Without escapsm...

Talk about anything in here.

Even John Stuart Mill, one of the 19th century's most prominent Utilitarians had suffered a nervous breakdown in his 20s and he blamed his education (which removed all poetry and arts from his education) for that - he later found consolation in the poetry of Wordsworth (that should please Scribs ).

Actually the man in my avatar is only his lesser known cousin, Christopher. Noone remembers poor christopher any more... I think I will try to escape from this fact, but bumping the bump thread.

"Well, despite the fact that too much tv destroys imagination"

"I hope you're being sarcastic... This is just not true. The idea that comic books, TV, and video games destroy your imagination... That is truly an archaic paranoia that should have died out once two entire generations had grown up with TV (before that there were enough who didn't watch TV to count against that), and probably 3 generations in Japan had grown up with comic books..."

Yeah, stuff like that, especially videogames, feeds my imagination.

We will always have "escapism" as long as we have imaginations and free will. Without those, there would be no "escapism", and we would be no different than animals. God did not want us to be like animals, he created us in His image, so we will never have to worry about that. Our soul is our consciousness, free will, and imagination.

Edit:
"Mill must have been an A type of personality."

What does that mean?

Just curious, are anime "crushes" considered escapism or just being crazy?

Without Escapism I Would Be Crazy-er Than I Already Am, I'd Be Jumping Off Cliffs And Tearing Myself Apart Because Of Frustation, I'd Be Screaming For No Reason And Then I'd Just Lie Down Down On The Floor And Veggitate Until I Just I Lose My Mind And My Life With It!

It depends on who you ask and to what degree. My general response to such people is raised eyebrows, but I can't claim to be disinterested.

While TV and video games do not destroy one's imagination, I would say that reading involves one's imagination more than the other two. Because the first two are audio-visual, there is one standard way of viewing it. While reading, one must conceptualize scenes according to the information given and everyone does not see these scenes in the same way (some even disregard the description and make up their own). Perhaps this is why people always say the book was better: they nuance their mental picture of a story according to their preferences.

Without imagination, I would be a rather melancholy human being.

Well, what I am talking about is not in the context of an obsessive fixation. It's whatever goes into a "crush," such as safely admiring from a distance. Things like devoting yourself to writing fan-fiction or fanart of the character, for example.

Those happen. They don't concern me in others, so unless it is worsening your life I wouldn't recommend worrying about it.

I definitely agree with you on this point (though at times the book really is better).
