Is Ogata Megumi a Christian?

Postby Jeikobu » Fri Nov 04, 2005 5:03 pm

This has been a question on my mind today. With a very depressingly few number of believers in Japan, I always am interested in knowing who actually does believe. This song and this song have very Christian sounding lyrics but are only performed by Ogata Megumi (Megumi Ogata in American name order), not written by. This song is both written and performed by her, but it doesn't have a translation. Also, it's hard to know when things are sincere or whether they're just for show (alot of Christian stuff seems to surface in Japan and used just for decoration or to look cool, but has nothing at all to do with following and believing in God). I managed to find Ogata's official website, and I viewed the site in English and even found what's supposed to be her email, but I don't know if she speaks English or not, and besides I noticed something on one of the pages saying "Sorry, we make it a rule not to answer email" or something. I also searched Google for info with no luck. So I guess my question simply is, does anyone know if she is Christian or not?

I would guess she is not.

The English songs had Christian meaning (O Happy day was a hymn at a Church I once attended, and the other I remember from top 40, years ago). I wish the other song had the kana/kanji to get a better feel for the meaning.

She seems to have chosen songs with Christian meaning, but the question is what purpose she chose them. Perhaps for being a Christian, perhaps not.

Sailor Moon's creator Naoko Takeuchi was once rumored to be a Christian for all the Christian symbolism in Sailor Moon (removed from the dub), but it seems like this rumor was not true.

Christians are roughly 1% of the population.

With the fact that she used Sailor Moon as the savior/messaiah, I... wouldn't think so :/

But that's like saying that ABe is Christian because of Haibane, which in an interview he said it was "a non-denominational theme of salvation".

Exactly. The Japanese like to borow our imagery, but they don't use it as we would. Mamoru Oshii did this too.

To them, it's probably an interesting religion.

It's a mysterious religion, much as Hollywood borrows from Eastern religion, the Japanese borrow from Christian and Jewish beliefs and symbols.

Unless she has made a public statement one way or the other any reference to
her being a Christian should be taken with a grain of salt. This is of course true
of any celebrity wheter here or in Japan or elsewhere.Unless they themsleves
come out with some sort of public declaration regarding their faith we cannot
be certain of what they believe.
Remember Religion does tend to be quite personal so many celebrities will
shy away from actually stating what they believe and this is why you have so
many rumors that end up floating around.

Megumi Ogata is my favorite voice actor ^_^. It would be really cool if she was a Christian. I think I might have insight on possible motives for her choosing the first two songs. I also searched around the internet for info on Megumi and I found one website that had a review for "Stop and Go" the CD that those two christian songs. Apparently it was released in response to the War in Iraq.

You can't judge a book by it's cover.
The eyes are the window to the soul, so by looking at them you can tell if she has the light of Jesus or the lostness or darkness of Satan. It all depends. You never know until you ask God for an answer and put your beliefs aside. Only God can see if a person is demonic or if he/she is actually very religious. You never know until you ask for God's answer.
So therefore I cannot cast a vote.

Nobody's judging her. We're discussing the probability of a Japanese performer being a Christian based on the facts of
1) She has some Christian themed songs
2) She comes from a country that is 99% non Christian.

She either is or isn't. We're just curious which is true.
