Can anime characters be hot?

Talk about anything in here.

Hey, give her a break... I mean no one would look wonderful if they were chased around by half- zombified, chainsaw wielding, village people.

About the attraction of an anime character, unless it becomes immorally physical (I need not say more), most of it is purely emotional and mental. Much like BTD said, many see these characters as representation of what they want in a mate.

It is mentally ill to think of these characters as the mate. I think we are all in agreement of this, so please don't debate it. Does it really matter that we argue about a "if a tree falls in a forest" type question?

That is now the offfical battle cry of the Fan Girl (tm).
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.

Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.

But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. For more information concerning how you can help and how you can get an incredible video about this horrific reality, visit the Invisible Children home page.

Interesting chain, this one. I think we all would agree that anime is strictly fictional so being attracted to a character to the point of fanatacism is unhealthy. However I dont think there is a problem with finding attractive characteristics in fictional characters. When you enjoy any form of entertainment (anime, movies, books, video games, etc...) you become mentally engaged in the story. Engaged as we are, we tend to look for similar characteristics in the stories' characters as we do in real life. Its just easier to find such characteristics in fiction because they are more apparent (they are designed that way). By the same token, that only makes such characteristics that much more precious when we take the time and effort to find those characteristics in our search for our future mates (God willing).

That being said, Winry Rockbell (Full Metal Alchemist) and Kagome (Inuyasha) are "attractive" to me. Not only are they pretty, but they both display a self-sacrificing loyalty to the ones that they care about.

The thing I find sad is that so many people nowadays have bought into the "happily ever after" myth that if they aren't happy they feel they can casually walk away from marriages. My prayer is that God will help me (us)learn true loyalty to our spouses, even to the sacrifice of our own desires.

Sorry if that sounded preachy or anything, just something I feel really strongly about.

io think finding an anime character attractive is more than just ... oh he has muscles drawn on them.... it is the character that is behind the anime character.

Yeah. She stayed up all night under a lot of stress fighting monsters and
watching her dad die.
I think she can be forgiven for having a distant look in her eyes (and bags and rings and such)

She's still hot, though.

And she wasn't chased by chainsaw weilding half zombified villagers, that would be Resident Evil 4. She was chased by apes with no faces and misshapen creatures... With bright red weird thingies to save all her features. But I digress...

Hmm, well that is different. Most people I know use "Hot" when talking about a person's physical characteristics-- not personality, so that is what I thought you were talking about before. Sorry for that misunderstanding.

I'm burning out on anime so I'll have a tendency to be cynical on personality any more. I find it harder to relate to the characters in the series anymore... so I'm afraid I still can't find anyway to answer the question differently than I had before... though I hope I did better in avoiding sounding accusatory than I did before.

The more I think about it, perhaps this thread is a thinly veiled attempt by Natsumi to have us tell her that her new avatar is HOT. I mean, she even went so far as to edit it from it's original, somewhat more revealing, version.

No Kagome is not hot.

Kenshin is though. For me, it's the character too...if Kenshin was real, he would be kinda weird lookin', though. O_o

Given the references to personality etc, perhaps something like "appealing" or "likeable" might be more encompassing. Where I came from, "hot" always had lustful connotations.

I actually don't apply the term "hot" as much as I do the words "cute" to describe a character I like. Seemingly, I can understand when one hears the word hot or sexy, they assume a "Lara Croft"-like infatuation (where only the physical characteristics apply to the attraction). Perhaps poor choice of words?

Though my anime crushes always involve a more emotional meaning than the physical.

Ah... Silent Hill girl... well, I'm not a big horror fan, so can you forgive me?

Well, anime and manga is still made by money. Unless you are doing it for artistic reasons, most mangaka will make disproportionate female figures and male behavior (a real guy would never compete with a bishie unfortunately) for the tantalizing sound of falling coins.
