Your Skills

After reading Volt's old thread about starting a game company, it got me thinking: what would I truly be in the game industy?

I'm probably one of millions that just thought "I have ideas, but don't know how to make them", and while I'm still aiming high, I've begun to get back some and think about what I can actually do.

Now, I'll go ahead and say that actually coding stuff is something I don't know... yet. However, this is only because I haven't had access to it. Goodness knows I've been trying to get ahold of it (I'm still waiting for this hopefully helpful design book to come in...).

Now, I'll say that I can get good base concepts, but so can alot of people. I'm not just saying storylines/plots and all, but in the gameplay itself. I've realized that this, obviously, isn't something just one person can do. Putting together several good ideas from different sources is what makes that part of the game.

So then, what can I do? Well, I went back and thought abuot what it was that truly interested:

1) Opposing NPCs, aka, the "enemies" of the game. I love coming up with all the opposing forces of the game, and I wouldn't mind making them happen for real myself. And the other is even moreso:

2) Bosses. Seriously, this is the whole reason I wanted to enter the game industry, for the bosses. I'll admit that many times I judge a game by it's bosses, such as how many, how well they were done, how fun it was to fight them, etc. Bosses are the climactic points of many game genres, and shouldn't be taken lightly.

Now, this doesn't mean I'm giving up on any of my ideas (though I have begun to set more on the "backburner" of my ideas), but these are things I believe could truly be my "place" in the industry (at least to begin with >:D ).

So, how 'bout you?

I am really interested in starting, but as I think about it by skills are:

1) Coming up with the plot.
2) Thinking up tunes in my head.
3) Coming up with characters and bosses
4) Thinking up a battle system.

Problum, I don`t know how to program that stuff. My real talent is writing and i`m pretty good and drawing, but not good enough to ever write a manga. I just can`t figure out how to program this stuff and I figure this age is way too old to get started on this interest. Yes, I know i`m yong but i still fell like it`s too late to know if this is my calling.

My skills...

Well, I've been told by many that I'm quite insane, yet that insanity spawns quite a good amount of creativity. I'd love to do character designs, a little bit of 3-D stuff, but mostly concept art.

And if you don't know already, that's exactly what I'm in college for XD
Cosplays Planned for Anime Vegas and PMX

Inuyasha (Inuyasha) - 0%
Kakashi (Naruto) - 0%
Komui (D.Gray-Man) - 0% (Not for AV/PMX - Starting Early for Anime Los Angeles)

It's never to late to get started on an interest. You might check this site out: http://www.darkbasic.com

My favorite thing is designing maps - the sprawling views, grand architecture, etcetera. When I messed around with amateur gaming engines, the programming and modelling were always the obstacles that prevented me from doing the gorgeous locations I envisioned. Horizons, panoramas, mountains, forests - I love it all.

Oooo. :3

Oh, and just a quick thought: does anyone else hear kinda get ticked out alot of those "game making" programs?

I've tried stuff like RPG Maker (PC), and frankly, it felt kinda... limiting. >_>
It's like I've got alot I want to get out, and this thing is trying to do it for me.

I also have Game Maker 6. It's pretty decent, but you have to register to get its full capabilities...

I'm sure that everyone else here will bash it, but I still stand by 3D Gamestudio as an excellent thing to mess around with. The engine takes care of rendering, etc., and you get to simply build the world LEGO-style and then program all sorts of things with a hybrid C/Javascript language. If you know what you're doing, it's quite powerful and you can do pretty much anything with it. (Unlike many other such things, in which you're basically throwing together premade modules in different combinations.) It's got an active fan base and lots of fan-made code, models, textures, etcetera. It also works with all the most popular model types. I'd check it out if I were you:
