Win XP problem

I have Windows XP Professional Version 5.1 and I want to install a classic game from the olden days. But I keep getting this irritating error message!!! How do I go around this problem without downgrading back to Windows 98?

And no clever "GET LINUX" phrases, please. I doubt it would help anyway.

Attached is a pic that has the error.

Funny thing is... I don't have such a file on PC. I did a search and couldn't find it. Odd.

Any help would be appreciated. :waah!:

If you don't have the file, then you probably need to have it before it'll work. If CAA private messages support attachments, I'll try to send you a copy of it from my end that way.

(If not, it's just a text file -- I'll copy and paste it in between some CODE tags so you can then copy and paste it on your end into a text file. ^_^ )

You have Win XP... there's ur problem, lol.

Now seriously:

Most old games won't work on Windows XP. That's why XP has a built in OS Emulator.

Right click on the main .exe (not a shortcut) and Go to Properties
In the Compatibility Tab, click the box for "Run this program in compatibility mode for..." and pick the Operating System it's for in the drop down box.

That may let it work now.

I didn't find that "compatability" tab - mine doesn't seem to have it. I've looked for it but couldn't find it, but MelodyMaker helped me out with some code and the problem is now sorted out. Hopefully I'd be able to install all the other old files as well. Thanks, Skynes though for offering to help, though!

Keep in mind most of the DOS games are not going to perform well... even the hardware is drastically different.

<Looks sadly at old copy of Princess Maker 2 that plays slowly and with no sound on XP... and doesn't work on Dosbox either>

it pretty mach means that your version of XP does not support the game your trying to install, what service pack are you using? once you update to service pack 2 you lose more compatibility with older games. Either that or teh file needed is in an optional part of windows and isn't installed.

If you cant get the other files to work, you could try installing dos box. It is a MS-DOS emulator for XP. Just google it.
