Sonic vs Mario, Tails vs Luigi, and Knuckles vs. Wario... Hmm...

Have a video game or or VG review? This is the place to to discuss it! We also accept discussions of board games and the like, but SHHH! Don't tell anyone, OK?

From Wikipedia (man I love this site):

Mario, also known as Super Mario and originally Jumpman in Japan, is a video game character created by Shigeru Miyamoto for Nintendo.

Mario was named after the Italian landlord, Mario Segali, at Nintendo of America when it was headquartered in New York in the early 1980s (it is now located in Redmond, Washington). After interrupting a conference, he angrily demanded that the rent be paid. The upsetting and furious tone of the man's voice, as well as the unexpectedness of this had an impact on the participants, and it was mentioned that the warehouse manager and Jumpman resembled one another, and by the production of Donkey Kong Junior, an arcade game in the style of Donkey Kong, Jumpman officially became Mario.

I realized this shortly after I logged off (ah, the wonders of the subconscious). However, this works only if you have limited invulnerability after being hit (which characters generally do), and that matter is both up for debate and irrelevant. Also, both characters have some things that always kill them, so the battle would be more about luck than anything else.

Godly Paladin wrote:I'm not seeing that, actually. Sonic has the Lightning Shield, which allows him double jump capabilities, and in Hyper Mode he can jump an insane height.

The problem is that this requires power up items, and to be fair we must include Mario's as well. Thus, both game characters have invulnerability, and the entire conflict becomes pointless.

Also, I argue that Super Sonic (is it Hyper?) is similarly unfair. You need Chaos Emeralds to attain that form, and those are thus a form of powerup. Furthermore, it requires a vast amount of time to gather all of them (several worlds, in the games that I played). Presuming they started the fight with both in a neutral state, the situation would never occur.

Godly Paladin wrote:Sonic's been in pinball games, versus fighters, board games, etcetera. Granted, most of those are somewhat obscure, but he's had his share of non-platforming titles.

Still, consider all the games Mario has named after him, much less played a role in. The only one of the above I'm not sure about is pinball (though it has probably existed). In the other categories, Mario has multiple games.

Godly Paladin wrote:Come, now. Be reasonable. Sonic has trashed so many huge bosses with emerald-generated powers and big guns that it's just ridiculous to claim 'extraordinary cosmic destructive powers' for Mario.

I don't follow your logic. Sonic has beaten bosses so therefore Mario can't have? Have you played any of the non-platformer Mario games? I stand by my statement that some of the Mario bosses have had "random adjective powers". In any case, almost all of the platforming Mario bosses have been invincible to all Mario's attacks.

Let's just let the matter rest, then. (Because I still think Sonic would win anyway.)

That is for the best. Our debate is unlikely to cure cancer or feed hungry children.

(And I'll still retain Devil's Advocate styled cynicism.)

Yeah, but remember - he's supposed to be a mature and responsible mod. So therefore he doesn't get to smite willy-nilly. I think.

However, I do get to redirect threads to their original topics. Such as this one. Please do not post further unless you wish to engage in pointless argument of the variety that Godly Paladin and I modeled for you. Carry on.
