Sonic vs Mario, Tails vs Luigi, and Knuckles vs. Wario... Hmm...

Have a video game or or VG review? This is the place to to discuss it! We also accept discussions of board games and the like, but SHHH! Don't tell anyone, OK?

Put down who you think is better in each of the matchups. I'm a die hard Sonic/Sega gamer, so the blue hog and company sweeps the board. What about you guys?

Hmm...I don't know. I like the Sega mascots better than Nintendo's, but as far as games?

The Mario games have always been right up there in terms of fun. Mario has even ventured into the RPG realm with the help of Squaresoft! I don't believe there's ever been a Sonic RPG. But Mario Sunshine was not as good as I had hoped.

Sonic games have also been a lot of fun...especially Sonic CD! However, the quality of the recent Sonic games have been lacking...I didn't like the Sonic Advance games, and Sonic Heroes wasn't that great. I did like the Sonic Adventure games, but I don't like the ultra-hard challenges that were required to get the neat bonus stuff (like Green Hill Zone, I had to get that by cheating).

I HATE it when games rank you (A-F or whatever) and the "A" or God forbid "S" ranks are required to get the kewl stuff. When will game designers learn the point of a game is to have FUN?! I don't like it when I'm required to run through the level as fast as I can just to get a stupid rank. I like to explore. I'm not against ranking, mind you, but I don't like being required to get high ranks. It should be merely for bragging rights.

Whew! *Gets off soapbox*

In conclusion, though I like the mascots better for Sega, I have to give the edge to Mario's games. They don't require you to do difficult stunts to get the neat bonus things. It's always been a nice mix of challenge and fun as opposed to Sega.

^_^; I really like the Mario games, but I find furries more amusing than Italian plumbers. And I've been a hardcore Knuckles fangirl since I was 5. So my vote goes 100% to Sega.

Hmm....

I don't know a whole lot about Sonic and co. (but I have played a few Sonic games). The characters of the Sonic the Hedgehog series are cool (Tails is my favorite). But I think I will have to vote for the Nintendo Corporation (that's the wrestling name for Mario etc. when I play WWE  ).

*ahem* Anyway, that's my decision not because I'm more of a Mario fan but because I feel that Mario, Luigi, and Wario have more abilities than Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles. Yes, Sonic etc. are way cooler in some people's opinion but Mario etc. got the moves

Well, that's my take on it anyway.

To the Sonic fans out there: Which do you like better, the classic Sonic games (think Genesis), the Next-Gen (Dreamcast, GC), or the Hand-Helds? (GameGear, GBA, etc.)

The classics are just that - the classics. But Sonic Adventure really revived the fan in me. Right now my favorite is Sonic Adventure 2, but that could change.

Sonic runs, Mario walks. Sonic destroys enemies with his spikes, Mario kills enemies by jumping on them or squashing them with his butt. Sonic can become Super Sonic, wielding extraordinary cosmic destructive powers. Mario? He can become Fire Mario and shoot fire balls.

Which one of these do you really think is cooler?

Sonic and Tails and I don't know much about either Knuckles or Wario!!
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone
And so hold on when there is nothing left in you
Except the Will which says to them: 'Hold on!' ...you'll be a Man, my son!

Azier the Swordsman... you really dissed Mario.
Myself, I like both of the franchises (even though I'm annoyed at how some of the Sonic characters act esspecially in the new games). Sonic runs around really fast and Mario has great platforming I'm torn.

But when it comes down to the match ups:
Sonic vs. Mario -- umm... That's interesting but Sonic would probably win that one.
Luigi vs. Tails -- Luigi, sorry I just find tails annoying.
Knuckles vs. Wario -- Knuckles punches Wario's girth which absorbs the blow. Wario wins because Knuckles would fail to hurt him at all.

That's my view. :)

The very first game I ever played was Mario Bros. on the NES... I was four or five then, and I still remember that day pretty clearly. It's the game that first pops into my mind when I hear the word "gaming". To me, it's still the plat former game.... it's not overwhelming and very simple to pick up and play, yet a challenge to beat.

Sure, the Sonic games are cool, fun, and fast-paced with an attitude...... but I don't find it as creative and charming as the Mario games. I mean, look at the very first game... you're a plumber stuck in a middle ages like era fighting various types of turtles and walking mushroom things called "Goombas"(by choice of jumping on their head or throwing fire ball at them) while, breaking bricks with your head in search for stars, mushrooms, coins, or fire flowers. Now that's unique.

Yes, Mario gets my vote. Luigi wins my vote. And Wario wins my vote... don't get me started on the random oddness and weirdness that is Wario Ware.

…..and, folks, after just beating Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door for the 'cube last night... Mario's still got it.

Well, in contrast to Mr. Antilles, my first console game ever was Sonic the Hedgehog, so I've always liked him a whole lot more than Mario.

Sonic and co. sweeps the board, IMO. Plus, Tails will always be the coolest Sonic character ever.

Mario vs. Sonic: I chose Sonic... sorta. I flipping hate the Sonic games and love the old-skool Mario games (I'll play you on zsnes netplay if you PM me), but Sonic just seems like a deeper character to me... maybe that's cause I RP in the sonicverse.

Luigi vs. Tails: Tails. Just cause I love the little blue-eyed, two-tailed fox.

Wario vs. Knux: I hate both. They suck. Die. Flip a coin and insert the answer you want to see here.

I take Mario over Sonic. Somehow, he would win this...using crazy weird old school Nintendo power. Perhaps with Bowser interfering and helping his fat Italian win. I think Luigi would beat down Tails...since Tails was always useless. But in the final battle, I see Knuckles putting a vicious beatdown on Wario...since Wario is lame...and not old school at all. And Knuckles is awesome. I would pick Knuckles out of everyone....just cause.

The first videogame i ever owned is Super Mario Bros. on the NES.....

But, I don`t care, Sonic is way cooler!

I was a major Sonic fanboy back in the day of sidescrollers.

Most people here seem to be choosing those they like better... which is just as well, because comparing video game characters is ridiculous. I shall now begin, though I have no intention of being thorough, because I have better things to do.

Note that Mario has one advantage over Sonic: more life. Sonic dies in two hits, whereas Mario takes three (and, in games like Yoshi's island, four). Of course, different games have different rules, but taking all the games as a whole Mario also wins, in that he has RPGs. Also on defensive ability, consider that the Mario of Paper Mario has the ability to Super Dodge: completely stop an enemy's attack and also deal damage to them.

In the realm of movement, Sonic is obviously faster than Mario (though he's far from slow in the original games). However, Mario has the jumping advantage, and also long range attacks, of which Sonic has none. Also, Mario probably has a great range of movement, given the massive variety of games he has been in.

If we're considering this as a real "fight" (which is ridiculous) consider also that skill plays a greater role than power. Mario definitely has more games and a wider variety of skills. He's defeated numerous opponents other than his archnemesis, including some that had extraordinary cosmic destructive powers (Smithy or the boss of Paper Mario 2).

I think that Luigi would easily beat Tails, simply because Luigi is in essence a green Mario, whereas Tails does very little in each game. Knuckles versus Wario... I'll go with Shatterheart on this one.

I'm especially annoyed when the rankings are based on apparently arbitrary standards.

Actually, Sonic has infinite life. I've squeaked through many a long boss battle just by being hit, grabbing the rings that spew forth, and going at it again. You can last forever on a single ring using this method.

However, Mario has the jumping advantage

I'm not seeing that, actually. Sonic has the Lightning Shield, which allows him double jump capabilities, and in Hyper Mode he can jump an insane height.

Mario probably has a great range of movement, given the massive variety of games he has been in.

Sonic's been in pinball games, versus fighters, board games, etcetera. Granted, most of those are somewhat obscure, but he's had his share of non-platforming titles.

Mario definitely has more games

Sonic has 41. I don't know how many Mario has...

He's defeated numerous opponents other than his archnemesis, including some that had extraordinary cosmic destructive powers

Come, now. Be reasonable. Sonic has trashed so many huge bosses with emerald-generated powers and big guns that it's just ridiculous to claim 'extraordinary cosmic destructive powers' for Mario.

At any rate, there's my defense. Don't really know why I'm doing it, since it all comes down to a matter of opinion. I suppose it's just because people often say Mario would beat Sonic in a versus fight, but people always forget the numerous tricks Sonic has up his sleeve: chaos emeralds, a variety of shields, invincibility, etcetera.

Well, that depends on what you define as "having a game." For example, Mario was the star of the NES game "Golf." Would you classify that as a Mario game? If you want to count mere cameo appearances as a game for the character, Mario has hundreds.

I don't think cameos should count, although if they don't then that means that you'll probably have to dock a few from Sonic's number. I was simply trying to point out that both characters have had an insane number of games.
