unprecedented - in South Africa we had Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles for a very long time. For some reasons they change the name for different regions.

Oh, I think they changed the word to "Hero" because somewhere someone complained about the word "ninja" (this is unconfirmed but plausible). Off course they haphazzardly inserted the word "Hero" in the theme song as well (instead of recording the whole thing over) which is rather irritating.

The singing would go something like "Teenage Mutant HERO turtles". "Teenage Mutant HERO turtles". "Teenage Mutant HERO turtles" Oh the horrible memories...

Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles sounds like bad Engrish.

Oh, I think they changed the word to "Hero" because somewhere someone complained about the word "ninja" (this is unconfirmed but plausible).

I can't say I've very surpised. Some people complain about everything...

(Black Beauty by Anna Swell (what can I say, I'm a horse girl)
The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Speare)

(Wow. Granted, there's a few on that list that I'm going to be reading for school this year, but I really thought I'd have more, considering my insane readingness. (I'm the one who scared my dad away from Star Wars books by bringing home big novels) I guess the type of books I read don't really get banned or challenged...)

Most people don't bother to read lengthy novels these days.I mean have you ever sat down to read the average Dickens novel which is over 700 pages in length?
When I was in Bible School it took me around a month or so to read
Our Mutual Friend.

Maybe our mistakes are what make our fate. Without them, what would shape our lives? Perhaps if we never veered off course, we wouldn't fall in love, or have babies, or be who we are. After all, seasons change. So do cities. People come into your life and people go. But it's comforting to know the ones you love are always in your heart. And if you're very lucky, a plane ride away.

1. The Adventures of Hucleberry Finn
2. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer
3. Alice in Wonderland
4. All Quiet on the Western Front
5. Animal Farm
6. Brave New World
7. The Canterbury Tales - Or at least a good part of it, several of the tales are REALLY crude
8. Catch-22
9. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
10. Fahrenheit 451
11. Flowers for Algernon
12. Frankenstein
13. The Giver - Actually, I had the whole book read to me in an English Class, but I think that's close enough
14. The Grapes of Wrath
15. The Gulag Archipelago
16. Hamlet - WHAT? This is one of the classic works of the English language!
17. The Handmaid's Tale
18-23. All the Harry Potter books
24. James and the Giant Peach
25. The Jungle
26. The Lorax
27. Lord of the Flies
28. Macbeth
29. Nineteen Eighty-Four
30. The Ninty-Five Theses of Martin Luther - How Dare They!
31. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
32. The Scarlet Letter
33. To Kill a Mockingbird - Banned for racial slurs? The whole book is against racism!
34. The Turner Diaries - Scary, the book is just evil. It is interesting to see how some people think, but the minds of some are dark, scary places.
35. Where's Waldo
36. The Witches
37. A Wrinkle in Time

I have to say, with the exception of The Turner Diaries and parts of the Cantebury Tales, these are good books (although I didn't exactly enjoy All's Quiet on the Western Front, The Grapes of Wrath, or Frankenstein). I guess some people just try to ban almost anything objectionable, or anything they disagree with. Also, the Scarlet Letter is pretty inaccurate about the Puritans, but a good book none the less.
