problem installing windows xp pro

Postby Mr. Rogers » Tue Dec 13, 2005 6:24 pm

i am having a problem installing windows xp pro. it goes very very slow. it takes like 4-6 hours to finish the installation. it shouldn't take more than 45 minutes. i have a 1.3GHz athlon processor and 512MB of RAM so I know the computer itself isn't that slow. I am doing a clean installation with nothing else on the hard drive. any clues?

Is your CD/DVD drive on the same IDE channel as the HD? If so, you'll wanna move it to the other one. That can make installs go slower.

45 minutes!? I wish... Even on a 2.1 Ghz Processor a 52x CD Rom and 512MB Ram it STILL look over 2 hours.

Best thing I can say is get a book and started reading while its installing.

Edit: Oh, are you formatting the Hard Drive? If you are, that will take a while and add even more time onto it.

the only problem with that method is something gets stuck and it waits for you to wake up before processing another bit...

Hehe... that kind of stuff happens to me...

see if you can drop the disk into another computer and run a full surface scan for bad sectors.

Like I said, get a book. XP does take forever to install and if you're formatting the Hard Drive as well it takes waaaay longer. If you're Hard Drive is blank, I'm presuming you're formatting as well.

Installation may take 45 minutes (though I doubt it), the formatting triples that.

that was my fastest..i dont know why it went so fast, now i have a 3.6ghz and it takes 25-30 mins at most....

Unless you have an older computer, installing Windows XP should never take more than an hour, and if you format with NTFS (quick) format, it only adds like 2 minutes - tops.

I found out what the problem was, though. I reset all my BIOS settings to default. I also noticed that the onboard graphics were set to 32MB when I only have 16MB available. Maybe that was part of it. But anyway, it works now - nice and fast.
